It depends, are you a football guy or a basketball guy? Every school has those who gravitate towards one or the other. As far as I am concerned the NCAA football playoffs dwarfs the Summit League tournament. Much, much bigger achievement to make the football playoffs and even bigger to advance. The most watched sporting event is the NCAA tournament not FCS playoffs. Omaha dropped football due to the fact that it loses more than it gains. Unless you are a major player in FBS or FCS most programs lose money or manage to break even with the guarantee money games, attendance etc. Basketball is one of the few at the small to mid levels that can survive due to managing less scholarships and travel budget than 60+ scholarships for football. Equipment alone is enormous! I love college football but let's be realistic here guys!

Do we really think the players are going the be bought in to a coaching staff like this? Need at least a little change, new members would instill a bigger buy in with new perspective.

Herbster is a bright, articulate guy and that video is worth watching. I would second that and admire his courage in keeping Joe Glenn as coach. Changing coaches is often not the answer. How tall is Herbster, he looks to be a five.

I feel like I hear he was captain of the Virginia Tech basketball team once upon a time. You are correct! "A 1991 graduate of Virginia Tech (B.S., marketing), Herbster was a member of the Division I Hokies men's basketball team, including serving as captain in the 1990-91 season. He earned an M.S. in education (sports management) from Virginia Tech in 1994."

Wild speculation with only a cursory review of rosters, but I can't help but wonder if the decision to stay the course doesn't contemplate peeking ahead to next season and the relative strength of the league. Not to mention Missouri State and Youngstown firing their coaches. According to ESPN.com, here is a breakdown of departing senior numbers:
1. Southern Illinois - 24 2. Illinois State - 22 3. Northern Iowa - 21 4. Missouri State - 20 5. North Dakota State - 18 6. Western Illinois - 17 7. Indiana State - 16 8. South Dakota State - 16 9. University of SD - 8
I haven't bothered to comb through the rosters to determine graduating starters and impact players, but offhand we know that SDSU, for example, is losing some big weapons. That's not to say they can't reload, of course. Just a thought.

I know it is just a thought but I sure hope you are wrong on this assessment. I would put just as much weight on the opportunity to recruit new talent as a means of improving team performance as I would retaining existing players. Losing 8 seniors means you're pretty much stuck with what you have.
If we would have won some conference games, there would have been room for optimism. Not so much now.

I watched last night's Pac-12 Championship game with Oregon beating Arizona 51-13. It was 51-7 until Arizona scored a touchdown on the last play of the game while half of the Oregon defense had already started to celebrate the win as they watched their coach get the Gatorade bath.
Some interesting comparisons between USD's box score and Pac-12 South Champion Arizona's box score:
Although the Ducks hung 673 total yards of offense on the Yotes, they also drilled the Wildcats with 627 total yards of offense and there are some positive signs to look at for the Coyotes when comparing the two contests against a team that has a real shot at winning a National Championship.
USD had 19 first downs while Arizona only managed 10. Arizona only converted on 3 of 15 third downs while USD was 7 of 17. On fourth down conversions Arizona and USD were both 0-2. Arizona only managed 224 total yards of offense with 113 of that coming through the air (averaged 4.3 yards per pass) and 111 yards on the ground with 35 carries (3.2 yards per rush avg). The Coyotes meanwhile drummed up 370 total yards of offense with 198 yards through the air (5.8 yards per pass avg) and 172 yards of rushing on 39 carries (4.4 yards per rush avg). Arizona had 8 penalties for 67 yards and 2 turnovers while the Yotes had only 5 penalties for 35 yards and only 1 turnover. Arizona's time of possession was 21:05 seconds while the Coyotes held on to the ball for 39:04.
Given the fact that the Yotes lost Kevin Earl in this game and Ryan Saeger came off the bench to fill in makes this comparison even more encouraging. Coach Glenn stated before that game he wanted to take care of the ball, have a balanced attack and slow the game down with time of possession and that's what his team did. The only problem of course was they were playing an Oregon team that can put points up on you in a hurry. We all know the Coyotes have been snake bit the last two years with injuries all over the field. If they can find a way to stay healthy, get some key players where needed, and develop some of the guys we have, I'm hopeful we'll start seeing some improvements quickly.
I agree with previous posters that changes are still needed within the staff like adding additional personnel, shifting some responsibilities, etc... I also believe we need to look at changing our approach on defense. I think most of the Valley teams run a 4-3 but we continue to run a base 3-4. When coaches start scratching heads wondering why we can't get a pass rush on the QB and our secondary is getting burned, well, that's a pretty simple first step in my opinion. There would be more 3rd and longs against rushing teams with this approach because backs aren't tearing through huge holes in to the second level on 1st down either. It was clear having additional bodies in the 2nd level did not help with our pass protection so why not give this a shot? If you want to beat the teams in the Valley, it's clear to me we have to play Missouri Valley football and do what other successful teams are doing.
In short, change is needed. Now is the time to make the change. We have some very solid pieces of the puzzle back on the roster and on the staff, we just need more. This team needs fans and it needs financial support. I will continue to be a fan and give to the Howling Pack. I look forward to a better season in 2015. As always, Go Yotes!

You actually think USD did well when comparing how Arizona did last night? You ever think maybe Oregon was trying to make a statement to the playoff committee? Maybe they didn't give a crap about playing a team from South Dakota? This is such a reach. Your team was absolutely awful this year. Changes need to be made like you said. No smack. Just truth and everyone knows it. And don't worry, State would get beat by 50-60 too.

Oregon has been "trying to make a statement to the playoff committee" in every game this season kiddo, including ours. Oregon went for two on their first touchdown of the game, that should tell you all you need to know about whether they were looking to make a statement or not against USD. As you said above, "Just truth and everyone knows it." Thanks for lurking.
