And the Dakota schools that do want nothing to do with it. NDSU folks are already saying if Augie comes in it's FBS or bust. Can you post a link where the NDSU administration says they are going FBS for football if Augustana joins the Summit League? I’d be interested in seeing that... I'm sure it's message board chatter. If there was an all sports FBS conference that would have them then they probably would have left by now.

Need to keep the donors in Teammakers happy.

kwsn.com/podcasts/sports-talk-with-kwsn/5093/mick-garry-on-twins-slide-unwritten-rules-augie-and-mankato-someday-in-summit/Mick Garry on KWSN yesterday was asked a similar question: John Gaskins: In the all-sports standings of the NSIC this year, Augustana finished second. They've either been first or second every year they have been in the NSIC. Mankato was first in all-sports this year.
Zimmer told us yesterday that he has a good feeling Augie will be going D-I, and that athletic directors will vote them in. He also thinks that between Mankato and St. Cloud, Mankato is a much more likely school to go because of their athletic success, and because they aren't quite as financially strapped as St. Cloud....
Do you agree with that? Because right now it's apparent that Mankato and Augie are the best-performing teams in all sports in the NSIC. They'd be ready to go D-I.Mick: Mankato (Minnesota State) has insight into the division-1 thing because they have D-I Hockey. Sometimes that can, I think, motivate you to say "I think we can go D-I in everything". Or maybe they will say "we have our one D-I sport, and right now that's all we can handle". There is a decent enrollment there. I don't know how big a factor that is. Its not like they are drawing (fans) crazy well in their sports. I think the other thing, though is with the regents in Minnesota, and the hoops you have to jump through, the legislative and political hoops, would be a little more complicated than it is in South Dakota for a private school. But, overall: Why not? That would be another step towards something that closely resembles the old NCC, and there would be that familiarity factor. Which is something that I think both USD and SDSU struggled with initially, and are probably still struggling with a little bit at times, among their older fans. It would be another step in the right direction, and it would be the midwest again. There would be two more schools where a lot of us could drive to these games. And the familiarity with the rivalries, personalities, all that stuff would be better than it is now. I think that that is a huge factor in sustaining this. In making sure that it gets better, that familiarity factor.

He sure sounds like he's all in for Augie to go D1.

They pretty much need Sanford to personally bankroll this whole thing, right? Their budget and alumni base is tiny. I can't imagine they could generate enough revenue from the local businesses to fund the move. Is the Summit even open to inviting them?
I think they're just blowing smoke to generate free publicity.

Like a Notre Dame or Creighton? ?? Yeah, that statement stood out to me as well. I think that if you had heard him say it rather than reading it, his emphasis may have given a different meaning. If he said it like ND and CU are the two options, with one at each end of the spectrum, that makes no sense whatsoever. Both of those schools are much to large and prominent to be a good example. If that is his vision, his is seriously delusional. I tend to think he was using both of them as an example of the "ultimate" or extreme example. He should have used Valparaiso as a more relevant model. Or even Oral Roberts. Both are very small privates that have had some D-1 basketball success, and have grown in both size and stature. Even those examples might be a stretch. I'm in the camp that Augie and the Summit would both benefit from associating with each other, but Notre Dame as a model? Holy Delusions, Batman!

Might be as simple as using ND and Creighton as examples everyone knows. Had he used Oral Roberts or Valpo some people may have lost the reference.

Regardless of where you stand on this augie deal, it just comes down to money. If the Sanford regime wants it, then it will happen. Money talks, bullshit walks.

Zimmer is on KWSN right now he is reporting that recruits are being told by coaches Augie will make the move to DI.

I still wonder if ORU, WIU, and Fort Wayne are willing to commit to more trips to the Dakotas.
