South Dakota has moved into the top 25 following their win over then-No. 13 North Dakota. Midco Sports' Jay Elsen sat down with Coyotes head coach Bob Nielson to get his reaction on that, Mason Lorber's program record-tying 54 yard field goal and the injury to cornerback Myles Harden.

What impressed me about this interview was how Bob Nielson actually had a specific plan designed for the hail mary play with one person to go into the melee and others to be in specific positions in relation to where the mod is jumping for the ball. That is impressive that even a play like that is drawn up eventhough Bob says it would rarely work. I have always thought the hail mary play was at higher odds of being successful than most. I actually get annoyed when my team gets close to mid field at the end of a half or game and does not try this.
IMO as long as the quarterback has the time and can get the ball off and it comes down close to the end zone that the odds of a completion although long are IMO closer to 5-10% than it is to 1% or less. On the other hand when a team tries to throw it underneath and to have to run by the entire defense is much more of a longshot.
I have always been a proponent of the hail mary play as a legit chance to score off of. I would even go as far as trying a hail mary from mid field when it is 3rd down and longer than 20. If the team intercepts it is probably going to be just like a punt anyway.

Ball at the 50. 4th down and 22 yards to go. 3rd quarter with 19:29 to play. You’d do a Hail Mary?

Ball at the 50. 4th down and 22 yards to go. 3rd quarter with 19:29 to play. You’d do a Hail Mary? I don't on 4th down but would consider it on 3rd down. For the record I never said on 4th down. I believe in analytics and playing probabilities so if I were a coach I would study the odds of what to do in each situation. I can understand not doing this but what really bugs me is when there is only time for one play on the 50 and a team just takes a knee and goes to half. There are many things that coaches do now a days likely based on analytics that you would have never seen in the past. That does not mean in every single situation that it would be best to use analytics because a coach needs to gauge intangibles but for the most part those that use them are likely to be better for it more often than not.
