I think salary is the main driving point in this discussion. The new coach at Colorado State received a 5 year contract at a base of $700k with $25k annual raises. Big family, big expenses. If he does take the job, if offered, it will be unfortunate but it will be next man up. It would be difficult to turn down an opportunity like that, that is a ton of security. I don't think that Smith will get that much, but he will undoubtedly double his salary. I can not blame him for making that decision.

He'll never make the tournament at USU if that happens. The MWC is going to be a career dead-end for coaches.

Thoughts on any of the assistants?
Can any of them take us to the next level or are we better off looking external?
Guess is craig will take all of them if none of them stay. Which is fine.

I don’t disagree. My honest guess is just that he has a long term plan and expected to be on to the “next level” after 3-5 years. In other words, I wonder if he much cared where he was at. 95% of coaches in today's environment will always be looking to move up. Every mid-major or lower P5 coach would move up to coach Duke/UNC ect if given the chance. Look at CFB, Jimbo Fischer left FSU for Texas A&M which I would consider a lesser job, but money talks. Who knows, this may be another negotiation tactic for Smith, but I am not going to worry much either way. Herbster has known that Smith has been shopping, and I am sure if he leaves Herbie has quality candidates in line. To quote a fan from the USU board, this is how I am starting to feel about coaches: "I would feel for these fans losing a coach. But then I remembered how it made me feel and that is why i literally stopped caring about any coach. It's awesome if we get a coach in here that does good. But I no longer think for a second they stay long if they do. Nor do I lose any sleep over it" Agreed. Otz will be gone soon too. I’m surprised we haven’t heard if he’s leaving or not.

As a mid-major if you aren’t cycling through coaches every 3 to 6 years than you probably aren’t have the type of success you want. Look at a Murray State as an example.

TBH, I'm really unemotional about this - back in August (or just generally after last year) didn't we all expect him to move on after this season? MWC is an enormous step up from SL (I will grant that USU in particular isn't very sought after unless you live there - wherever 'there' is).
Am I the only one who is kind of excited about what is next? Smith took on a re-build at USD and was successful - we aren't a re-build anymore. Let's thank him for that, and be happy that both sides got what they wanted out of this relationship. Using Otz as an example, he likely didn't get the USD job because he didn't have that kind of skillset. There is a different skillset that can come in now. Could be a recruiting wizard, X&O guy, etc.
I'm pumped to see who Herbster - who isn't surprised by this - has on his short list. Let's get the "who should we hire" thread rolling.

OK can we hire Jay Wright already. I am sure Denny could open up his wallet one more time to give USD one last gift. Ha Ha.

Lets get the inevitable over with while we have a strong team to help with the coaching transition much like SDSU did with Otz.

Utah State fan here,
I apologize for some of my fellow Aggie fans who have been saying ignorant things about your program and University, I guarantee most of them have never visited Vermillion and don't know anything about USD. Every fanbase has the vocal few who make the majority look bad. Disregard them.
While I do understand the frustration of a coach leaving all too well, and I can certainly empathize with you all on that one, I don't think many are being fair to Coach Smith and the opportunity he can have at Utah State.
The Summit League has been a one-bid league since 1991, and in the past 20 years has only had two teams ever make it out of the first round of the tournament. While the Mountain West has admittedly been a bit down the past couple of years, it is just a few years removed from being a typical 3-5 bid league. This season it had two bids, and with the almost certain inclusion of Gonzaga next season, it had two of the Sweet 16 teams in this year's tournament. I don't say this to mock the Summit League, just to show one major, major difference between the programs.
Utah State, like the Mountain West, has been down the past few years. However, the coach prior to Duryea (who was just fired after making the conference tournament semi-finals) led the Aggies to 17 consecutive winning seasons and an overall record of 402-156. Duryea was a big let down for Aggie fans, who feel that they should be far above the .500 mark every season. There's a winning tradition, and a ton of basketball history at Utah State.
Logan is a gorgeous college town tucked away in the mountains, and while it's not the easiest place to recruit to, it's a difficult place to leave. There's a lot to like about a winning program with massive support from the community.
The two best players on USU's team (far and away) were both sophomores this season. The team only loses two players, and they're not very big losses. Smith could come in and have immediate success quite easily if he's half the coach many of you seem to believe he is. Logan, like Vermillion, is the final destination for very few coaches. It's a stepping stone. If he's looking for a way to break into leading a major program, Utah State is a very good situation for him.
Again, I have a lot of respect for the South Dakota program, and I hope that if Smith does decide to stay put that he will lead you to multiple tournaments and have lots of success. However, I understand how college basketball works and coaches are always trying to make the next step. I really don't think that it's disrespecting USD to say that Utah State is an understandable next step.

Similarly, please ignore those on our board who would try to say USU isn't a better job than USD. I think most - hurt feelings aside - recognize the level of resources and multi-bid opportunities are drastically higher, and RPI's will jump when Gonzaga joins.

Just saw on the Aggie board it’s a done deal. Congrats to craig. Time to start a speculation thread.
