I actually like the Rushmore's quite a bit. Why wait for the activists to get involved lets just get the ball rolling and get that name changed before anyone else in South Dakota steals it from us. I will start the petition. LOL :-) Another cool name would be the Badlanders. We could do what the Washington Nationals do with their political mascots and get 4 mascots with each one having a different president's head on it.

Going into the smack section and seeing this thread again at this time of the year makes me ask again, what is UND honestly doing in the Big Sky? They are currently playing in the Big Sky tournament out in Reno, a full 1600 miles and two time zones away from Grand Forks. How is that at all a more favorable situation than the Summit League? It'd be one thing if the conference were on a different level or something but this season I am seeing the Big Sky with an RPI of 27 out of 32 conferences and the Summit at 11th.
I can't think of a more geographically isolated institution on an all-sports basis than UND, aside from the mish mash of teams currently forming the WAC (hello UMKC and the former Great West). Are they just that spiteful towards NDSU to the point of refusing to be in the same conference? I should think the Summit would take them in a heartbeat and they could remain in the Big Sky for just football if the MVFC isn't accepting of them. Just makes no sense.

Who knows what is true when nothing is officially public but I have heard the Big Sky does not want UND for football only and the old nickname battle is what kept them out of the Summit. I would hope within the next couple years now that the nickname battle is over they would be in the Summit and MVFC. The old NCC would be complete in the same conference again.

It's a football thing for UND, they have no other home. They can't risk giving up a full membership and going with an affiliate membership or they could end up like Idaho in the Sun Belt and be given the boot. They have a place at the Big Sky table and they have to keep it until, possibly, the MVFC comes calling someday.

Re-reading this post, while navigating to the most recent in this thread reminds me of halftime in the WNIT final. Didn't we see George, Tom, Teddy & Abe dressed just the way you stated? Trying to make free throws as I remember. Hmmm, maybe I (we) have Herbster's ear or something!

Not smack but keeping the UND discussion together - UND announced today that they are dropping baseball and men's golf: www.grandforksherald.com/sports/4007776-watch-und-athletics-announces-elimination-baseball-mens-golfThe reason given is lower than expected revenues due to dropping prices of oil and other commodities. These sports must have been on the chopping block for a while if a drop in revenue would see them suddenly get axed entirely. In other news UND also recently won the men's hockey NCAA title, their 8th title and first since 2000.

Good decision for UND. Baseball and Golf just don't work in Grand Fricken Forks North Dakota. Too damn cold up there. They should put most of their resources towards indoor sports. I still remember going up there in mid march of 1993 one year to watch the Coyotes in mens basketball and that place was so cold that day that they really needed to invent a new month colder and more miserable than January. There is December, January and Grand Forks.

Shoot, I was in Minneapolis this past weekend and while driving on I-35 through Burnsville I was in a freaking blizzard, straight up whiteout conditions. This is in April. There wasn't much accumulation but the fact it was still snowing and it was freezing cold all weekend in mid-April was enough. It was cold enough that overnight Friday the coffee I left in the car froze solid and there were many retention ponds that iced over.
I love baseball but it just doesn't work for colleges in northern climates. They are at a huge competitive disadvantage against the southern schools and the costs of shipping teams to the south to play for weeks on end is outrageous considering it is a non-revenue sport. I don't really blame any northern school that drops baseball for those reasons. On the flip side though, there is a popular winter sport these schools should all be picking up to fill the void, and North Dakota is very, very good at it.

I am with you on hockey I just wish it wouldn't be the same season as basketball. If it could only run from March through June that would be much more desirable.

Still disappointed in the name they chose. "Fighting Hawks" is pretty generic. Before they changed the name to the Sioux in 1930 they were known as the Flickertails. It may not sound that aggressive, but at least it was unique. Oh well. Decisions these days on naming things are pretty bland and lame. It ends up being the lowest common denominator of something that riles up or offends the least amount of people. Like they did a friggin focus group on it, or something.
Kind of like the Sanford-Coyote or Coyote-Sanford Arena, or whatever it is. Lame name.
"The Den" is better, and maybe it will catch on anyway.

If we all just keep calling it "The Den" then it will happen. Organically grown names are the best of all. Self glossing and trying to force names, traditions, trophies, etc. never works. Case in point, look at how Iowa and Nebraska fans view the Hero trophy, kind of lame. Or the Dakota Marker, definitely forced and lame.
