Always fun to get such a good win! It was nice to see the offense not give away points! I was very impressed by the O-Line who did a terrific job opening running lanes and giving Streveler time in pass protection. Streveler and Bouma make a great 1-2 punch running the ball, but I have yet to see a second RB that has been effective when Bouma needs a break, Fredrick has yet to show much. Defensively, that was our best game to date. The move of Graham to outside LB really seems to be paying off as Gray has proven to be a good replacement at safety and Moreland has done surprisingly well at the "Mike LB" considering he does not fit the typical profile for the position. The coaching staff is doing a great job of putting our best athletes on the field to keep us fast and aggressive. I will be honest and say that I thought the huge O-Line of UNI (over 300lb avg) would wear us down and they might be able to control the clock with the ground game in the second half of the game. Thankfully, our D-Line really stepped up and played well to the final whistle, also a "shout out" to the UNI coach who went away from a ball control, pound and ground game plan and instead tried to pass (21 passing attempts) when he should have stayed with the run. This weekend's game with Indiana St. is important and will go a long way in determining how the rest of the season might look. Go Yotes!

By my count, we had 9 freshmen, or redshirt freshmen, in the "2 deep" listing for the YSU game. I won't bother to look up the rest of the conference teams but seriously doubt any of the top teams would compare in that statistical category. Not an excuse, just a fact. Great point, there were definitely some personnel changes this past week. This may have been for many reasons including injuries or changes to best match the opponent. I noticed that Graham played significant time at LB and the Gray brothers saw more time at both LB and Safety. On offence the freshman WRs saw more time and the Redshirt freshman Bianchi started at right tackle versus one of the better DE will will see all year. Definitely not time to throw in the towel, but I would expect to see more changes as the season goes along. Fact is that other than the true freshman, these are not athletes that were recruited by this staff or for their style of offence and defense. I am pretty sure the coaching staff has gone through a process of "re-recruiting" all the players on the roster to determine where they fit best for their O and D schemes, which is why we are seeing players switch positions last spring and even this fall. Do not be surprised if we don't see continued changes as they feel younger players who fit their schemes are ready to contribute. This also tells you why Strevler is at QB and will not be changing anytime soon. I understand any long time Yote fans continued frustrations. As a long suffering Die Hard Cubs fan, I fell your pain, but given time this might just be the change that leads to long term success (see the 2015 and 16 Cubs as the example) Judgement on this staff will need to come in 2 or 3 years. What I can say is they are recruiting to make that change. with over 100 offers out so far and a quick look at who they are offering, you can see some significant emphasis being put on O-line and D-line (around 40% of the offers are to these positions) and Defensive Backs (about 25%). Even with all of the changes, we continue to see improvement, now cut down on the turnovers and we might pull off a few upsets and get ourselves back into contention. I am looking forward to the UNI game and Dakota Days! Go Yotes!

I agree with everyone who says pump the brakes. It is going to take some time to get the consistency we all want to see from this team. The good news is, even though they lost, they still played hard to the end and gave themselves a chance to win. The conference schedule is brutal, but with some of the better teams coming to the dome, hopefully we can use the home crowd and pull off some upsets. As far as what I saw, good adjustments early by the coaching staff, I was worried after the first few series, but we stuck with the plan and started finding our offence. The o-line has its issues, but they seem to be improving, the loss of Kennedy in the second half was huge. As much of a fan of Streveler that I have been since he transferred, I also recognize that his arm strength is average at best. Please stop throwing the most difficult pass in football that requires a strong arm, the 10 yard out!! He continues to get picked on that play and we need to recognize this is not in his wheelhouse. We also all learned the negative of the fast pace offense and that is, slowing it down to control the clock. Just something we will need to live with. Defensively, we looked good at times, but we are clearly a few athletes short of where we want to be. Greenfield looks to be a huge addition back from injury, added speed off the edge. I also liked Rambo, Gray and Judge in the D Backfield. Any word on Wessel, as he left early holding his arm?? Good time for a bye week. Go Yotes!

Here are my takeaways after last nights game for what they are worth? Overall grade C. There were a lot of positives, but also many glaring issues that other teams will see and exploit that need to get fixed. The new coaching staff now has the challenge of addressing these issues as they prepare for an FCS schedule. Additionally, there is the fact that this was an FBS team and they run a triple option, which we will most likely not face regularly, so things may look dramatically better next week. Offence: 1. QB: Sorry, but I mentioned in a previous post that Streveler would more than likely be the #1, and I think this game only cements that. The hard fact in college football is when there is a coaching change some very good players (including Seniors) lose their jobs. In this case, Streveler has more of the attributes this coaching staff is looking for in a QB than Seager, and he was brought here to get every chance to be the starter for the next 2 years. To bad for Seager, just glad he has a good attitude. (If you did not notice, When Seager entered the game, the NM Linebackers adjusted their drops because the threat of the run had decreased and may have resulted in the int he threw?). Good news is we should continue to see more of the athleticism for Streveler and he is a problem for defensive coordinators to plan for. 2. RB: Tyler Bouma played well, ran strong and did a tremendous job blocking! Should grade out well. The other RBs showed very little, time will tell but need more depth there. 3. Receivers: Liked what I saw, lots of potential, lots of new faces including true Freshman, hopefully we will see growth here. 4. O-Line: Struggled at times, but did a nice job versus an experience d-line. Pass pro needs to improve if we want to be able to throw downfield consistenlty. If we continue to struggle in pass pro, then look forward to a short passing game all year as they try to throw over linebackers who are protecting against the run for Streveler and Bauma. Defense: 1. D-Line: For an area of concern with their lack of depth and experience, I saw some positives. #16 Loehr played with great energy and was often seen pursuing plays until the very end. The others did well to establish the line of scrimmage. The true freshman Kam Cline looks like the real deal and could be a lot of fun to watch in the future. 2. Linebackers: This group struggled in my opinion. Obviously missing their MLB and signal caller, Wessel, was a big problem, especially against an option team. The 2 outside linebackers are converted DBs, which should give you an insight to the athleticism this coaching staff would like from that position. Both are athletic, but both lack the experience and maybe the strength to attack and shed blockers. It was clear they are not used to moving down hill and establishing the point of attack to disrupt the play. They may be much better suited to defend against spread passing teams that we will see more often during the season, time will tell. Moreland has a high motor and is willing to get in on plays and should improve as the season move along, he did lead the team in tackles for the record. Definitely an area for the coaching staff to work on. 3. DBs: Wow, can we see our cornerbacks do more spin moves while trying to defend a receiver? In my opinion this is the area where the coaches may need to address sooner rather than later. We may see some changes there next week. The corners were not good both against the run or the pass. I was disappointed that I did not hear more from the two returning safeties? This was pointed out as the strength of the defense and I would have liked to see them shine a little more. Once again, statistically, Warner played well and did make some good tackles. Jury is still out on them, they deserve the benefit of the doubt. Special Teams: I agree with the others who have posted, why is a QB returning punts? ?? Kicking game looked good, but the return game needs work. Coverage teams did good. I may sound like a negative nanny, but I am just an old coach who watches game with a critical eye for improvement. That being said, overall, there should be lots of optimism with this team and the new coaching staff. It is becoming clear the type and caliber of athlete this staff is looking to put on the field. This years and next years recruiting classes will eventually help set the future for this program, but until then, the staff has to make do with what they inherited along with a few key transfers and create a competitive team that will set the direction for the future. I am optimistic that this years team can find some success and start to build the future for long term success! Go Yotes and looking forward to next week!

I'm really encouraged by the game. Let's not forget, in an FBS game against a team who went bowling, the priorities are: 1. The check clears 2. No one gets hurt 3. See how the players perform against better talent Seemed like #2 & 3 were very successful. I just hope the check clears. LOL, #1 the Check Clears, how true, that might be the best thing I have read today! Thanks for the levity after a tough loss!

Thought I would chime in on this. I look at the schedule a little differently and rather that predict individual games, I decided to break the season into sections and predict a record for each section since you can assume there will always be an upset one way or another during a season (see last year versus NDSU as the example!).
New Mexico, Weber St, & North Dakota - Record 2-1 Youngstown St, Northern Iowa, & Indiana St - Record 1-2 Illinois St, Western Illinois, & Southern Illinois - Record 2-1 South Dakota State & North Dakota State - Record 1-1
Overall Record 6-5, but a hopeful outlook if we get some important impact from the transfers, freshman, and the changes the new coaching staff brings, we could be 7-4 or 8-3 and playoff bound? Let's hope for the best, the season starts next Wednesday with the beginning of fall camp! Go Yotes!

Great intell on Strevler! I have to think that the qualities he shows are the reason why the new coaching staff brought him in to compete for the starting QB job? CE pointed out the intagables he brings to the position and even if he is just an average thrower, he may be the best fit for this offense. I saw the spring game and neither Saeger or Simmons demonstrated that their throwing skills were much more than average, it sounds like athletically Strevler is much better, and they are all on equal footing when it comes to learning the new offense. I am going to go out on a limb and say that Strevler may have the lead to QB this team?
Speaking of intell, any insight on any of the other transfers or incoming freshman making an impression? Once again, you have to think the new coaching staff brought in athletes that fit their style of offense and defense and that their might be a transfer or a few freshman who see significant playing time imediatly? Full practice stats in less than a month, and then before you know it is game time! Go Yotes!

Saw this kid play in high school, excellent passer with even better legs. Could be a game changer. My understanding is he has 2 years of eligability left even though he will be a grad student?
