The coaching change at Colorado State threw Howard Houston's recruitment for a loop.
The 6-foot-1.5, 297-pound, two-star junior college lineman said that the Jim McElwain staff at CSU was looking at him heavily and things are picking up a little under new leader Mike Bobo.
Houston, a Foothill College (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) product, by way of Columbia, Mo., has seen his recruiting warm up after the end of the dead period. He doesn't plan to sign at his next school until this spring.
Junior college defensive lineman Howard Houston doesn't plan to sign at his next school until the spring. "It's going good actually. It picked up after the dead period like I thought it would. Now I'm just pretty much waiting to see. I don't think I'll be signing on signing day just because of some schools that have come into the picture," Houston said of recruiting.
"I don't want to feel rushed into making a decision without at least taking visits."
Colorado State's new staff is evaluating the JUCO defender, he reports.
"I was actually talking with them this morning. Just catching up. I know there's been a lot of coaching changes up there and some of the coaches that were talking to me pretty heavy, they're not there anymore," Houston said.
"I'm trying to get back in touch with all of them now."
An offer from the Rams could eventually come.
"I know they were talking about it with my coach. The coach that left, now I'm trying to see if the new coaching staff likes my film as much as they did," Houston said.
Most of the schools Houston has been in contact with want him to play on the edge. He feels comfortable on the interior of the defensive line, but he's willing to move to the outside.
Indiana State, South Dakota, Boise State, Southern Mississippi, Nicholls State, Southeastern, Northern Colorado, Western Kentucky and others have been in touch in the past week. Houston will take an official visit this weekend, but he isn't in a rush to make a decision.
"I've been through Colorado. We'd drive to Missouri, I'd drive through Denver and stuff," Houston said.
"I have a visit this weekend to South Dakota. I'm not too worried about weather."
Houston wanted to pledge to the Rams when McElwain was in town, but it didn't work out.
"When I was talking to Colorado State [before], I wanted to commit. Then they were starting to go through all that coaching stuff. You know how that goes, when the coach leaves, you don't really talk to them anymore," Houston said.
"They were going to [offer], but they were waiting on grades. Their coach and my coach were good friends back in the day."
The JUCO route has been a maturing process for Houston.
"I like it. It's an experience. I'm most definitely ready to go. This was different," he said.

Keep it mind, I am not trying to call anybody out, just pointing out that I understand the decision of the coaching staff. Accepting an out-of-state commit early on when there is an in-state kid that is worthy of a scholarship is not easy. In doing so, they effectively took themselves out of the running for Taryn - hence the admission from him that USD didn't pursue him very heavily and he didn't "feel it." We already had our QB. I like that we did go that route too. I would love to get more of the SD kids but truth be told a lot of them are choosing State right now. And thats fine I get it. Until we start being more consistant in winning that is going to happen. From the recruits I have seen so far they look really solid. Legit small to mid FBS talent. And it seems like maybe the staff has taken a different approach this year in recruiting. They are not going after the same kids and areas as the other MVFC teams especially State and NDSU unless they know the kid is really commited to the Yotes. I think this new approach, if it truly is a new approach and not just my assumption, is paying off big time for us this year with the types of kids we are getting in. This truly seems like the best class we have had in the Glenn era. If we cant get the kids in this area like Taryn, which we have not in the past couple years, try new areas. A lot of the playmakers on UNI (Daurice Fountain) NDSU (Urzendowski) and State were also recruited by Glenn but just didnt choose the Yotes. I commend Glenn for doing this and is the main reason I wanted him to stay so we were not rebuilding all of these pipelines again. He will get it done, he always has. This class has the playmaker we were all talking about needing last year along with solid size/hopefully talent in the trenches. Nice Work Glenn and Co. so far. Looking forward to next week.

I also agree...which is why we need to A) improve the Dome B) Support our FB program with higher coaches salaries and more full time assistants. and C) win some games...hard to get the best recruits winning 2 games. That said, I think that the staff has a nice list of commits so far, just need to hold on until Wednesday and maybe secure a couple more studs! Go Yotes

National Signing Day is approaching so i thought I would pop into this thread to check it out. Normally I just click on once a day and galnce over it but I took the time to actually read it today. First off, Cousing Eddie has put in some solid work and deserves some recognition. Maybe we need a poster of the year award.
On to the recruits, looks like a good crop of guys coming in. A couple of themes coming out of this thread are in-state versus out of state recruits. I will go back to the fact that due to USD's location we are in a unique position to recruit to the south moreso than any other school in the Dakotas. I have no problem pulling our recruits out of Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, and Oklahoma. First off, check out the general student population, you'll find a lot of students are form Iowa and Nebraska attending USD, probably much more diverse than up at State. Second reason I like out of state recruits, better football.
A question was asked earlier about how Iowa Class 4A stacks up against South Dakota Class AAA, well I've watched both for years and it's really not close, Iowa 4A football is much better. Heck, the top Iowa 3A programs would beat the Sioux Falls champ, even a lowly 2A school, Iowa City Regina, would beat the SF champ. Of course they are the outlier since that is a football intensive school that is arguably the best football school in the state regardless of class. If it sounds like I am bagging hard on SD HS football, well don't get too upset because it's not personal, it's simply numbers. There is simply a greater population in the other states, which means more players, which means there is a likelyhood of better, deeper teams. The population of Omaha alone is larger than this state, think about it. I didn't put 2+2 together and realize the Simmons kid was the QB from down in Council Bluffs. Yeah, he's a good one. I think Glenn & Co. made the right call on not waiting to land that kid. I was pretty bummed out about last season, now, hope springs eternal. I like what I am seeing from this class of recruits, there is potential here, now coach them up.

I know this yrs SF Lincoln team had 2 scholarship kids that are going to the U, and 6 going D2. A few yrs ago the very good SF Washington team had 5 FCS kids (including Sam Cooke) and 1 FBS top quality recruit plus 4 or 5 go D2. Just interesting....

I'm having trouble finding the recruit list for WDM Dowling, I'm sure something will be more available after NLI Day. They usually have multiple kids sign with FBS schools.

Last year was a downer, for sure, but I too am excited about this potential class of recruits. I'm also looking forward to seeing last year's Red Shirts, I believe we may have a couple of impact players in that group. It is the season for optimism, as always, FIGHT SOUTH DAKOTA!

Just to add (very little, probably) to the conversation, about 10 years ago or so I remember reading an article in Sports Illustrated that ranked the 50 states concerning the quality/strength of their HS football teams. South Dakota was ranked 50th.
Don't know what criteria were used - maybe heresay - but it has stuck in the back of my mind for some odd reason. Anyway, posts about football recruits are the stuff of what fan boards are for in my opinion. Thank you all, especially cuz.

I was curious about the previous post and performed a quick search on the rankings of state HS programs. Sure enough SD was 49 out of 50 states in the survey below. Survey's such as these are interesting to look at but with anything of this nature shouldn't be taken too seriously. I'm sure there are top flight athletes coming out of SD football that could compete successfully anywhere at any level. Nevertheless, playing against better competition does help an athlete (and coaches) refine their game. californiapreps.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1290345On a separate note, I am new to USD football and have been impressed by the effort the program is putting forth. I really like Coach Glenn (and the AD too). Glenn is a class act, appears very knowledgable, and I appreciate his enthusiasm. I watched his post-game press conferences during this past season and he is always direct and provided an honest assessment of the team's perfomance. Let's face it -- the MVC is VERY tough competition. I saw tremendous effort put forth by the team throughout the season and many impressive moments. The key for this team is demonstrating greater consistency in all aspects of the game and playing at a high level for four quarters of football. The good news is they can only move up in the conference! Let's hope the redshirt players will add to the overall quality of play. GO YOTES!!!
