Sam Houston State isn't a joke. They are a legit team. I get the fact they don't take a pounding week in and week out, but in a one game winner take all deal, they have some horsepower. I can't speak for the other two.

Just a few opinions on the season so far combined with last year as well. The State of the Nielson speech.
Now that Bob has 20 games under his belt at the University I think his grade is somewhere in the B+ to A- range. Mostly good but a few things to work on.
The good
The Coyotes have a team that is built for speed and built for their dome. With all the other domes and field turfs out there the weather is really the only factor that plays against the Coyotes. What I like about Bob is that he came in and wanted to create a team that goes above and around MVFC defenses and doesn't try to go through them as often. Joe Glenn tried to run through teams with lesser players and that strategy doesn't work in a conference built to stop the run unless a team has a great O-line and running backs.
Bob's offense is going to take a quarterback that is proficient at running the offense. He is very spoiled to get a guy like Streveler to run the system. The quarterback will always be very important if he keeps this same offense. I like that he uses several wide receivers and rotates them in and out. Since they do the most running in a no huddle offense having fresh receivers is kind of a nightmare for DB's. This offense is built to play fast and they have the most success playing that way. I can't wait to see what Reggie Crawford (my first team all MVFC wide out :-) I guess that didn't work out) will do in the offense.
The defense is improved this year and I really like that Nielson subs in defenders (especially lineman) frequently to keep them fresh. If there is one position on the whole team to keep fresh it is that D-Line. The defense won't win games but if the offense is doing it's job it certainly won't lose games.
The team in general will improve as Nielson continues to get his guys getting on the field. Depth is very important for this team to be able to play as Bob would like them to play. The improvements with the front 7 have been great. No longer can a team just lineup and run it right at the center of this D.
Needs Improvement / Other Comments
The biggest improvements to me are just simply keeping with the game plan on offense until it is pretty much mathematically impossible for the other team to come back. This team is meant to attack not to protect. They should always be wanting to increase a lead because when they go into protection mode the offense isn't built to do that. I would advise having a lead chart meaning to figure out how big of a lead is needed with how much time left to go into clock running mode. I would say for every extra possession the lead is at add 3:00 and that is when it would be ok to sit on the ball. For the first two scores of the lead I would only have 2:00 per possession lead. So if the Coyotes lead by 21 I wouldn't go into conservation mode until there are 7:00 left. That doesn't necessarily mean that the Coyotes have to pass on every play until then but also don't run between the tackles on every first and second down.
I personally like Neilson's offense and it is one that will lend to desirability for recruits to want to come to play in it. What he has to keep in mind is that the offense needs to keep in attack mode to be successful and I know I beat that dead horse quite a bit. The first 2 years this teams has developed a tendency to play very freely when the times of a game are the least stressful. When things get tight towards the end the team generally doesn't play as well in those moments. Against UNI the 4th quarter was exactly that way and the team panicked and had trouble holding onto the lead.
One thing about this offense is that the running game works against many teams very well but when they play teams like Illinois State, UNI and NDSU with really good front sevens the running game will be shut down more often then not. I am going to try to keep a tally for the Coyotes this week how many times they get a first down or not when they pass on first down vs run. I think against a team like NDSU I believe that Yotes should be passing about 75% of the time. I am a believer in the screen and short passing game being just as effective of a ball control mechanism as running between the tackles. When I tally this week I am not going to count any runs that are not direct hand offs to a running back. If Streveler decides to run on a run/pass option I think that is a completely different type of run then a between the tackles running back attempt. The defense normally has the timing down of a regular running play but they don't when the QB runs it. I believe that I want most plays running through our quarterback so our best player in deciding what happens in a play more often than not.
For every ill that was created when losing in Normal and in Cedar Falls can all be turned around this week with a win in Fargo. If the Coyotes play how they can play they can win in Fargo. The problem is the Bison and the Fargo dome rarely allow that to happen.

Streveler named MVFC Offensive Player of the Year! Congrats Chris! Beyond being the best qb in program history, I would rate him as the toughest player I have ever watched in person. It was a joy to have the opportunity to watch Chris represent the University of South Dakota every game. I am sure he has a bright future in football and beyond. We will see some of his very best during the playoffs.

Perfect example of who this guy is and the type of social media loud mouth Stig likes to hire. For comparisons sake - any tweets like this from the NDSU FB staff? Not going to happen. Stig obviously condones his coaches behavior, or we wouldn’t see it. Talented team, but this is an example of why I would bet the farm, SDSU won’t win the championship this year. More than enough talent to do so, but won’t do it.

He only is set to have the most yards in conference history despite 3 or 4 games less played than the current record holder....
Just zero class up there.
