I am hearing rumblings that St. Thomas has a request before the NCAA to receive a hardship waiver, after they were expelled from their conference, to move directly to Division 1. Anybody else heard this?

That has been the rumor for some time. Not surprised.

Wasn't there some speculation on here that St Thomas encouraged their conference to kick them out so that they could have a case for a hardship waiver?

I probably should have framed the question differently. I am hear new rumblings to this effect. My perception of the prior commentary on here was that it was more speculative. My apologies if I am mistaken.

I actually heard it last week from the parents of a current St. Thomas athlete, with a second student athlete who recently committed to them for next year. They said it is all over campus that they want to jump straight to D1.

Wow, nice find, Eddie! Big news, but it comes with the caveat that the NCAA still hasn't ruled on their waiver. I'm sure having the Summit invite helps their case.

I think they'll be a solid addition to the conference.
Wonder if this affects Augie's timetable at all, but I doubt it. Sounds like they still hope to get their invite in 2021.

I see tons of advantage in having Coyote teams play in the recruiting hotbeds of Minneapolis and Kansas City. Great for the League to have a presence in those media markets, as well.

I really like the long term potential of this addition. It could help the league immensely in creating buzz and helps spread the coyote brand to the twin cities. If i were a Denver fan I’d be drooling at this addition, with both schools private and in large metros there could be a nice potential rivalry for them here. But I do have a feeling Augie will be coming soon too, Douple knows that there is some hesitation with them, but also knows he has to stabilize the league further. So this may be a way to appease some schools. I still for one am not convinced Augie can make the leap, but with this news I’m really un bothered by if they do or not.

This really is exciting news. I don't really care about Augie one way or another, but I was hoping to see St. Thomas added. I think they'll bring a lot to the table.

Dear (My Wife),
Four months ago, it was announced that St. Thomas would be involuntarily removed from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), which we have called home for nearly 100 years. Since then, we have thoughtfully considered several options for the future. Over the summer, Vice President and Director of Athletics Phil Esten, Ph.D., led an advisory committee to methodically examine several options for a new conference home. The top priority in this process is maintaining our student-centered focus. We are proud of our strong record of athletic performance and even prouder that our student-athletes are recognized for their great work as scholars in the classroom and as good citizens in our community. Those values will remain paramount no matter which athletics conference we ultimately join. I am pleased to update you that late yesterday, following a decision by our Board of Trustees to submit an application, St. Thomas officially received an invitation to join the Summit League, a Division I athletics conference. Our membership in the Summit League will require an approval from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). We have submitted a request for a waiver to the NCAA from their current rules, which state that Division III schools can only reclassify to Division II. Our waiver seeks an exception to this rule and requests permission to enter the NCAA Division I reclassification process directly from Division III. Joining the Summit League would be a unique and exciting opportunity for St. Thomas, allowing us to significantly expand our impact and reach. It is a strong Midwest Division I conference that includes both public and private competitors. Under the direction of Commissioner Tom Douple, the conference has grown in strength and success over the past several years. If the NCAA ultimately grants the waiver request, St. Thomas will begin competing in the Summit League in fall 2021, after two full final years in the MIAC. Answers to some questions about this update can be found here. As more information about the process becomes available, we will share it with our alumni, benefactors and other key stakeholders. Regardless of the outcome, I want to assure you that our core university mission and convictions will continue to guide us through the transition process.
Our Tommie Network of over 115,000 alumni and more than 10,000 generous benefactors positions us with great strength to pursue this opportunity. The future is bright, and I am grateful to have so many loyal Tommies and friends of St. Thomas supporting us on this journey. Sincerely,
Julie H. Sullivan, Ph.D. President
