Sounds like this thing is a done deal and the players are having a meeting tonight. Good for Craig. Very thankful for everything he has done.

There was an immediate payoff from sacrificing that season, the team won the Summit League the following season. Didn't exactly fall off a cliff afterwards either. I must have missed our first ever NCAA tournament appearance. Oh yeah, that hasn't happened. No payoff. Like it or not, success in D1 basketball is defined by the NCAA Tournament and he hasn't gotten us there. I have no idea why schools are after our guy when the guy in Brookings has been to two straight tournaments. It stinks that we have to look for a new coach, but your take is completely irrational. Finishing 1st and 2nd was a hell of a lot better than where we were before and a direct result of taking on transfers.

Last time around Herbster had a priority of having someone with prior head coaching experience. I'm curious to see if he has changed his tune.

Aggie fan here. As mentioned by another Aggie fan, our base is not one that puts down others fans or universities. Every message board has a few bad apples that requires an apology to other fans from time to time. At USU, our last coach was fired for not producing. Prior to him we’ve had a long history of BB support with good teams. Stew Morrill our immediate past coach before Coach Duryea left Colorado State, turned down BYU and came to USU based upon fan and institutional support. We expect to beat Utah, BYU, Nevada, New Mexico year in and year out and not if we get lucky. The Facebook link is from a game between USU and Nevada at USU’s Smith Spectrum in Logan. I think it shows the type of support Coach Smith can expect in Logan. Here is the link if I didn’t get the video right. m.youtube.com/watch?v=ARpzavb7PQk Best to you all in your search!

This go around I don’t think that’s as important since we are no longer in a rebuild. I hope whoever we get can increase talent level and bring in some very strong players. I would love to beat the jacks in a race for the first tournament win!!

All that matters is making the bracket and being in the field of 64. Everything else is just something to do during the cold winter while we wait for football season. I'm serious. SDSU has like 7 trips to the Dance and we have ZERO. And now we get to hit the reset button. How many more years will it be now?

I imagine that we can expect to have Coach Smith for about four years. I don’t expect a lot next year as he won’t have recruiting up and going. We do have some very good players returning next year but we have specific needs that Coach Smith will have to fix. With Gonzaga (maybe), Nevada, San Diego State and New Mexico I don’t expect an immediate turn around. However, I imagine he will have us back where we want to be in four years and then the big boys will come calling, which as one of you mentioned is the plight of a mid-major schools like USU and USD.
