I recall hearing the MN OC say that Strevler ran the read option in the San Jose game as well as any QB he had coached. That included chandler harnish from NIU and all the previous MN qbs. That's was in his very first start ever. I've followed this guy for a while. He was under recruited coming out of HS but had a record of 30 -2 as a starting QB in one of the toughest conferences in the state of IL. Had a lot of interest from bigger schools but once MN offered, he accepted and he told all the other schools to go away. He was loyal with his commitment to MN. His HS coach called him the best leader he ever coached - and that includes several D1 athletes included Green Bay RT Brian Bulaga. You all are getting one heck of a football player and possibly even a better character guy. Just watch and see. Players, coaches fans media are going to love him. He plays hard, he knows how to win and he's just going to be fun to watch. Can't wait to see how this team progresses under his leadership. Awesome info! Thanks!

You may be right, but I just don't think he can throw the ball very well. He always reminded me of Taylor Martinez from Nebraska. Great athlete but had a lot of trouble in passing situations. Maybe he's better and didn't get a chance or maybe he'll be such a great athlete it won't matter.

SDSU - what are you basing that observation on? He drove the team to their only score at TCU when he came in for an injured Leidner and threw a TD to Max Williams on 4th and Goal. In the SAn Jose game yes he was 1 for 7 but if you look at the passes, 1 was a dropped TD pass that was in KJ's hands and two other times receivers ran the wrong routes. Put those 3 plays in as completions and he's 4 for 7. I think you and all gopher fans have a way too small body of work to really analyze. You could be right and only time will tell.

I hope this kid turns out to be great. He better be able to sling it around a bit as I would think that would be a very important requirement in this offense.

After watching a few scrimmages this spring, it seemed to me that the ability to run the read option successfully is a greater asset in this offense than a gun slinger.

I certainly wouldn't say anyone on the spring roster would be considered a true gunslinger. Right now, I think athleticism would be the wild card for the QB race. If this kid is head and shoulders above Saeger as an athlete, he will most likely be the starter at QB IMO. Other than leadership, RS doesn't bring much else that would make you say "this is our guy". Unfortunately, his performance at NDSU last year proved to be more of the exception rather than the norm. I am excited to see what this kid can do, but at the same time, whoever gives us the most consistent chance to win, is who I hope gets the starting nod. Any thoughts on whether Coach N. will be open to a 2 QB system? I know people say if you have 2 starting QBs than you don't have any, but as our neighbors to the north saw last year, there are some situations when it can work.

QB gets all the attention and we all understand why, but our offensive success will ultimately be predicated upon the production of our offensive line. I hope Coach OB can get the hogs up to snuff!

I think a big factor in the success of any team sport is leadership. Athletic ability and coaching are big factors, too, but the quarterback position in particular demands someone who can bring out the best in others.
I am reserving judgement as well and hoping for the best.

I agree about leadership at the QB position, but if it comes down to a guy who has great leadership skills but not as much ability and a guy with ability but not as much leadership, give me the guy who can play and the back up can lead from the sideline.

Here is my take - Strevler is loved by his teammates he has more than earned their respect. I suspect he will be able to do the same thing at USD. I know the new USD staff was looking for someone to set the pace and based on their due diligence they think they found it. Strevler's numbers coming out of HS I think were actually better than Aaron Bailey who has ended up at UNI and he has done pretty well.
Time will tell how it all plays out but it certainly looks like wherever he ends up playing he should be a positive for the team. His experience in a D1 program and overall maturity should be a great addition. It is going to be exciting come fall.

Because the coaching staff only allowed him to throw 7 passes against San Jose St. And I agree it's too small of a number, but why didn't he get a better opportunity? Croft looked terrible too and they burned his redshirt. Anyways, I hope he does well. I liked him out of HS.

My take on this is that he will at a minimum add athleticism to the roster. While the Taylor Martinez comparison was meant to illustrate that he may not be a good QB, I would compare his ability to Tre Roberson at Illinois State. I would also go so far to say more than half of the MVFC teams would have if given the chance taken Martinez over their starter.
An overly athletic QB can make up for some other deficiencies and turn a broken play into a positive. Noah Shepard was a great example in our recent past. Dante followed him up and also had some of those same characteristics.
Nielson's offense will be a fast-paced run and short to mid distance pass offense first that takes shots down the field a half dozen times a game. There are option features to many of their plays and having a quick/good decision maker will be of equal importance.
The OL/ the DL (especially the interior DL depth)/ and Corners are the weak spots of this team. Unless there are some significant improvements in the offseason at these positions which I would think is unlikely - the team will struggle because of this. How did the cupboard get so bare with OL? Striking how few 4th and 5th year players USD has versus 1st and 2nd year players. Anyone on twitter can see how much more active this staff appears to be on the recruiting trail - visiting prospects and participating in coaching clinics (great opportunities to network and build respect with HS coaches)
Count me as one of the fans that is extremely excited to see Chris choose USD. Saeger is a senior and will have every opportunity to retain his spot - competition and depth will make the team better either way.
USD will make their move to contender status with this staff. Next year could be rocky as they learn, but I expect to see some improvement.

Croft looked terrible too and they burned his redshirt. Anyways, I hope he does well. I liked him out of HS. Couple of things to note. If you watched that the UM/SJSU game, there running game was working quite well, so they simply didn't throw the ball. (Gophers went on to do that in a handful of games last year.) Also, and likely more important, the Gophers O-line & receivers were a full-blown dumpster fire last year. It was very rare when FBS level blocking and route-running happened on the same play. In most back-up QB situations, the coaches simplify the offense and minimize the number of passes, but for that Gopher team, it meant throwing 7 passes instead of the standard 13. In USD's case, Chris will be able to use athleticism to get out of problems much easier, which should be exciting.
