It's downright embarrassing that we are associated with Youngstown State and Bo Pelini. We might be tied to him for a while too, I have to wonder if anyone else would employ him after this (coupled with his Nebraska experience). I hope that whichever Pelini cutout I paid for last time they visited is still around the Dome somewhere. He essentially thumbed his nose at the YSU admin (albeit it was Jim Tressel -- they run in packs and look after one another)... Can you afford to keep an insubordinate coach around... especially if the boosters are squawking?

Nice to see that they're concerned that Richmond can move on with his life. I wonder if the girl has been able to move on with hers. Just hope he never kneels for the anthem because he could really get in some hot water then.

My hope is there is ZERO focus on this young man. I personally think it's wrong for him to play ( I have 2 daughters ) but it's not our decision. I don't want it to be a distraction.

Bo Pellini and Youngstown State are a freaking disgrace. This guy should have never been recruited to begin with.

Brass, Fair enough. We are in unchartered waters for our program and as I've said all along, every game we play we are capable of winning and capable of losing. I think aldewitt's point are the steps that have been taking in laying the foundation to be where we find ourselves today. For USD, the fact that a game of this magnitude is being played with us in it is a source of pride that hasn't been felt in a very long time. You're correct, 4 games into a season doesn't give us, or you, or anyone the right to puff put our chest and declare us as national contenders. Even if we have success, that has to be parlayed into success in years to come for us to be in talk of "ruling" the league. We are light years from that. In fairness, I also feel he gave YSU the respect it deserves in terms of wins and losses and contending for both conference and national titles. That's why he said it's a statement game. Since 1986, USD has not been on the national stage like it is now. I have the utmost respect for your teams potential. They are chucked with great athletes. What I don't have respect for is your coach. My opinion, and it's only my opinion, is that Coach Nielson is doing this the correct way and Coach Pelini is not. Long term success comes from a solid foundation, short term success can be ascertained in a number of ways, many of which we wouldn't like or accept in Vermillion. All that being said, it is fun to be in the conversation for contention, and a hell of a lot more fun to be one of two teams in such a big game this weekend. I have no idea if we can hold up against the size and physicality of YSU, but I know one thing for certain...our young team will play their asses off in an attempt to validate any discussion about titles of which USD is in the conversation. In closing, you're right....let's talk after Saturday. "Fans can get a little over zealous with instant success." True There is an interesting story out there regarding Bo's position on Mi'lik Richmond. It is a partial transcript of his press conference following the YSU SDSU game available on the YSU sports website. I suggest anyone read it before making uninformed decisions on his aproach to doing things right. I am proud of our coach. Yes, he can be as ass when excited, but he cares about the players. Not for their play, but about their growth and development. I don't know Neilson at all, but IMO, he should aspire to grow the program to what Pelini has done.

Uninformed decisions...you're kidding...right? The day our program "grows" to be the program that Pelini has built is the day I pull my support. The only thing you forgot in your love song to Bo was Youngstown fan's position that the girl was drunk so she must have been asking for it. Don't hold him up to be some paragon of virtue.

Well, we've already established there is no lack of farmers or farm equipment dealers in SD. Unfortunately you seem to be coming up short in Christians. No forgiveness in your hearts, as I read it. Every sentence is a life sentence. What would you do with this kid, tell him society does NOT thing he has servered his time and why don't you go steal and sell drugs to survive. That God we have guys like Bo and Tressel at YSU! Good luck tomorrow.

Tressel was no saint either during his career. There is a separate thread if you want to talk about rapists.

That God we have guys like Bo and Tressel at YSU! Good luck tomorrow. Nobody is saying he should be imprisoned for life or should not be allowed to go to school or make a better life for himself. What we are saying is that by playing Varsity athletics at a D1 university the athletes are held to a higher standard in every way, and that includes moral standards. It is a privilege, not a right, and this player forfeited his right to this honor when he participated in a gang rape of an unconscious girl and them urinated on her. Your scumbag coach is a freaking scumbag, I cannot overstate that point. You can talk about how he cares for his players and wants to build them into fine young men, the problem is if this player did not have special athletic abilities Bo couldn't give two sh!ts about what happened to him. He sought out and recruited a convicted rapist to represent YSU, that's all I need to know about Bo. I would be appalled if that happened at USD and wouldn't support any coach who does that. What would I tell the player? I'd tell him that there are some things that you do in life that you pay a heavy price for, a sentence beyond what the legal system imposes on you. Sorry, but playing D1 football is one of those prices. The best part is that this player is never going to play in the NFL. That league will not touch him with a 10 foot pole. So what's the point of even pursuing football?
