My 2$:
Oregon: L W Penn: W Montana: L NAU: W SIU: L -- SIU will be very good defensively this year. UNI: L -- UNI will be the preseason #1 in the Valley IMO. They return a ton of players. MSU: W -- MSU is always a mystery in the Valley. NDSU: L -- NDSU will be good. Defense will carry the team right away. YSU: L -- Always tough to win in their place. WIU: W -- probably a toss up but I'll go with the home team Ill St: L -- Ill State will be a good team in '14. SDSU: L -- SDSU needs to replace guys on both lines like the Bison but should be in contention for the Valley title.
4-8 overall 2-6 conference

bisoninnwmn--Would be interesting to get your picks on the bison so we can see exactly how out of reality you are....

bisoninnwmn--Would be interesting to get your picks on the bison so we can see exactly how out of reality you are.... 'out of reality'....really? Ok, tell me what teams USD is going to place above in the Valley this year. These teams are going to be tough this year: UNI, SDSU, SIU, NDSU and these teams could also be tough outs as well: MSU, Ill State and YSU. I have seen USD in person the last two years and both teams were not very good. USD will probably be better this year but so will many others in the league. Now on my NDSU picks, the Bison will probably lose 2-4 games this year. But if the new QB (Wentz) is as good as he is advertised, the Bison could have a very good year this year. Many think the Bison are going to fall on their face this year with all of the coaching and player loses but many players return that had significant playing time last year. Now are the Bison going to be as good as last year....of course not, but they will be good. NDSU was head and shoulders above just about everyone in the FCS last year and they will take a step back this year but don't think they will be a losing team. NDSU's 2nd string would have beat everyone expect Kansas State, UNI and Towson. NDSU's biggest concerns besides QB are the D-line IMO. 3 starters graduated. There is talent coming up but they haven't played in games yet. But having all 3 LBs and 3/4 of the DBs back will definitely help. The O-line lost 2 to graduation and one had to quit for medical reasons and now another has had season ending knee surgery and will redshirt. So the O-line will have 4 new starters this year. But the guys coming in played a lot last year and I suspect they will be working well as a unit by the time the conference season starts. Well, if that is "out of reality" then so be it. NDSU has proven it on the field. USD has not.

I really don't take issue with bisoninnwmn's prediction for us. No one is going to pick us to win many games until we have a good season, and he has us beating the four teams we should absolutely beat. Beyond those four, we likely won't be favored in the rest of the games (going off of preseason speculation). I believe in Joe, but there really isn't much reason for an outsider to see us finishing anywhere but near the bottom of the conference (not yet at least). We've had plenty of close losses, but at the same time the only team we've beaten by more than a possession under Glenn was Colgate. I'm sure bisoninnwmn, and the rest of our conference foes, will start seeing things a bit more like we do once we start getting some wins.
Personally, at this moment, I believe we take those four games and then find a couple more to finish .500. No game, William Penn aside, will be easy. We were starting to look really good down the stretch last season, I'm very excited to see how the coaches have built on that in the offseason.

Bison fan's perspective of the Coyotes has been skewed the last couple of seasons because we really haven't shown up in any of our games against NDSU. They've blasted us every time, so why would they think USD is any good? The reality is we are a better team than what we have shown against NDSU, as we have seen in many of the games we have played against our other opponents. I think we'll have record around .500, a little better with some luck and knocking on the door of the playoffs.

bisoninnwmn--You are not realistic to think that 2nd stringers that played in games that the bison led by 20+ points will step right in and be great. The bison will be good but their game against USD this year in the Dakota Dome for example will be very difficult and they could easily lose that game. I noticed you didn't list game by game your predictions for them so it is hard to point out game results I disagree with you. As the Yotes are concerned, any team that visits the Dome this year can lose. The Coyotes overall success this season depends on the quick development of the secondary. Our offense will be able to put points on the board and the D front 7 will be very good!!

To me the keys this season are the same as they've always been: player development and depth. Development will be most important this year in the defensive secondary. Depth will probably will always be an issue unless we can develop a magnet program (much like NDSU) that attracts many of the best players in the region.

Any idea when the depth chart will be coming out? Starting to get concerned about the defensive back depth, hurts my confidence for enough W's to get over the .500 hump.

I doubt we get a depth chart until right before our first game. The secondary worries me as well, but we do have an incredible D-Coordinator in Petrino. I have faith he will be able to get the most out of whoever ends up as the back four on defense.

I saw Van Ginkel and Colpitts play in the shrine game yesterday. They will make some youthful mistakes, but both can flat out play football. IMO a couple 3 year starters at safety. Van Ginkel may shift to a WIL backer as he puts on weight. Fenchel also looked the part. USD has a good thing going in NW Iowa!

Apparently we were picked to finish 8th in the Valley - sure as hell hope we do better than that!

If the Yotes finish 8th or worse I'll probably never watch another game.
Go SD!
