I pay little attention to the national FCS scene, is there anyone out there with an edge on Streveler for this award? I have a hard time seeing someone putting up better numbers - especially when weighting the numbers against SOS.

I have a hard time seeing someone putting up better numbers - especially when weighting the numbers against SOS. The problem is there will be some player somewhere who puts up similar numbers against inferior competition. I realize it is all FCS but the MVFC is not like other conferences. The Pioneer, Patriot, MEAC, and some of these other conferences are not on the same level and shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence. Strev is putting these numbers up in the best conference in FCS. Really, there shouldn't be much debate about this award if he keeps this up, but there probably will be because of politics.

Dear Coyote Football Alumni, It was a tough day as your Coyotes dropped their first game of the 2017 season at Illinois State on Saturday 37-21. Illinois State, who was ranked #24 in the country, was home for homecoming after losing two in a row on the road. A big crowd boosted the Redbirds effort and helped get them off to a fast start. After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, we battled back behind the arm of quarterback Chris Streveler, who threw touchdown passes to tight ends Brett Samson and Aaron Ramsey. A late, second quarter, Illinois State field goal gave the Redbirds a 17-14 halftime lead. Our team responded well in the third quarter driving the ball deep into Illinois State territory on back-to- back possessions only to have offensive pass interference penalties end both drives and actually take away what would have been the go-ahead touchdown. Illinois State scored again late in the third quarter but an early fourth quarter touchdown run by freshmen running back Kai Henry got us back to within 6 points at 27-21. After a defensive stop got us the ball back, we mounted another fourth quarter drive that stalled at the Illinois State ten-yard line. Streveler’s fourth down pass was batted down and Illinois State took over on downs. Two plays later they popped an 87-yard run for a touchdown to go up two scores. Our next drive ended again in Illinois State territory after a Streveler interception sealing the outcome. Our team showed a lot of fight during the second half as we battled through penalty calls and missed opportunities. We were forced to throw the football a lot against a strong Illinois State run defense and as a result of us trailing in the fourth quarter. Streveler was 39 of 63 throwing on the day for nearly 450 yards and two touchdowns. He threw his first interception of the year in the first quarter which stopped an early drive. Our guys must rebound this week against a good Southern Illinois football team that is coming off of two straight league wins including their own win vs Illinois State. Southern features one of the league’s top offenses and has excellent skill players. It will big a test for our defense that struggled with the big play last week. While we lost the game Saturday our team has all of its goals in front of it and will play with great effort on Saturday. Hopefully we can fill the Dome as we head into the final stretch of the conference schedule. Thanks again for your support and Fight South Dakota, Bob Nielson Bob Nielson Head Football Coach University of South Dakota (605) 658-5558

Western Illinois really got a bad draw there. Going to E Washington would be their reward for what is currently a good season. I think personally they should be seeded. Their only losses are to USD and NDSU with several good wins including at UNI who is hot right now. I wish they would stop putting the Jacks in USD's bracket. The last thing I would want is back to back games against them especially if the Coyotes win the first one. Their offense is fit for a dome. I wonder why Central Arkansas is rated above the Coyotes unless their only loss is to a FBS team. I have a hard time believing their schedule has been as tough as USD's. IMO USD should be the highest ranked one loss team in the nation and W Illinois the highest 2 loss team.

I think if USD & SDSU both make playoffs we might be attached at the hip for travel purposes, especially if one team is seeded and the other is not.
