Series History
South Dakota leads the series with Houston Baptist 5-2 and have won the last three meetings; the Coyotes swept the regular-season series in 2010-11. South Dakota rolled in the first meeting, 62-33 on Jan. 27, thanks to 14 points and 11 rebounds from junior forward Amber Hegge. In the second meeting on March 5 in Houston, South Dakota got career-highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Coyotes to a 66-48 win. Wednesday’s game will be the second time the two teams have met on a neutral floor, as they also did so in the Spring Thaw tournament in 2009.
Scouting South Dakota
South Dakota enters the Great West Conference Championship on a roll, having won six straight games, including the 66-48 win over Houston Baptist on March 5. Stacia Robertson’s 20 points and 14 rebounds, both career highs, paced the Coyotes.

Depending on D
South Dakota’s defense remains a constant in 2010-11 and is amongst the best in the nation. Overall, the Coyotes are the No. 1-ranked scoring defense -- by more than five points per game -- in the Great West Conference at 54.6 points per game. Teams are shooting only 34.5 percent from the field against USD, a mark that is also tops in the Great West Conference and ranked 10th in all of Division I.
At home, the Coyotes have particularly stingy on defense, allowing 48.0 points per game. South Dakota has allowed 47 points or less in nine of its 13 home games. South Dakota surrendered a season-low 28 points in the win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Teams are only shooting 32 percent against the Coyotes at the DakotaDome this season.
It’s Good to Share
South Dakota is spreading the ball around on offense this season, as its 14.0 assists per game would indicate. That would be an improvement of more than one full assist per game from 2009-10. Three Coyotes have 55 assists or more -- Alexis Yackley (97), Amber Hegge (79) and Annie Roche (64). In addition, senior point guard Teresa Case has 41 assists off the bench compared to just 19 turnovers. Yackley set a career-high with nine assists in the Coyotes’ 72-28 win over NJIT.
Robertson’s Rise
Freshman post Stacia Robertson has emerged as one of the top offensive post threats in the Great West Conference. That was evident with her 20-point, 14-rebound effort in the win over Houston Baptist on March 5. In the Coyotes’ last eight games, Robertson has averaged 11 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while shooting 63.2 percent from the field. She’s also had the first two double-doubles of her career during that stretch, where the Coyotes are 7-1.
Climbing the Charts
Junior forward Amber Hegge is at 1,113 points, which is 17th all-time, and also at 553 rebounds.
Junior guard Annie Roche is at 233 assists for her career and is only 33 away from 10th place all-time. Roche also has hit 116 three-pointers and is just 16 away from 10th-place Maggie Youngberg, a graduate assistant on the Coyote staff. Roche is also at 832 points for her career.
Junior center Jodie Boss is the single-season record holder with 96 blocks, a mark that is fourth all-time in career blocks and just five out of fifth place.
Last Time Out: Coyote Get Past Houston Baptist
Freshman forward Stacia Robertson had the best game of her career with career-highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the South Dakota women’s basketball team to a 66-48 win over Houston Baptist in Great West Conference action on March 4 in Houston, Texas.
Robertson recorded her second double-double of the season and finished 8-of-13 from the field in the game.
The Coyotes’ three post players, led by Robertson’s 20, combined for 45 points in the game. Junior forward Amber Hegge added 13 points, six rebounds and four assists, while junior center Jodie Boss added 12 points, three blocks and three steals.
Sophomore guard Alexis Yackley added five points and five assists. The Coyotes (19-10, 10-2 GWC) shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field, compared to 34 percent (18-of-53) for Houston Baptist. The Coyotes had a 42-30 edge in rebounds in the contest.
