First half analysis:
OL - much improved. Building on last weeks success. QB - Simmons a bit inconsistent. Needs to throw to check offs when primary routes are covered. Defense - front 7 good. Secondary needs to clean up coverage.
Overall - this should be at least 14-3 if not 21-3. Keep up defensive pressure and hold on the the $&@;: football on offense.

It’s sad when we say our O line has been better and we still can’t run it.

Well. Anyone else need proof that this is a playoff team that squandered the season? Great win for the Yotes today. Let's get one more and really get me excited for next season.

Great overall game on D especially on Senior Day holding them to 22 yds rushing and not much over 200 passing and their SR QB had over 400 last week! Great also to have Case back both as a returner and receiver! Lot of very good individual play by Greenfield, Henry, Frederick, Simmons (including some critical nifty runs) just to name a few. It appeared that the Yotes played with a lot more passion over the course of the whole game! Great gut check game!!!

So how have dome renovations come along? Sky lodges and such, increased seating capacity, to what 12,000? Western has something in the works that shall be revealed next semester from what I have been told. So I was still curious what is happening with the Dakota Dome. I'm kinda into structural engineering and how to make old look fresh and new.

Western has something in the works that shall be revealed next semester from what I have been told. So I was still curious what is happening with the Dakota Dome. I'm kinda into structural engineering and how to make old look fresh and new. There are some nice renderings and a discussion in our “facilities” section on this board. Go to the “details on facilities improvements” thread, page 33. I’d just link it for you, but I’m not good at that from my phone... The dome was built in the late 70’s to house basically all of our indoor sports, as was the trend at that time (think metrodome in Minneapolis). For a D-2 program in a low population (and cold) state, the dome really has functioned well for us. Multi-use facilities save money, but you sacrifice form over function. So we have slowly but surely been moving the multiple sports crammed into the dome out into their own purpose-built facilities. We now have a more appropriately sized basketball and volleyball arena, weight room and sports science center in the SCSC. The west bleachers and former weights/volleyball area can now be built into permanent seating to parallel the east grandstand, and add lots of football facilities under them. (Field level). The football offices and meeting rooms will be on level 3 above the concourse, with some west-facing windows punched through the wall. The final phase will be to move the swimming and diving out from under the east grandstand into their own facilities attached to the wellness center east of the dome. Then all the space under the east side can be repurposed and updated into more spacious and modern offices/locker rooms/ concourse/ bathrooms, etc. maybe something cool like a sports hall of fame, trophy room, etc. who knows?

Some observations from yesterday.
-Offense is much more willing to run Simmons on designed plays now. Assume they didn’t earlier to avoid injury as well as hoping they could establish a ground game with RB.
-Case is a game changer. He helps in punt return as he does a good job picking up 5-10 yards and helping field position. Also liked how he cut up field rather than toward sideline on a catch on last drive. That helped keep clock moving when WIU was out of timeouts.
-Defense played well, but was aided by several drops by WIU.
-We must have gotten the F crew of MVFC today. Some very strange calls and even more weird calls by replay booth. INT in end zone hit ground. Still not sure about that targeting. Jay Elsen and Andre Fields were struggling to agree with the booth review decisons.

Jay Elsen and Andre Fields were struggling to agree with the booth review decisons. Simmons has proven himself to be a dynamic runner the past few games which begs the question: why wasn't this utilized more earlier in the season? I knew he was a standout, but I was amazed just how much Case added to the equation. He's a game changer and, on the bright side, this will be considered a redshirt year. Necks might have dropped some, but overall I wasn't impressed with their receivers and any time a defense holds anyone to 21 yards rushing they did more than play well. That was supposedly one of the better offenses in the MVFC and the defense held them out of the end zone. I give that a 5 star rating. In this conference any win is a good win, especially this season. Everyone has done a very nice job of cannibalizing one another. Five reviewed calls during the game and all five went against us. That targeting was crap. Initial contact was shoulder to the chest.

I think Simmons wasn’t running early in the year because they probably thought the OL could let the RB’s tote the ball and maybe didn’t want Simmons doing one read then bolting.

Overall, gritty performance by the team. Simmons had another solid game. Henry ran the ball hard. The D showed up and did a tremendous job stopping the run. Not allowing Western Illinois into the endzone is quite an accomplishment. The O should have had more points on the board, but did a nice job of getting a couple critical first downs at the end of the game to run out the clock. The blocked put was a huge disappointment as the O-lineman at the 2nd level barely made contact with the guy that made the block. Number 50 for WI is obviously talented, but we made him look like superman on Saturday. I liked the strategy of running speed option at him in the 4th quarter to effectively neutralize him. All-in-all, great win and will provide some confidence heading into the final game of the year.
