I will be surprised if the freshman Maddie Krull isn't starting next year. Excellent defender and a pass-first scorer. ... if she’s starting next year she’ll have leapfrogged a whole bunch of kids with actual college experience. I’m not saying it won’t happen but she’s going to have to be really special at 5-9 to immediately take one of the spots being vacated from the starting lineup over the kids already in the program. I was curious, so I looked back at starts and minutes from freshmen over the last eight years (Coach P and Coach AW). You're right about having to be special. The only Freshmen who have started in that time were Seekamp in Williams's first year, and Duffy in Coach P's first year. Not only were those players pretty special, a first year coach will sometimes play freshmen more readily, since they might be running different systems than the previous coach. Unless there is a serious hole in the roster at PG, I'd probably bet more on Krull having a season like McKeever's freshman year. No starts, but lots of minutes off the bench. I think she won "6th woman" that year. Freshmen with the most minutes: year | player | minutes | starts | 2013 | N. Seekamp* | 29.5 | 35 | 2013 | M. McCloud | 18.1 | 0 | 2014 | B. Arens | 13.9 | 0 | 2015 | K. Liveringhouse | 13.7 | 0 | 2016 | J. Bradley | 11.3 | 0 | 2017 | C. Duffy | 31.1 | 32 | 2017 | M. McKeever | 27.1 | 0 | 2018 | M. Arens | 11.0 | 0 | 2019 | R. Sankey | 4.5 | 0 | 2020 | J. Ugofsky** | 9.0** | 0

*technically Seekamp was considered a Sophomore in her first year, but that was only due to NCAA elligibility rules. She played at USD for four seasons after petitioning the NCAA. **The 2020 season isn't over yet

And Seekamp wasn’t a true freshman if I remember correctly. She was 20 years old and had a bunch of international experience when she first stepped on the floor for the Yotes. Like I said, I’m not saying it won’t happen ... but you’ve got to be borderline incredible to come into a good college program and start at point guard as a true freshman.

Stats from the Western Illinois game have been updated on the team website. They were really mixed up after the game....
