I have taken a little time to think about this all and I have come to the conclusion that I believe our coaches are really looking to run the QB a ton going forward. As has already been pointed out, assuming all of the current QBs stay with the program, Saeger and Simmons can run the ball very well. One need only look at the NDSU game to see Saeger's production and Simmons numbers from HS and his physical build speak for themselves. Then you add in the known characteristics of Steveler - one of the fastest guys on U of M's roster, a physical specimen that practices what he studies (Kinesiology), and a guy that set a record for QB rushing at Minnesota against SJSU. The coaches will have significant depth at the position and should be able to "absorb" any dings they may take along the way. I don't think it is an exaggeration to say that the STYLE of this team will be similar to what Oregon wants/likes to do. Fast. Tempo. Read. React. I would agree with you about the style of offense it appears we will be running next year and it should be fun to watch. Since Streveler has two years of eligibility and he seems to be intent on playing QB it will be interesting to see how the coaches utilize all three of these guys and if all their reps will actually be at QB. Streveler likely will be one of the best athletes on the team so they will have to get him on the field. I wonder if Streveler was too good of a talent to pass up trying to get or if it is a bit of an indication of what the coaches think of Saeger for next year and Simmons longer term. Side note, part of the strategy of offering scholarships to a number of guys who already have power 5 offers must be to be on the kids radar should they decide to transfer from a power 5 school down the line.

That could be part of it. Another part of it is simply building a brand, creating buzz, being there as a safety net in the event many of these kids do not qualify at the FBS schools or are fringe offers that could be withdrawn at any time. The big place where we are doing this is Florida with Coach Ockinga's connections. There you have powerhouse schools, so you offer the star and then watch the rest of the team. Later on you offer the next level teammate and there is a connection when he is talking to his star friend. At the end of the day, it is probably pretty enduring with the school's head coach. If you offer his kids, he can become your school's biggest cheerleader when the local "lower level" schools are throwing out offers to keep these kids closer to home.

I don't follow athletes, but I glanced at Streveler's Twitter. He's a pretty funny guy.

Through the grapevine I have heard some interesting takes on Chris. It sounds like there is a belief that he fits into the offense the coaches want to run perfectly. Apparently he really runs the zone-read option well and is very smart, capable of reading the defense quickly - this will allow for the tempo of the offense to run at a very high level, in the manner the coaches desire. This is the type of QB that may potential elevate the entire program, not just the offense.
Those are pretty high expectations, so I will believe it when I see it. Regardless, I am excited for fall!

So are you assuming or have you heard that Chris was promised the starting job?

Agreed, he probably wasn't promised the job just as Saeger probably wasn't promised the job out of spring ball. Chris must have been given a pretty strong feeling by the coaches that he would have high likelihood of winning the job though. It looks like he wants to be a QB so I can't imagine he would transfer to USD if he was expecting to sit on the bench for a year behind Saeger or be moved to another position.

I recall hearing the MN OC say that Strevler ran the read option in the San Jose game as well as any QB he had coached. That included chandler harnish from NIU and all the previous MN qbs. That's was in his very first start ever.
I've followed this guy for a while. He was under recruited coming out of HS but had a record of 30 -2 as a starting QB in one of the toughest conferences in the state of IL. Had a lot of interest from bigger schools but once MN offered, he accepted and he told all the other schools to go away. He was loyal with his commitment to MN. His HS coach called him the best leader he ever coached - and that includes several D1 athletes included Green Bay RT Brian Bulaga. You all are getting one heck of a football player and possibly even a better character guy. Just watch and see. Players, coaches fans media are going to love him. He plays hard, he knows how to win and he's just going to be fun to watch. Can't wait to see how this team progresses under his leadership.

Very excited to see this kid in red. He sounds like an impact player regardless of whether he is at QB or not (though I'll be surprised if he isn't our starting QB at New Mexico).

I'm computer challenged but if someone can post his senior hudl highlights, he shows excellent illusiveness, very good speed, is strong and can throw the ball. His passing mechanics just need a little work. He is an excellent candidate to run the new Yote offense!! The battle for starter between him an Ryan should be intense!
