Defending Champs. I love it. Felt kind of foreign typing that to be honest. When was the last time we could say that?

The Coyotes get by far the easiest first round opponent in IPFW. They played tough in Fort Wayne but I don't think they can hang with the Yotes unless they really D up big time and stop the vaunted Coyotes offense. The nice thing about the Coyotes is that they have so many scoring options and don't have to rely on one or two players. In the second round just like the last regular season week they will draw either IUPUI or Western Illinois. Last week I thought Western Illinois was the team to play but it certainly no longer seems that way. The Leathernecks are really going to want to avenge their last second loss to South Dakota in last years first round. Whether they can do so is another story. The final will be another battle for the ages if it's the two South Dakota schools. The Jacks are playing very well right now but much of that is because they have been at home lately. They will be a force for sure in Sioux Falls like they usually are.
For now I will pick a South Dakota win over IPFW 86-67.

We gotta keep this topic hot from now all the way through the tourney. We have a team here that knows how to get the job done. A team with 2 very good seniors and a supporting cast that does more than their own as far as taking the fair share of the burden off the star players. When push comes to shove there is not a team I would take over the Yotes in a close game decided in the final two minutes. Contreras has ice in her veins and has already hit a big time end of game shot to propel the Yotes to a win last year against the Leathernecks. If the Yotes need her to come through again she will be ready to step up. Seekamp will always be there with her overall game in scoring and distributing the basketball. It appears that Tia Hemiller is fully healthy now and the bigs such as McCloud, Arens and Loffler give real nice depth to the front court. Depth that can prevent other teams from being too big of an offensive force inside. This team is about as balanced as they come as far as contributions from all positions on the court. Is there a 3 person tandum better than Contreras, Seekamp and Hemiller in the league. I wouldn't bet on it. By thinking back this years Coyote team might be the best overall team in Coyote Women's Basketball history.

The depth of this squad is really its strength. They have bona fide stars in Seekamp, Contreras, but being able to have Arens, Stewart, Hoff, Liveringhouse come off the bench and keep the quality of play at a high level is really a difference maker.

And, of course, it helps being coached by the Summit League Coach of the Year...
Congrats!!

The championship game is a toss-up game. If USD rebounds and plays defense the score could very well be flipped in favor of USD. I want to see a sellout at The Denny for the women's final if both the Jacks and Yotes make it. That would look great on ESPNU and it would definitely catch NCAA officials eyes. Here's to an All-South Dakota final!

Lets not pencil in Western Illinois just yet. They are down 11-0 to IUPUI at the first media timeout. The Leathernecks are cold and IUPUI has pressed the issue so far.

25-9 Jaguars. They aren't cooling down much and are using their athletisism to get out in transition. Not much sign of Ashley Luke so far.

34-25 IUPUI at half. The Jags were up by as much as 19 but Western was able to cut into the lead before half. It's very difficult to say which team the Yotes would rather play.

42-41 Western Illinois. They have stormed back. Under 12:00 to go in the game.
