obc great job, really appreciate the insight, especially for those that are too far to go see them up close! Sounds like the recruiting class of "16 may be making an impact. Heard Roth may be done with football after the surgery?

I don't have a clue why people on this board are talking about Fleck. I've been in the same room with him and heard him talk his pitch. He's a motivational speaker. His high tempo practices fit in perfectly with the brand he's selling. However, I don't know how his brand is going to weather the competition of the Big 10 in the long run. There has to be substance to sustain. That substance, imho, is caring about the players. I have every reason to believe the coaching staff at USD has that substance because I truly think they care about their players. With Fleck, I talked to a 2017 DE recruit's mom this last year and she told me her son was invited over to Western and they told him they intended to offer but only if he committed on the spot. His HS coach also told him he thought that was the best offer he was going to get. Talk about pressure and what's good for who??? This definitely wasn't what was best for the recruit. Smoke and mirrors only last so long. But I think Fleck will always be driving the best of the new Corvettes! Sorry, I feel I need to comment about PJ. When my son went on a Junior day, he got an offer with the same ultimatum, either take it or lose it if you walk out the door. When I challenged that we had yet to see any part of the University other than the football facility and Academics are an important part of the decision, he did not care. When we returned in the summer for camp, he gave the same stories and pitch and I noticed then that he fails to make eye contact with anyone, as I sat in front of him and he did not notice me until I asked a question. He comes off as insincere and a narcissist when you get to know him. There were lots of billboards in Kalamazoo with his picture on it and not pictures of his players. He is high energy and his first speech can inspire, but the true depth of the man is very shallow. My experience with Coach Nielson and his staff was very different. Very sincere and caring. Education is a part of the equation, but there is still that high energy and drive to succeed. I know it is Big Ten, but I think the USD staff can win the recruiting battle regardless.

Roster updated on the website. www.goyotes.com/roster.aspx?path=footballAs previously mentioned, Strong, Hill, Khilgore gone. At first glance, don't see Byrd or Kemar Downer. Numbers 73 & 35 have been given to others. I remember seeing Downer (dreads) play a lot of CB against SDSU, but never saw him following week and it seemed weird to me as I didn't remember him getting hurt. His Twitter says he got good grades and he has retweeted some stuff from the team acct recently, but his bio doesn't say anything about USD. Looking at the Spring Roster and the Fall Roster here are the changes minus the graduated Seniors: No Longer on the team: Khorey Kilgore (RB), Calvin Strong (RB), Kemar Downer (DB), Emmitt Knight (RB), Romontry Hill (LB), Nathan Byrd (OL), Gunner Fuleberth (DB) Additions: Justin Heinrichs (DB, So.), Nate Gunn (LB, Jr. From 2015 Roster), PJ Friedel (WR, R-Fr.), Noah Roberts (WR, Jr. From 2014 Roster), Joe Kordus (LB Fr. New Recruit from Prep School, 2016 Grad), Max Frank (DL, R-Fr. Transfer from Wyoming?), and Cody Jennings (OL, Jr. Junior College Transfer). Position Changes: Brian Woodward (DB to LB), Darin Greenfield (LB to DL), Ben Klett (LB to RB) No real surpises as roster always change and players decide to either drop, transfer, or play. Postion changes are always inevitable as the needs of the team often dictate. I would expect to see a few more changes before next fall.

Do we know anything about Cody Jennings? JUCO works a little different for a mid-year transfer than regular signing day. They are able to sign mid-December (not sure the actual date). He's already included on the roster on USD's website (unable to do a screen shot but you can look it up if you'd like).
From the Football Website: Enrolled in January and will have two years of eligibility remaining to compete for the Coyotes ... helped lead Garden City to its first national title and an undefeated season (11-0) in 2016 ... started 22 consecutive games on the line in two seasons for the Busters ... played both tackle positions and right guard ... was an all-conference honoree during championship season ... earned his associates degree from GCCC this past year ... attended Southwestern Heights High School in Kansas where he played for coach Matt Scripsick ... was a four-year letter winner who earned all-state honors as a senior ... was a two-time all-conference performer ... led defensive ends in Kansas with 104 tackles as a senior ... was also an all-conference basketball player for the Mustangs ... earned a citizenship award as a senior at Southwestern Heights ... interested in studying business

Just saw this on FootballScoop.com:
Buffalo: Sources tell FootballScoop that Luke Groth, the director of football operations and on-campus recruiting at South Dakota, has accepted the role of assistant athletic director for football operations on Lance Leipold’s staff at Buffalo. More details on DFO Scoop.
Coach Groth seems like a good guy and looks like he is moving on to a new opportunity! Good for him!

Wanted to chime in on this thread. I saw most of the SIU game on ESPN3, very little of the SDSU game thanks to ESPN3, and saw the NDSU game live. All tough losses but each had some glimpses of our future along with our glaring areas for improvement.
Here is my grade on the season and outlook going into next year. First my prediction of a 6-4 season may have been a little rosey, but a few bounces our direction and we could have been there. I would grade the season as a solid C, not great, but lots to work with to get better.
Going forward you need to look no further to the current commits to see where this staff wants to make changes, 10 of the 19 are either O-line or D-line. On offence, we return most of the team, but I can see some good competition for the o-line spots. I don't think anyone of those boys should consider their spot secure. While our pass blocking was good our run blocking was less than good. With all of the receivers coming back, this is the strength of the offence. At QB Streveler is a big positive and the competition between Simmons, Tsagalis and Parks for 2,3, & 4 should be fun to sort out. My two biggest concerns going into next year are RB and TE. Although Fredrick improved throughout the year he does not strike fear in anyone as an offensive threat. He is a nice change of pace back but we need a true #1. Between the 5 true freshman this year and our one recruit for next year, I hope we can find a better option. If not hopefully there is another recruit or transfer the coaching staff is targeting. At TE, I would like to see someone who could be an offensive threat and not just a 6th lineman. We lose Potter who was nothing more than adequate and still have Ramsey but we need to find someone else either in our system or as a recruit. True freshman Herrmann looks to have good size and the recruits Kneifl and Jensen look good? Don't be surprised to see an influx of youth on the offence next year especially at O-line, RB, & TE.
Defensively, Every job should be up for grabs! Like Coach Neilson said we have to get stronger! The D-line is wide open, with the graduation of a few seniors I expect to see same major changes here. I would not be surprised to see Kam Cline moved to the interior. A lot of schools like to see DE recruits with the body to add size move to the interior to improve the overall athleticism of the D-Line. I think we will see some of this year's freshman class make in impact here along with a possible 2017 recruit? At LB, the coaches showed their cards by moving DBs to LBs to get more athletic, but their lack of size definitely hurt. It is nice that Wessel will be back and that we have a core of returning LBs, (Gray, Coker, & Litrenta) but I would expect to see a push from a few freshman (Matthew, Klett, Aune, & Thiele) as they have been getting stronger and were a part of the recruiting last year to upgrade the LB position. In the defensive backfield, I like the changes that were made this year at the corner positions. We have good depth here and this should be the strength of the D for next year. At Safety we have Andrew Gray returning and not much else. We will need a freshman (Reed or Powell) or another DB to step up and help here.
Like any year, the work to make next year better started at the end of the last game. I am sure there is lots of work to be done in the weightroom and film room prior to spring practices. Before that, this coaching staff, who have already done a tremendous job of recruiting, needs to finish finding the pieces for the 2017 class. As we improve, hopefully being redshirted as a freshman is the standard as this gives these players time to develop and get ready for the rigor of college football in the MVFC compared to their respective high school conferences. Looking forward to the next few years! Hopefully there are still a few more good recruits to find under our Christmas trees!
GO YOTES!

yoteforever: Great information and I believe you are correct, this coaching staff is doing a great job with what was in the cupboard when they arrived. Look at WIU, this is the team this staff built with a few years of recruits. If anyone has visited WIU, you know their facilities are poor at best, I have seen better weight rooms in high schools. Their school along with the rest of the Illinois schools are in a very poor financial situation and they do not have as much support you see at USD. Not a great draw for recruits, but they helped develop one of the top teams in the top FCS conference. Extrapolate that to what they are doing here, they have great facilities, including a terrific weight room and training facilities, a dome, hopefully new locker rooms and coaches offices soon, Coyote Village for the athletes to live, and a university in a much better financial situation. This school recruits itself, so imagine what this team will look like in a few years? With some young players already contributing along with a few transfers, this staff has us competing in every game minus the New Mexico game. Rome was not built over night and neither will this team. They will go through some growing pains, including tough losses like the one to WIU, but they continue to improve. Since joining the MVFC, this team has gone 6-26 from 2012 -2015. With another win they will have their most victories in a single season in conference. Pump the brakes, sit back and enjoy the ride! Go Yotes!

One poll out this morning ranks us #20. www.compughterratings.com/FCS/rankingsNow the challenge is to live up to that ranking this weekend and take advantage of an ISU team that is down. Good chance we play as the favorite this week as well. Only saw the first half of last weeks game, but the result is all that mattered. Go Yotes!

Important to find a win on the road to help everyone buy in with the coaching staff and the direction they are headed.

Anyone know if we had any recruits at the D Day game? It would have been a great game for them to see! Talked to both Lincoln Gibbs (RB) and Jakob Parks (QB from Clearwater, FL), both seemed really excited! There were a few others down on the field prior to the game as well.
