Assuming our 2016 numbers included WNIT? That explains our decline... but what's the reason for state's decline?

Now that the regular season is done, I wanted to take another look at all the Summit League's home attendance numbers again (I did this last year too). Also I wanted to add UND to see what they might bring to the league.
For this I used official home attendance, which does include any post-season home games. I would filter those games out if it was easy to do so for all teams, but, alas: it is not.
A couple of observations:
1. UND's fans consistently support WBB, and will help us all raise the bar. 2. SDSU's home attendance this year was at its lowest point in at least 10 years, and probably longer. I wouldn't call it a trend at this point, and obviously they are by far the most consistent fan base. 3. USD's base has gotten through a rough patch, but has by far the highest upward trend. Past history shows it is sustainable, too. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Mick. 4. ORU and NDSU are trending down, but have potential based on the past 5. Fort Wayne and Western Illinois have a nice upward trend (both are in smaller communities, and I think that plays a factor) 6. Denver, Omaha, and IUPUI (Indianapolis) seem to just hover around 500, regardless of their seasons. All are in very large cities with lots of other sports teams to compete with. IMHO, that's the major factor.

Yes, without the WNIT numbers, we would show a steady increase from last year to this one. I have no idea about State. Probably just natural fluctuations based on schedule, OOC game attendance, etc.

Yes, without the WNIT numbers, we would show a steady increase from last year to this one. I have no idea about State. Probably just natural fluctuations based on schedule, OOC game attendance, etc. I think that USD's new basketball facility made a difference in the numbers, too. I know when SDSU opened their new football facility, people were talking about them not selling out games. I don't think either USD or SDSU planned on instantly selling out their new places (or they might have built them too small) but they should help. I'm sure it is a lot nicer to watch a basketball game in a basketball facility instead of a football facility. SDSU played Notre Dame at home last year. That game brought in over 5500 fans. That is close to the bump USD got out of a WNIT game. Of course, USD played every WNIT game at home except for the Gopher game(I think) so that put USD up there over SDSU. I think losing Miller and Ober (for a few games) hurt SDSU some, too. They still had 3 all-conference players playing but they lost their best player. It could be addition by subtraction because that way some of the bench players got to play more. Some of those players family and friends might show up more but would you rather watch a Seekamp or a Liveringhouse play? Nothing against Kate but Nicole was a game changer.

Wow, interesting graph! Never would have believed that coming into the season with who we were returning. Guess it really goes to show that you need to bring in teams people want to see. We have OU and Iowa coming in next year, so I expect to see an uptick in our attendance next year.

Good point, I forgot they hosted Notre Dame last year

Summit League scheduling didn't do USD or SDSU any favors on the New Years Eve games either.

I find the contrast between the men and women's (BB) attendance patterns interesting. The women's teams fan bases are more stable and less prone to "flashing" than the men's fans, even when teams are having good seasons, the changes are more gradual.
It seems like women's basketball is much less popular in larger urban areas than the smaller college communities. Omaha, Denver and Tulsa have each shown that they can support a winning men's team with loads of fringe fans and casual fans, but their women's teams have benefited less from that affect. IUPUI seems to just have trouble getting fan support for anything.

Updates on Women's BB average home Attendance, now that the regular season is over:
(Hosted post-season games' attendance will be included in the official numbers, though)
USD 2,109 * highest since 2015-16 (WNIT season) SDSU 2,026 UND 1,706 ORU 1,221 UNO 1,167 (+)
NDSU 768 WIU 638 IPFW 597 Denver 352 (-)
(+) = highest in over ten years
(-) = lowest in over ten years
The Coyote women's regular-season attendance has shown steady growth from 2011-2018, and is now the top of the league (for two years running).... Next on the list, fill the SLT with red....
