From what I have seen so far, I am on the I believe Joey is out wagon. Losing all these close games reflects coaching. Wins and losses are all that matters at this level. It is hard to judge a coach on a single season, but that is all Herbster has to go off of. With philosphy changes, and losing a valuable player early(Rico), Joey has obviously had some difficult decisions to make.
What Joey does have going for him is a plethora of former players who played with Joey or for Joey that will pledge for him to Herbster. Based on results alone, this would be a fairly easy call for Herbster I think. Its not always black and white though, and Herbster will be sleeping about as well as Joey is now when that time comes for him to make a decision.

You must have posted the wrong link. This picture shows only the follow through after the ball was released. The ball is already at the height of the rim and the players are on their way down. It certainly looks like a foul, but it was taken too late to show if Dykstra's hand was going for the ball or not. Therefore, intent cannot be discerned from this shot. The only contact visible in this photo is arm to arm. Contact with the face or head, or intent to contact the face or head, really cannot be assumed from it. You are correct. It cannot be from this shot alone. A flagrant 1 does not have to be a head shot. Any contact above the shoulder, which in real time, it sure looked like there was. Either way, I didnt see a whole lot of intent to play the ball. Any time you commit a foul like that from behind as hard as he swung his arm, its going to be a flagrant 1, rivalry game or not.

That picture is all over twitter. Gruis himself retweeted it. Few things, the flagrant l was absolutely the right call. Any time there is contact to the head it is automatic that it is a flagrant 1. This is part of the whole initiative to reduce concussions, make the game safer, etc. Flagrant 2 would mean that Dykstra's intent was malicious and wanted to injure or take out a player. I would definitely not categorize it as a flagrant 2 there. Dykstra and Gruis had been going at it for about 2-3 possessions before that happened. Looked like he just took a little aggression out on that foul. Nevertheless, I agree with the flagrant 1.
Secondly, I thought the officiating was poor as well. Very incosistent, especially in the post with contact/non travel calls. However, you would have a hard time convincing me that it cost USD the game. Thought there was bad calls both ways, which there always is. Our inability to execute offensively for stretches cost us the game. SDSU did a good job of shutting down Gruis and Bos. Obviously Gruis ended with 16 points but only attempted 3 FG's, while Bos was ineffective and finished with 5 points. If you had told me those 2 would shoot a combined 4-9 from the field, I would have thought we'd get blown out. Kasperbauer and Norris were solid, but I remain baffled why Thoseby plays so much. 21 mins with very little production or efficiency. I think there's better options but maybe he plays better than the other options in practice. Either way I dont see it.

NDSU

Our inability to Close out games reflects on coaching in my opinion. NDSU's ability to execute matched with our inability down the stretch was the difference. I thought our substitutions at the end was a little odd with having one of our 2 rim protectors on the bench as Braun went to the rack at will. Great game and hopefully it will boost our confidence rather than be a crushing defeat. With the pieces we have, W's are what matters, not moral victories. I think JJ would agree.

For some reason, I was under the impression we were looking at a signing class of about 20. (I think we lose something like 14 seniors?) With the number of commitments to date, and apparently a few more in the wings, there must have been a number of 'unpublicized' departures from last fall's team. I am aware of the two players who were dropped last fall, and the transfer of Foster, but does anyone know how many other players have departed? It could very well be from the Joe Glenn era departures as a whole. Seems like there were a good handful of guys dismissed the first year for academics or off field issues which may have freed up room. Also, FCS programs can have up to 63 full scholarships or divided up to 85 players receiving some sort of institutional scholarship aid. Obviously without being inside the program, its hard to know the actual breakdown of what we had available for scholly's and which of the freshmen are getting full rides/partial rides.

Im guessing we are bypassing the Peru State game in this next 4? which by all means I agree we do as it will be no more than a tuneup. But it makes more sense to go look at the next 5 conference games since that IPFW/ewweyypooey road trip is together. I think 3-2 is realistic and is doable if we can win just one close game away from the dome. Thinking we take SDSU, IUPUI, and then either denver or IPFW on the road. I actually like our odds against IPFW better than denver. Denver Made us look like a high school team with their press and traps in the 2nd half in the dome. To win ANY road games though we will need production from a 3rd and 4th player on offense. Gruis and Bos are our 2 most reliable players, and we will need the cast of Flack, Rowson, Kasperbauer, Norris to pick up some scoring if we want to win on the road.

IUPUI is a really good team, but that's still just not what I expected. For sure! Saw Seekamp with 22 minutes and a goose egg in the scoring column. Have to wonder if shes not 100%? IUPUI had our number last year too though, and Seekamps. If we get her going we will be fine. We have been getting good production from our post players. Now,we just need Seekamp to get back to her old ways and start scoring the basketball from the mid range.

That's a bad loss. Goes to show playing on the road anywhere is tough. This one was just the Yotes throwing up a stinker. Giving up 91 to a 2-13 team in front of a whopping 315 fans is not a good opener. Granted Denver has played all DI teams and several from bigger conferences so there's that at least. On to the next one! Go Yotes.

Extremely excited to have OBob back. They usually have very good mens and womens basketball teams. Not terribly hard to fathom their return when you take a glance at the Southland conference members and attendance data from the past few seasons. UMKC to follow? the WAC is in shambles.

WYOMING

kioatee has a good view of the Wyoming game. I watched in on Root TV (Directv). The cold shooting was really the issue, not to mention this was a good Wyoming team. They had plenty of opportunities, just missed a lot of shots. I think being on the road this much, and not getting in a shooting rythmn. I was thinking about that same stretch, I believe, it was 42-33 Wyoming, where we had a lot of good opportunities on offense and we were playing good defense and rebounding, but just couldn't hit the open shot to cut the lead any further. I will be interested to see how we do in the rematch, hoping we shoot better. Pomlee had some good minutes, and I can see he will add to our team once he gets acclimated. Still waiting to get Thoseby going, I've heard he is a good shooter, but isn't getting a lot of shots and is missing most. Although the expectation is to build on the success of last year, it is still going to take awhile to mesh with all the new players. Just what Joey James said on media day. I do believe, there is a lot to work with though, and count me excited about the season. I agree with mostly all of what is being said about the game. I actually though defensively we were not that bad. This was an extremely athletic team and we did a pretty good job of protecting the middle considering how big and physical they were with Nance and a few other guys down low. We were at least good enough to stay in the game had we knocked down some open looks at 3. There were some bad defensive breakdowns on switches and help side D early, but its not hard to have that happen when you are playing 10-11 guys. It will take some getting used to talking, switching, when to help, etc. I thought Pomlee looked really good on both ends. As good as he looked, Thoseby and Norris looked that bad on both ends unfortunately. Hopefully Thoseby finds his shooting stroke, and Norris becomes more comfortable the more he plays. Norris is undersized and really struggled getting shots up and made 2-3 really bad decisions on dribble drives. Anyways, I think we can play much better and hopefully we play them tighter out in Rapid after making a few adjustments and knocking down some open looks.

I will have to join those who are not fans of Wesley's playcalling. He is quite predictable and makes some really just awful calls in close games. There was a QB draw call on 1st and 10 late Saturday that blew my mind. If he does stay on, I hope JG becomes more involved with play calls when the game is on the line because Wes simply is not getting it done, and I really dont see Glen letting him go.

MG said he thinks Bouma could end up playing. That would be HUGE. You know, I won't be shocked at all to see Bouma and Roberts see the field, but it's a matter of whether or not they are able to stay on the field and be effective. Bouma was hurt in the last game, and while playing hurt he fumbled twice in the last 5 minutes of the game. We don't need him if that's what we're getting out of him on Saturday. Agreed. That will have to be something the coaches will have to assess before they decide if he can go or not. Obviously, Im guessing he will say he can go. It will be whether or not they think he can be effective. Either way, props to these two RB's for digging deep and playing through some pain the last few weeks. Every time Roberts goes to the ground he seems to be in agony.

Sounds like Bouma is out and Roberts is 50/50 at best. Our JVM QB package has not been good, so i would rather not see that. I can remember one, maybe two successful plays out of that the last 3-4 weeks. If someone is dropping back to pass, it better be Earl. JVM has enough to worry about with lining up at RB and WR. We dont need him to play QB. Line him up anywhere else and create mismatches.
