I don't think there is ever a bad time to talk about expansion. As much as adding UMKC wants to make me throw up a little I have an idea that seems realistic and not ridiculous.
I think the Summit League should try to get to 12 programs and 9 for football to be a self sufficient conference which should be the goal. This isn't necessarily my first choice but a realistic idea. I have added in UNC and UMKC.
Summit schools including football
UND NDSU SDSU USD WIU UNC
Summit schools without football (one would need to add football to make it work)
UMKC Denver Omaha Oral Roberts
That leaves 2 schools that would need to be added that sponsor football. To keep travel partners in tact either the two football schools would come in together and be travel partners for basketball or for those two football schools be able to be travel partners with ORU or WIU.
Ideally Montana and Montana State would round that out nicely. Otherwise UNI could come in and be travel partners with WIU and another school in the proximity of Oral Roberts such as Arkansas Little Rock or even a school like NW Missouri State if they would move up. UNI doesn't think the should be in the Summit but the league would easily rival the MVFC and/or MVC.
These are the scenarios that Douple and the school presidents need to be talking about. They need to be sending out feelers. It's eat or be eaten and so far Douple seems to prefer the eaten angle.

A conference only needs 6 teams to sponsor FCS football. The Big South is an example, The Patriot and Northeast each have 7.

why would the summit want a 6 team football conference? Why the hell not? He's just saying that you don't have to have 8 to be viable. Your goal was to have an all-sports conference. Technically you can do that with 6 teams. Obviously, having more than the requirement gives more stability. Like when/if Fort Wayne leaves we immediately have a baseball problem (5 teams), which means we have a BB auto-bid problem. I like the idea of having the Summit sponsor FB. At least threatening to do that. It would probably be the only way to make UNI and the other Valley teams realize the value of the Dakota schools to the MVFC, and make them willing to negotiate. Look at the FCS playoffs. All 4 of the Summit teams are 4 out of the 5 in the playoff! At least this season, Summit FB>>>> Missouri Valley FB. Imagine pulling UNI and ISUr into the Summit. That would be wild.

I too am intrigued by having the Summit League sponsor football. What is stopping the Summit League from just taking over the MVFC administratively. Just change the name of the MVFC to Summit League Football. This would give the Summit League another core sport and would help with being compliant to keep the auto bid for men's basketball. Maybe I am missing something and this is not possible. I suppose the non-football teams of the Summit would object to taking on this extra expense.

Once UND joins we will have 5 Summit/MVFC teams. Add one more and we would have a great deal more leverage in negotiations with the Valley, which only has 5 MVC/MVFC teams, and mostly bad ones.

I'm watching NDSU vs. Missouri St. (MBB), and notice Missouri St. has 4 games this year against SL teams. Wouldn't they be a good fit for the SL? Especially if UMKC is coming over?

BTW - NDSU looks bad. They are hanging with the Bears (and beat them earlier in the year), but I don't know how. They look awful.

They would be a good fit but by themselves I would seriously doubt they would come over. The Valley teams look at the Summit as a significant downgrade. Missouri State would be a potential conference member but only if there was some type of merger of the leagues or if the MVFC just decides to be a full fledged conference allowing the MVC basketball only members to fend for themselves. I believe that type of conference would be a premier conference in all sports.

The MVC schools are cashing in on the shares of NCAA tournament money that Creighton and Wichita State earned for the conference with their deep tourney runs, it will be interesting in future, when the money runs out, if there will be any talk of movement. I would still love to see an all sports conference with the MVFC schools.

I've been an advocate of New Mexico State joining the Summit. Tonight they beat previously undefeated #6 Miami 63-54 to move to 11-2 on the year (losses to good St. Mary's and San Diego teams). This is a team that would really raise the profile of the Summit. They aren't a great geographical fit, but I think that at some point a flight is a flight and they'd fit if Denver does. The WAC is going to meet its inevitable demise and I would like to see the Summit take NMSU before the Big Sky does.

Get them and Northern Colorado to both join. The Summit should get to a strong 12 team conference IMO. I agree that quality of school is more important than geography within reason. There are no good candidates within the close foot print but the Aggies would strengthen the leagues profile.
