Hambone, Those are the rankings for just this year, USD has been ranked ahead of NDSU and UND before too and it will again. Just as FCS polls are beauty contests so are the rankings and tiering systems employed by these publications. And, just like in sports, it is results that matter, not polls.
I used to your link to come up with the following taken right out of the info section about USD to illustrate the point made in my previous post: "Thirty-nine U students have been awarded prestigious Fulbright, Rhodes, National Science Foundation, Boren, Truman, Udall, Jack Kent Cooke and Goldwater scholarships and grants for graduate study."
Come up with the stats for the other schools I mentioned and get back to me. =)

The inside scoop I have heard is this:
USD is angling for an invite from either the Big Sky or the MVFC. They will likely take whichever comes first.
The MVFC is preferred for obvious reasons. If the invite is secured the MVFC would likely be split in to two divisions, The Summit Division and the Missouri Valley Division.
The Summit would be composed of the 4 Dakota schools, SUU, and Western Illinois and The Valley would obviously be composed of the remaining Valley Schools.
Of course there are a million contingencies to this but that was the latest I heard as of Monday night following Coaches Corner.

All fair points.
So would you concede the top-15 if not the top-10? Having taken off my Coyote-Red tinged glasses I would think at least as high as 13 or 14 is entirely within the realm of possibility.
First things first, beat NDSU.

"First off" Mr. Admin, USD went from getting no votes to being ranked 25th and 24th in two national FCS polls. IMHO it is "likely" that fact alone could enable us to crack the top 10 with a victory in Fargo since NDSU is already ranked 18th and there are one loss teams ranked in the top 10 who lost to weaker teams than UCF.
Secondly, I am told you used to work for the Volante. That paper along with the Argus and several other papers all wrote stories discussing how USD stacked up to the institutions I referenced.
I agree with you as to the quality of the new facilities. They are top notch indeed.

I listened to Ed's comments last night at Coaches Corner and they were pointed, but not out of line. Best of all, they were all true.
The attendance there was once again back down to the 50-60 usual suspects and around 15-20 newbies. Why is that?
A win this weekend at NDSU means USD likely cracks the FCS top 10 and puts itself in great position for future recruting battles with NDSU. That is a huge deal.
An earlier poster errantly spouted their fingers off and said they thought it was a joke that USD went D-1. I will return the favor noting I think it's a joke how superior Bison fans truly think they are as a University. Yeah, your sports records are good, but you go to college to get an education first and play sports second. (that was not meant to invite positing NDSU mug shots etc...)
Can you imagine Coaches Corner next Monday night after beating the Bison and preparing for UND?
Do your part guys. Get your ass to a game and bring some friends. I took two buddies who had never been to a USD game to the NWOK State contest on Saturday and they had a blast. We hit Carey's, then tailgated, went to the game and these guys even bought USD t-shirts.
The Howling Pack continues to grow, but it can be much better. Bring friends to Coaches Corner, to Lunch with the U in Sioux Falls, to games, and get season tickets. Be an advocate of USD everywhere else.
Sure, I wear my USD gear everywhere and talk about athletics, but I also talk about the area where we have lately FLAT OUT OWNED NDSU, SDSU, UND, UNI, S. ILLINOIS, etc...in the classroom.
Whether it be Truman, Goldwater, Fulbright, or whatever the scholarly distinction, USD is on par with the Ivy League, Big 10 and Big 12 when it comes to our B-School as well as the number of scholarships and fellowships our graduates have received in the last 5 years across all facets of the education spectrum.
Our "peer" dakota schools can't say that. That isn't bragging gang, that is a fact. Be proud of that and SPREAD THE RED.

I am bringing two friends who have never been to a USD game tomorrow. Taking them to Carey's for a beer, we're tail-gating, then taking in the show. These guys are stoked up.
Got another friend who lives in the Cities to join the Howling Pack this week.
I am not a saleman by any stretch either. Everyone else can do the same thing. Get it done. Go 'Yotes!

I remember Ed mentioned that Jeremy Blount got dinged up.
He mentioned again that Jimmy Thompson is out for the year and said he would not be eligible for a medical red shirt.
That's all I can remember. Was too busy smiling about all the people there.

I read Phil Miller's article in the Star Trib after the game in which he wrote "The University of South Dakota plays in something called the Great West." As if to insinuate the Great West is some piece of garbage or some unidentified stain on your living room carpet. That something Phil is a football conference which has made a damn good showing of itself in the last 7 to 8 years thanks in large part to all four Dakota schools. That conference is having a good year in 2010 as well. I now consider Phil's reporting to be something the Trib uses to fill space. Scoreboard Phil...scoreboard. Go Yotes!

Nice work on the banner. I like the red eyes too. Kind of a post D-Days look to the Coyote.

CF, The Coaches Corners are now being held in the CJ Calloway's banquet hall to accomodate the larger crowds that have been showing up. They are still at the same 7 pm start time though.

Someone made a terrific point in the football thread about playing 2 FBS teams in football as opposed to an upper echelon FCS school to garner not only the paycheck, but also the opportunity for the national exposure like USD is currently receiving after beating Minnesota.
In the case of basketball, I was surprised to have 2 different Gophers fans ask if USD beat Creighton or vice versa this last season in basketball while attending the game this weekend in the Cities. In BOTH cases, the fans knew USD had played well against Creighton in a post-season tournament, but neither could remember the outcome.
That fact alone underscores the importance of playing high profile opponents and playing them well. To have your school's name on the ESPN ticker is one thing, but to have your school either play a team close or beat them is worth its weight in gold in program exposure.

Glad we finally have an admin who is a USD fan. A few us on the board have discussed some ideas to improve upon what we had before. Maybe we could start a running list of a few simple things people would like to see.

Present.
Does this mean we finally have an administrator...who is a Coyote fan to boot?
Pinch me, I must be dreaming. =)
