I think we finish 6-6 and 4-4 in valley, just cant quite get over the .500 hump in either. I think we will see a much more polished product this year, however, our schedule is brutal. We'd do well to win 1 road game, maybe 2.

I just saw that as well, classy way to go out. Im sure coaches of other teams will really be chomping at the bit to bring him on.

It will come, I dont know if its a generational thing or what. i suffered through the end of the Boots era and transition period as a student so I for one am ecstatic to go back to games as an alumn in a new arena with a new brand of basketball. I would guess the excitement in the fan base will grow with success on the court and from the excitement Smith percolates.

JJ, I think most of us are ecstatic and have been since the hire of Smith. I personally think James Hunter will be a Huge get for what we are going to be asking of him. Is he here to be a 20 and 10 guy? absolutely not. He will be a role player. with his size alone, he could become a 10 and 10 guy for us I think. He will be the guy asked to do the dirty work- guard the other teams best interior player, set big hard screens at the top of the key, and mostly just be BIG physical presence inside, something we have been lacking since Tyler Cain. And I am not saying those 10 points are going to come from an array of great low post moves. Based on the way Smith is recruiting, we will be built on speed and penetration, leading to what should be 3-4 dunks, layups and putbacks a game for a big guy like Hunter. Let's be honest, at 6"10 270 it doesnt take much of a seal to get an easy layup with the big men in this league. Also, comparing him to Gruis doesnt make alot of sense. 2 guys with completely different builds and styles. lets compare anthony davis to Shaq while we are at it (Maybe a stretch there).

Not to be a debby downer, but I think we are jumping the gun considerably on playoff talk and this game costing us a playoff spot. I believe we only have one open game for 2015 so maybe a home and home was not so easy to find for Herbie? There is always circumstances that the public is not aware of. Either way, Im sure he has his reasons and Im ok with our schedule. Mainly, the point I want to make is that we went 3-5 in conference last year. Before we worry so much about our out of conference schedule, we need to beat middle of the road teams in the Valley. Not getting any easier with the addition of SIU and dropping Indiana State. Just quick first glance, I like the over/under wins at 6 as of now.

I know this runs against the very purpose of a message board, i.e., speculative chatter, but I don't see much value in ranking the purported candidates without intimate knowledge beyond bare résumés, hearsay and circumstantial judgments. I wouldn't expect any of these candidates to read this message board, but in the unlikely event they do, I hope they view us as a welcoming and supportive bunch. The search firm and athletic department will make an informed decision, something none of us are equipped to do. I trust our leadership, and I'm excited for the next chapter in USD men's basketball. Well said, I could not agree more. The athletic department did a helluva job with Amy Williams, and I doubt she was on too many people's radars during the initial phases and wild speculation portion of the search. I trust them without a doubt.

Auburn fired Tony Barbee last week after the Tigers finished 14-16 and 6-12 in the SEC. Today they just hired Bruce Pearl, former Tennessee head coach. Who knows if Auburn will keep the current staff, or if Miller will want to stay because of Barbee being fired. Pearl was fired in 2011 after lying about the recruitment of Aaron Craft, who now plays for Ohio State. Pearl was on probation for 3 years. When a head coach goes, his assistants almost always go as well. Coaches want to bring in assistants who they know will find the talent for the head coach's philosophy as well as be able to have an understanding of what the head coach wants from them during practice, film, game day, etc. Pearl has been around a long time. Im sure he already knew beforehand which former or new assistants he could bring with him, and Miller will almost certainly not be one.

If nothing else, we should at least have most of the building pulling for us. If we can keep this game competitive that would be amazing in itself and also would be a big program boost as the game is on ESPN2. The biggest task for the Yotes will be slowing down Stanford's player of the year candidate Chiney Ogwumike. She's a 6'4 senior who does it all for the Cardinal. Phenomenal athlete and even better leader. Averages 27 and 12. Im sure we will load her up with double teams and hope they miss some open jump shots and threes. Hopefully we can get contreras loose for some 3's and get Seekamp going early, otherwise we may be in for a long evening. Either way, will be fun to watch. Go Yotes.

Found this tweet yesterday: Stu Whitney @stuwhitney Mar 10
That's the breaks. MT @sabecke: I set over-under at 3000 for finals with USD in it. 1/2 SDSU fans. Would be sold out the other way around.Over. Under. What a crap article by Stu in the Argus this morning, cant stand the guy. He couldn't stand the fact that SDSU was absent yesterday, so he did what he could to mention them as much as possible and undermine USD as much as possible. The guy is a hack.

Is the timing great?? not really. Will it have any impact on the women's game outcome?? absolutely none. There are distractions regardless on this stage. Clearly, Coach Williams knows what she is doing and will clear the air of any of those distractions and have her team ready to play.
Moving on, as many people said, the writing was on the wall. Whether this story leaked last night or tonight, it would have been a mood killer (knock on wood for tonight). I was as big of Joey fan as any going into this season, and I came away as disappointed as any. This team lacked discipline, clearly defined roles, and came out flat many times down the stretch. What Amy Williams and Ryun Williams have done with the women's program only solidified this decision for Herbie. An outside search and hire will give this program a facelift. Joey bleeds USD red and I admire his passion for the school, but he just is not well rounded enough to lead the program. Looking for forward to see who the face of the program will be.
How can you say we were fortunate to be in the game because of 20 turnovers? Granted that is way to many but the guys were obviously locked in hence the really high shooting percentages. We out rebounded them and they had 11 more shots, our bench out scored theirs. I get it turnovers need to be cleaned up but we did everything else right to win the game.
Needed a big win and got one. Happy for the guys and coaching staff.
Go Yotes
USD averages about a point per possession according to Kenpom, so I would agree with 123456789 that we were lucky. Each turnover essentially represents a point lost. We average about 12.5 turnovers a game so 20 at home is pretty awful. 12.5 still is not very good for a guard oriented team generally speaking. And yes we shot very well, but Omaha does not exactly play the lock down D many teams in this league play. Many of our 3's were wide open looks. will be night and day tempo and defense from Western this weekend. Looking forward to it. Win will lock us in with at least a 5 seed. Could be a lot of reshuffling in front of us at 2-4, something interesting to see how it plays out.

I agree with many of the comments so far. Weird game for the Yotes. You won't lose too many games shooting 9-14 on 3's, but you won't win many with 20 TO's. I agree with Cousin Eddie. How many times must this team struggle with ball pressure and TO's? We need to value the basketball and each possession. That definitely comes down to discipline and mental toughness, something we rarely demonstrate in end of game situations. Im definitely glad we got the W, but I came away feeling demoralized that we almost choked away another one, this time by the old Bryce Drew Valpo play.

These close losses are frustrating. I did not see the game but Im actually surprised it was this close just looking at the numbers. Bos goes 1-10 and Gruis only played 28 mins due to foul trouble? Looks like Gruis was having success when he was on the floor though. Taking away positives, I would say we got crushed on the boards and one of our goto guys went 1-10 and we only lost by 6. We show these flashes of potential and look really good for spurts. We need to put everything together for 40 mins just once, we might surprise ourselves.
I think Cousin Eddie said it best in another thread in that we have no identity. Gruis seems to be our only consistent player. When teams decide to double him or take him out of the game, we look frazzled and no one knows where to turn. Then we launch contested three after contested three as the clock winds down, or are forced in trying to beat guys off the dribble one on one.
