So here we are at the final and another head to head matchup with SDSU. Neither team has ever lost a Summit League tourney game to any other team but each other. The Coyotes are going for their second straight NCAA tourney birth after SDSU has dominated the automatic bids for years. Neither the Jacks nor the Yotes would probably say they have played their best at this tourney but both are still here. For the Coyotes it's going to be very important to not become too stagnent on offense and use ball movement to get open shots. On defense it's going to be important to not allow the Jacks to penetrate for easy baskets close to the rim. Make them shoot over the top as they have been struggling shooting the ball. It's also important to hit the glass as the Yotes got dominated on the boards in Brookings.
I think if the Jacks win I see them winning going away. In a close game decided in the final 5:00 I like the Coyotes chances with their seniors Contreras and Seekamp being able to hit the shots that matter. The Jacks have struggled in some close games this year but the Coyotes have won all theirs that have been in league play.
It's time to let the Jacks fans leave the arena disappointed this time around.

Regardless of tomorrow's outcome, reaching the finals in 3 straight years (in only 3 years of eligibility) says a lot about this program. They're certainly capable of getting it done tomorrow. It's going to be a long 8 months leading up to the football game if SDSU can say they've ended both Coyote basketball teams' seasons. If anything, let's hope tonight's loss by the men will light a fire in the women as they are now the sole focus of the remainder of the basketball season. I expect the seniors to shine tomorrow. Loeffler has been one of the unsung heroes so far in the tournament in my opinion. She's been surprisingly good from the perimeter and she's almost always a lock for the mid-range jumper from the corner. Hopefully Contreras can get hot early. It's gonna take a total team effort.
Prediction: USD 78, SDSU 71

Well, this game sure feels like deja vu from last night's game.

Down 31-13 with 5:15 left in the half. I'm glad I am unable to watch. Probably unbearable.

USD is shooting 3-25 for 12% from the field and SDSU is shooting 50%

HALF: South Dakota State 37, South Dakota 19. Coyotes went nearly 12 minutes between baskets, shot 4-of-31.
Sounds like it can't get much worse again. Yote men and women saving some of their worst bball of the year for the tourney.

Something fishy about both men and womens teams shooting like garbage. Deflate-gate?

Trading baskets isn't going to get us back into this one.

Is this the part where we pretend like we would rather play in the WNIT?

I knew that the Coyotes shot poorly in the first half but I didn't realise it was 4-31 bad. The Jacks played good defense but the Yotes were missing close in shots and open threes. At one point in was 17-5 Jacks and I felt the Coyotes were outhustling them and out rebounding them. The Coyotes men and women had a good tourney but the games that they were eliminated were nightmare games. Games where absolutely everything went wrong in the first half for both teams. It is something that happens but to have both teams have the same lightning strike twice against them is really unfortunate. It was like there were demons in the premier center. Both teams missed decent shots and just didn't get any help from the rims at all. The crowd was good but there was just not a chance for the Yote fans to get into the game. The team couldn't sustain any momentum. The Coyotes got to within 13 once but the game was never really in doubt. It's too bad that a team that played so well and won the tourney last year had to end with such a thud.
the WNIT is probably next but it will be some tournament. The Coyotes could make a pretty decent run. The Coyotes will lose Contreras, Loffler and Seekamp who won tourney MVP. Those are some ginormous losses. The Yotes are here for the long run but next year might take a step back. Amy Williams preached defense from the beginning of the year all the way through it but the team could never seem to be consistant on that end. They were up and down. It's games like today that the defense just isn't quite good enough to be able to survive off shooting days. Not many teams could survive shooting 13% for an entire half. If the Yotes could have held the Jacks to 29 instead of 37 the task would have been much more doable. Ya can't get behind a good defensive team like SDSU and expect to be able to come back from that kind of deficit. I would have gladly traded some of the scoring for a little extra on the D end. Next year the Coyotes need to get back to their defensive roots that used to carry them. I remember not too long ago the Coyotes would always play lock down D but struggled to score often. That changed in a hurry. But the team that we had was plenty good enough, just had one bad half that cost them the season. They were good enough to get through the Summit 13-3 which was the best record of men or women. That is a nice feather in the cap (winning the Summit) going forward to be able to sustain excellent basketball for a long period of time.
The Coyotes had good size at the post but aren't as big or long as the Jacks in spots 1 through 3. That is some of the reason that the Yotes perimeter defense might suffer a bit. The Yotes aren't a real quick team either so that hurts the ability the get to the rim and prevent other teams from getting there as well. They are a very physical team which helps when the officials let them play.
Amy Williams is very intense and that should help in bringing good players that will be the future of Women's basketball. She said in a recent interview that this is a dream come true in being able to have this job. She talked very highly of the big time event that the Summit Tourney is. That might help quite a bit in her desirability to stay in Vermillion for awhile. She has been so good for this program and I can't wait to see what she can do going forward now that the program has had a real taste of success.

Is this the part where we pretend like we would rather play in the WNIT? Sure is! Playing at home against losing teams from bigger states is far better than being on the biggest stage. That may be an actual quote from last year. Even an average day shooting would have been a win. Sure picked the worst day to have an off game.

Is this the part where we pretend like we would rather play in the WNIT? Not sure why that comment was made. But USD will get invited to WNIT and should be in position to host one or more games. I hope Coach Williams and her team do well -- Yote fans will see a team or two in the Dome who have not been there before but will be well known schools.

Nicole Seekamp was awarded tournament MVP again. Three consecutive years that title has gone to a USD player.
