Yeah, I'd say we are pretty spoiled here in this sub-1-Mil population state to have this epic rivalry play out year after year after year. And using local and regional players! You could make the argument that it depresses enthusiasm in other Summit programs, but I prefer to think that it elevates the conference and the sport of women's basketball.
Years ago after the D-1 move, girls were growing up in this state hoping to play in Brookings in front of adoring fans, winning titles and have a great shot at playing in the Big Dance in most years, and upsetting the big dogs occasionally. over the past few years I was hoping we would gradually take that mantle away from the Jacks, and watch them wallow in misery, or worse: claim that WBB doesn't mean that much to them after all.
Now days I have better perspective. What has actually happened is that we have two premier programs that aren't going away any time soon. Well established and well-paid coaches. Excellent facilities (for one of us, anyway). Large and loyal fan bases. Networks of recruiting pipelines. The premier mid-major women's college basketball tournament right in our backyard. National sports media attention. etc.
The rivalry is greater than the sum of it's parts.
I still want the Yotes to have the upper hand of course, but I no longer hope for a heavy deterioration of their program (only a little). I'm looking forward to the Jacks/Yotes matchups for years to come.

Rising tide lifts all boats. Nothing in the world wrong with having a rival that pushes you and between the two of you provide an example and an inspiration for little girls throughout your state. It’s a beautiful thing, really.

Take a look at both teams resume's from last year and there is a significant difference in the two programs. The Coyotes swept the Summit regular season and added the post season as well. 2 of the last 3 years the Coyotes went undefeated in league play. Of course the Jacks are a good program but wouldn't it be fair to say that SDSU has a significant margin to overcome just to get back to an even level with the Yotes. I think the gap probably narrows this year but we will see how that goes. I am very optimistic about the Coyotes freshman class but right now that is just hype and speculation until they get on the court.

Yes. Last year's State team wasn't as good as last year's USD team. That's not really much of a debate.

No question on who had the better team last year, the tougher question is who had the better team 2 years ago (prior to Duffy's injury in the SLT final)?

Great question. Honestly I think it was about as much of a coin flip as you could get. That was the quintessential lucky bounce here/unlucky injury there/bad call or two decides a game matchup.

Dominated the game at home, and played an excellent game in Frost to win. But in the title game it was close, almost too close. Remember that 3 that almost went in from half court before the half? If that goes in, the 2nd half could’ve been completely different. It didn’t and it wasn’t. Maybe we slayed the dragon once and for all and the voodoo of SDSU WBB at the SLT is gone. OR maybe it will be a one year wonder and they’ll come roaring back this season. Nothing will surprise me this season. What if none of our underclass seizes the opportunity? What if we get to a spot in a game and we’ve come up empty consecutive possessions and a lead is gone and they’re all looking around for Mckeever or Duffy to bail them out at the end of the shot clock, but they’re not there? Those are real things the team will have to deal with. It’s a different team and a new year.

Easmus is on the money. You’re replacing almost 80 minutes a game at the U where State is replacing 60 ... while also bringing back their best player. And I’ll let others decide how much more impactful Duffy, McKeever and Frederick’s 80 were to Larson, Bultsma and RCJ’s 60 and which side will be more able to reproduce/replace those minutes. I actually went and looked and State's departing trio actually played about 74 minutes a game. My apologies.

The Coyotes were the deeper team as well so they can likely afford the player losses a bit easier than the Jacks as well. The projection is based upon the regular season and when comparing the teams the Coyotes fair much better in the most fair way to determine the best team which is a home and away round robin. Apparently that will not be the case this year but in every other year that is the case.
The Coyotes have won the Summit many times when the Jacks were favored or another team was favored. So the year that Coyotes finally get the nod as pre season favorites what do they do? They don't do what the other favorites tend to do (not finish first) but instead they go out and annihilate the league and go undefeated. Underdog or favorite the bottom line is that the Yotes usually come up with the goods. The Jacks rarely do in the regular season in recent years. It is great to see the consistent hunger that the Coyotes reveal almost every year. They just never stop raising the bar.

The Men’s crossover classic is that big tournament being held at the Pentagon. Can’t find anything about a women’s classic. Hope this is true though.

Yeah, that OU article says they will play three games in three days from November 28-30 in Vermillion. The highly publicized men's tourney at the Pentagon is from Nov 25-27. The OU article also says opponents are TBD, so that might explain why an official announcement hasn't happened for the women's one. Great find!

OU is an interesting opponent. Sherri Coale has been coaching there for 25 years, and for most of that time they have been an elite or near-elite team.
in the eleven seasons from 2000 to 2010, they won the Big XII seven times, had an appearance in the National Championship game, three final four appearances, and nine sweet 16 appearances. Pretty dominant.
in the nine seasons since then, they have only been to one sweet 16, and have not been to any postseason in the last two seasons. I have to assume she is on a hot seat, despite her past success. That's not a great trend line.
Here's their conference finish over the last 4 years, plus predicted finish this year (coaches poll)
2017 3rd 2018 3rd 2019 8th 2020 9th 2021 7th* (predicted)
I have to think we have a good chance of beating them at home. They will no doubt have P5 talent, though. Probably some size and skill. Should be a fun one to watch.
