The Coyotes went into TDF Bank Stadium for a big paycheck and stole a huge win. Or rather, they beat up the Gophers and took the win.
What an impressive offensive display by the Yotes. For those of you who had questions about Dante coming into this season, I think he answered them yesterday.
Regretfully, I had to work and wasn't able to watch the game live. But I had a friend on the sidelines texting me updates while I was working. Needless to say, my mind wasn't exactly on my work for those 3+ hours.
Thankfully, I was able to catch a replay on the Big Ten Network. I was in awe of how easy it was for our guys to move the ball. Hopefully it's just the start of things to come this season. It's so encouraging that we have all these weapons and almost all of them are juniors or younger.

Exactly, the Coyotes were able to move the ball at will through the air. The Gophers were stacking the box to stop the run and thought they could play Powell, TD Flanigan and Nowotny one-on-one. Once Nowotny had the first deep catch of the game, I knew that the Yotes had a chance through the air.
Dante looked great and the joke Noah who? was heard at the stadium a couple times. Of course Noah was a GREAT QB for USD, but Dante put on a show. This is why Gorsuch transferred out basically.
The Coyote defense was tackling better then last year and played the run well until about the late 3rd to 4th quarter, but Minny has a pretty good running back and O-Line. The passing defense didn't really worry me because I swear Minny's WR's are 6'3 or taller and crazy good athletes. If Minnesota could get a decent quarterback, then their offense would be rolling, but Weber is not good.

I was at the game and had to slap myself about 5 times upside the head and pinch myself another 10 times to keep in mind that I was really at the stadium seeing all this unfold. When I woke up Sunday morning it was still true. Yes the Coyotes beat the Gophers. Some say the Gophers aren't any good, an no one is going to mistake them for a top level big 10 team but they won a road game against an average team that most consider to be better than USD.
What is interesting is that even the most ridiculous anti Coyote fans that watched the game had to admit that the Coyotes executed with sharp precision on offense for most of the game. Granted Minnesota was allowing USD to run open quite a bit but when the receivers were covered USD was still making the plays. NDSU and SDSU both played well against Minnesota but I think USD defeated Minnesota in kind of a shocking and statement making matter. The Yotes responded to adversity each and every time with great execution and did so at the games most critical moments.
I have talked in the past about USD not making big time plays in the big time moments but that was absolutely not the case against Minnesota. They could not have been more clutch. Actually as scarey as it is to say for others and as warm as it feels for USD fans the offense actually looked dominant against the Gophers. The Gophers really didn't do anything drastically wrong other than maybe being a bit flat. They simply got executed by the Yotes in more instances than they out executed USD.
When it comes to the Big 10 the conference hasn't necessarily been known to be a league with majorly talented skill position players and the teams generally give up speed to the Southern and Western teams.
As much as many will disagree I think USD's skill players are almost if not on an even level with Minnesota. Will Powell could start at receiver for Minnesota. Ganious could certainly have a shot to be on the roster as a runningback. Dante Warren is a much different type quarterback than Weber but I don't think Gopher fans would not be terribly disappointed to have him in their mix at quarterback.
Speaking of Dante Warren. Wow, was he awsome. So much for my notion of getting Wilhelm playing time because Warren is now a thrown in the fire proven stud quarterback that will only get better from his experience. USD needs to keep finding ways for him to use his legs to not only run but pass from outside the pocket. Whoever was calling plays on Saturday, and I am assuming that was Wes for the most part deserves huge credit. It was masterfull offensive efficiency throughout.
The Yotes should be proud and for all that were not at the stadium it was quite the scene after the game. USD was raising their helmets in celebration and Meierkort was as shocked as I had ever seen him. He had his arms on his head probabably for a multitude of reasons but being shocked may have been a big one.
Most of the USD fans were gathered in an area of the 2nd deck which was shown quite a bit on TV. After the game was over a good number of those fans made their way down to the first few rows of the seats in their corner of the field near the end zone at the open side of the field. The players were gathered together by the band with the fans right down there with them just into the stands. The band played as the players raised their arms in the air in celebration to salute the fans as well as their great accomplishment. Honestly I had a frog in my throat I was so proud of that moment.
USD did in one game what they have been building towards for a few years. Those oh so close agonizing last second losses over the past couple of years all came full circle at the perfect time. USD had deserved many wins that ended up being losses. I really felt that the gods kind of owed the Yotes a big one to go their way. With the help of many factors USD now has their shining moment, a moment that can be cherished for years to come, a moment I know I will never forget.

I do have to disagree with two things coyotefan. Will Powell wouldn't be in the top 5 for Minny WR's. The Gophers wide receivers have some pretty good talent, it's just the person getting them the ball doesn't have any talent. The wide receivers were burning USD all day. Will is great for USD, but for Minnesota, there are many CB's in the Big 10 that can cover him.
I don't know if Ganious would make the team. Minny did stack the box and all, and Ganious did well catching a couple huge passes, but he was stopped a lot. Plus Minnesota has a couple quality backs, one of which had a great game against Middle Tennessee and had another 100 yard game. So it would be tough to see Ganious coming close to cracking that squad.

#1,
Well I can say this when it comes to who can and who can't make it on the Gophers. USD beat Minnesota on the Gophers home field in front of a great atmosphere where everything should have been perfect for Minnesota to get a win. Read into it all you want but there are some aspects of the game that obviously USD did better. I don't think this is a one in a million type upset. I think people from USD should feel the excitement as if it was, but I think based on what I saw I think USD could win at least 1 out of every 10 times the two teams played. If Minnesota actually had to play in Vermillion when the Coyotes could benefit from their home environment it would be kind of fun to see how that Gopher team would react to not being able to hear their own words and having to play against an even more fired up defense. Obviously that will never happen but if Minnesota made a tour of having to visit the 4 Dakota Schools I don't think they would come out of it at 4 and 0 very often. 2-2 would be a typical result.

I do agree with that. Minnesota doesn't have much talent in the defensive back-field and USD clearly exploited it, which is much to effort of the offensive coord. Wes Beschoner.
The Gophers are decent against the run, but they were stacking based on USD's history, so they might get beat up later.
USD does have some better players out there, I will agree with that, which is why Brewster is on his way out.

Minnesota's Weber doesn't have any talent? Well I guess everybody is wrong. Weber has over 60 career starts, NFL scouts think highly of him, and Peyton Mannning thought he was one of the most talented QB's at their camp. The kid's pretty good.

Because NFL scouts are always right, right? How's JaMarcus Russell doing? Or Ryan Leaf? Akili Smith? Cade McNown? Tim Couch? The list goes on and on with who scouts love. Adam Weber is a very inaccurate quarterback who would get picked apart in the NFL. Yes, he has 60 career starts, but that's because they have no one else. Their best receiver is the back-up if that tells you anything. Having a ton of starts doesn't make you good.
Weber threw more picks then he did touchdowns last year and the projected draft position right now is Free Agent. The scouts aren't drooling over this kid at all. In fact, USC's back-up quarterback is getting more looks then Adam Weber.
Also, of course the Mannings are going to say he really improved, because if they don't say that, are people going to keep going to their camp?
After seeing this kid play up close and personal and just some of the mistakes he makes, he might be good in the UFL.

You had me at JaMarcus, no need to follow up with a Ryan Leaf reference. You used to much logic in picking apart my post.

However, I do agree that MN's receivers are much better than USDs and USDs RB would not start for MN. Bennett, #22, is a great RB. He is still coming back from an injury and he looks really really good at times. But anyways, I want to congratulate the Yotes. I was at the game and USDs offense worked MN up and down the field. They stepped up when they needed to and made some big plays. I still cannot believe they let Warren boot leg on the 4th and 1 on the 40-yard line. I even told the guy next to me that they were going to run that play. Was this possibly a really bad Div. I-A team? I think so. But it shouldn't hinder what USD accomplished because they stepped on the field and did it. Congrats and good luck the rest of the way.

Huge win. Going on the road and taking one from a Big 10 school (even if they look to finish near the bottom) is huge. Hope the guys build on this win and finish the year with the same intensity.
Was so exciting to watch in person - cannot wait to watch the televised version. The U should order a ton of DVD's of the game from the Big10 Network and send to every recruit they are going after.
Also, on a scheduling note - I know that when you have 2 BCS games as a FCS program every year it will sometimes result in two losses. After winning at UM my view is most likely tainted, but I think it is a solid strategy. 1. USD needs the money 2. For recruiting you can tell a recruit that he will have 8 opportunities against the highest level in front of huge crowds. 3. If and when you have success it is noticed.
If you take the route of playing the best programs that the FCS has to offer as your program's approach (Montana, Delaware, App St etc.) you could argue it is as hard to go in and win. The payoff if you win, is great from a playoff perspective, but from a recognition standpoint nationally - not even close. The only other positive I can see is that if you can secure a home and home agreement with those elite FCS schools, you get as solid of a home game as you could ever hope to get in Vermillion.
If SD State had beaten Delaware would they have had clips on ESPN and been talked about? My guess is no. Would the casual fan recognize the accomplishment? no (Even though that would be a huge win.)
Not a big deal for real fans that follow the program, but let's face it - we live in a superficial world. When the Yote staff calls on the HS coaches in schools they have built relationships, I would think they will remember South Dakota's win against the Big 10 - and if not a reminder will be impactful. Telling the same coaches, "Hey, we went out to Montana and dominated" would not carry the same weight as "We are undefeated against the Big 10. Did you see us go into UM?"
Go Yotes.

I missed the game since I was in the middle of the Black Hills without any communication services. I only had about 300 text messages with updates and congrats on the win. Talk about one time when I enjoyed having to scroll through 300 plus text messages.
Go Yotes.

Talk about the impact a game like this can have on a program both short term and long term.
Short Term:
1.) I just got an email from Knud Nielsen (the kicker from the '78 Championship team) and he lives in DENMARK. It was the number story of USA college football in Europe. he emailed me to pass on to the coaches, fans, etc how proud he was of this new breed of Coyotes.
2.) It certainly has created a large amount of interest in the USD fan base wanting to watch USD play. We now are being considered as having a good chance to win games against NDSU, UNI, etc. and the level of interest has grown.
LONG TERM:
1.) It is my hope that this win lays the foundation for those fans wanting to help support USD football (and all sports forthat matter) both finacially and with fan support.
2.) Signups for membership to the Howling Pack should increase significantly and wanting to get involved.
As a former player myself, let me tell you how much fun this whole weekend was. We had several former players come from all over the country to Minneapolis to spend a weekend together. It started with a golf tournament on Friday afternoon (best shot) followed by a banquet that night. AD Sayler, Coach Boots and others spoke to the group.
Then former players that live in Minneapolis hosted a tailgate before the game where drinks, food, and a great deal of good 'ol fashioned fun took place. Then came the highlight obviously, and that was the win over Minnesota. It was NO FLUKE, the Coyotes belonged on that field, and they proved it the duration of that game.
Following the game was a fantastic social event at Sally's bar. The energy USD fans had could have powered an entire city. The music was great and loud. High fives were everywhere and just tons of fun.
People, that is the College Gameday Experience. Obviously we can't experience a major upset every weekend of that magnitude, but following the Coyotes to all home games and selected away games can be a great deal of fun. Pregame parties with grilling, a few sodas or beers, and fans interacting with one another is just plain FUN.
Get behind this team and show them your support and at the same time, have some fun. It takes a commited effort at first, but once it is routine, you would be surprised how much fun it is.
