Did beating Oklahoma next Fall just become more difficult...?

Sigh, and I was really looking forward to OU being down next season said nobody, ever. Guess it will be fun to watch him, but maybe not.

I’m surprised no one is talking about the Iowa State transfer QB that we have picked up. He is a 6’4 dual threat type QB. He likes to run! Is this topic the elephant in the room? This spring and summer QB competition is going to be an intense battle. How do you all feel about it. Devin is a redshirt Sophomore this coming fall.

Competition is always good! Not really in favor of using a two qb system but in certain situations it can work. Certainly did with Winnepeg and Strev.

It certainly upgrades the depth and talent in the quarterback room and should solidify the position for the next three years. Competition and depth is a great thing to have. I was really happy when he signed here and hope to see great things from him in the future. Moore definitely passes the eyeball test. I think now the entire offensive arsenal will be able to be utilized without fear which I didn't think was always the case last season.

If nothing else I think it means that we are more likely to see Simmons running the ball early in the season if they believe they have a competent backup in case of injury. We didn’t see much running from Simmons until late in 2018.

There was a lot of folks convinced he would be the back up or moved to WR. I said then what I will say now, this staff, like any good staff, will bring in athletes to compete for playing time and the player that gives them the best chance to win will play period. They are not afraid to let a freshman or transfer play even if that means sitting a previous starter or senior. This is true with most quality programs, see the reason why we will now face Jalen Hurts at QB for Oklahoma as evidence. If you want to win and sustain success, you need to be willing to build competition in your program and accept the changes when the occur. Let the competition begin and may the best QB win and lead us back to the playoffs and beyond!

That is entirely plausible.

sportschic raised a great question about the lack of talk about the QB transfer.
I have to admit, I was concerned about how the team was going to improve in other position areas (DL/LB and now suddenly, OL) that I haven't really given a lot of thought to the potential impact a talent like Devon could bring. It is going to be a lot of fun to see him play and contribute to Coyote success, plus 3 years of eligibility, could be big!

It's easy to be intrigued, but hard to get excited about Devon Moore. We have no idea what we have in him. He tore his ACL one week into practice his first year at Iowa State, then didn't even see the field his second year. He was highly touted out of high school. He was the first commit to Matt Campbell and sounds like he had a great chance to be "the guy", but found himself as the 4th string (or worse) QB this season.
Streveler had actually played QB at Minnesota, and was even athletic enough to see the field at other positions. These same like very different situations.

If for nothing else it will Austin and Tyler work harder and the competition begins. I do not think that Coach Nielson will use two QB’s as part of the gameplan. You know the ol adage “ You show me two QB’s, I will show ya none”!

I think Moore will give Simmons a run for his money. But, like others have said, it’s nice to be deep at QB, regardless of the starter. Offensively, we’re going to live and die by our ability to protect the quarterback and establish a running game.
Defensively - I have no idea what to think. This new DC seems like a very creative technician.

I think we're going to need his creativity and look forward to watching how he plays the chess game against Valley offenses.

Dear Coyote Football Alumni,
Hope you had a great holiday break as it’s been back to full speed for our coaching staff. We will be out recruiting over the next two weeks prior to the second signing date on February 6th. We expect to sign another small group of student-athletes that will complete our 2019 class.
Over 85 returning players have started winter workouts with an emphasis on position specific training. Coach Clete McLeod and his strength staff are doing a great job of working with our team and focusing on the individual development of each player. The focus, energy, and enthusiasm have been outstanding. Our motto for the off-season is “No Excuses, WE WILL WIN” with the emphasis on doing what it takes for us to win a championship.
I am pleased to announce that we have hired Travis Johansen as our new defensive coordinator. Coach Johansen comes to us from Grand View University in Iowa where he has been the defensive coordinator since 2013. He was the defensive coordinator at Concordia University, St. Paul prior to Grand View. Coach Johansen brings an innovative defensive approach to our program and was recently featured in a Sport Illustrated future edition for his unique defensive thinking and schemes. His Grand View defenses have been nationally ranked in multiple categories every year and he has been a part of multiple national playoff berths and a national championship.
Finally, the beginning of the dome renovation process is upon us as all nonattached items are currently being moved from inside the Dome to allow for demolition and construction starting next month. Check out the following for Dome Renovation Updates.
It is truly an exciting time for Coyote Football and I hope you are making plans to join us for the 2019 home opener vs Montana on August 31st. Thanks again for your continued support.
Go Yotes and Fight South Dakota,
Bob Nielson
Head Football Coach
University of South Dakota

Wasn’t expecting this. One semester and out. Makes you wonder if the recruitment process went wrong, or Moore coming in scares him off, homesick, or what the heck happened.
