Will this be redemption week for the defending champ/ preseason favorite Yotes? Or reality week, when the doubts about where this team stacks up are confirmed? Either way, it will be a moment of truth, and a measuring stick. The toughest possible road trip to close out the first half of this double-round-robin conference season.
Thursday @ Omaha 7PM Saturday @ Denver 2PM

Looking at stats between these three teams (USD, Omaha, Denver) there is no wonder that we three top the standings. I'll probably go into more detail in the stats thread, but here are some general observations:
USD vs. Omaha is a contrast in strengths. They are a very strong defensive team, and have maybe the best back row. We are a very strong offensive team and have maybe the best front row. We are the better serving team, they are the better receiving team.
The Omaha match is kind of a ying-yang type matchup. Massey has us losing 1-3 in Omaha.
USD vs. Denver looks even tougher on paper. Denver is a much more balanced team with few obvious weaknesses. They are at or near the top of every major stat category. The one thing they are slightly less good at is their dig numbers, which is basically our worst stat as well. We are the best in conference in both blocks and not getting blocked. They are the conference leaders in both serving and receiving serve.
The Denver match is like playing a burgundy version of ourselves... (very creepy metaphor). Massey has us losing 1-3 in Denver.

Heres an interesting statistic for Massey. In the last 6 matches against Omaha, the yotes are 4-2. In the last 5 matches against Denver, the yotes are 5-0....with only one of those matches against Denver in Vermillion.(3 wins at Denver, 1 at Sioux Falls, 1 at Vermillion) The games still have to be played, but I like our odds.

I’ll stick my neck out and say both matches…. will go 5 sets.
But I’ll also go with a win in O-Town; loss in the mile-high city.

From the article: OMAHA Omaha has started the league slate at 6-0, having dropped just two sets. Four of those six matches have been at home as the Mavericks will play seven of first nine league contests at home. Sadie Limback, a six-foot senior, ranks second in the Summit League at 3.85 kills per set to go with a strong .342 hitting percentage in all matches. During league play, the returning first team All-Summit League performer is averaging 4.40 kills per set and hitting .330. Mariah Buss, a six-foot sophomore transfer from Wichita State, is at 2.77 kills per set overall and is up to 3.35 kills per set during league play. Shayla McCormick, a 5-11 freshman, is averaging 2.63 kills per set in the Mavericks six league contests. Omaha's offensive attack is directed by junior setter Sami Clarkson, second in the Summit League at 10.63 assists per set. The honorable mentiuon all-league selection a year ago, is up to 12.05 assists per set during league play, tops in the Summit. The Mavericks defense is led by libero Jaiden Centeno, a 5-7 junior transfer from Iowa State, who tops the Summit League during league play at 5.05 digs per set. Claire Mountjoy, the Summit's Defensive Player of the Year in the spring, is averaging 3.55 digs per set during league play.

I hadn't realized that Omaha will have played 7 of 9 league matches at home. That makes for a tough 2nd half of the schedule. Perfect for the Yotes to make up ground in the standings. We need this win today, though.
Sadie Limback is a deadly Opposite (Right Side) Hitter. She has switched to a 6-rotation player recently, as her serving has improved. The match I watched (vs. ORU) she had a good number of service errors, though.
Centeno is a very very good Libero. Both her numbers, and when I watched that match, she was all over the court with diving saves, and was placing passes well to the setter. When Mountjoy (Former Libero the last 3 years) is in at DS, it's basically like they have two liberos on the floor.
Our middles should dominate them at the net, though. Hopefully that will turn the tides in our favor. We need Harms in "volleyball terminator robot" mode.

...And then there's this guy. Red Army is a twitter fan account for the Maverics, and it's pretty darn good. Grade-A smack. Twitter users feel free to respond (all in good fun, of course)...

Heads up; Baxter Arena is letting in anyone wearing black or Mavs gear in tonight for FREE..... I hear layering is a frugal strategy to stay warm in the fall....... and a black outer layer absorbs heat..... ....just some random thoughts....

I grew up close to Omaha. Nobody there cares about UNO athletics. Even hockey has dwindled in popularity. That may be true, but there are a hell of a lot of volleyball fans in that city. Taking Nebraska to five sets earlier this fall draws a little extra attention. And their roster is 90% local girls. I don't know if any of that helps build their fanbase, but it should. Plus, urban fans tend to be fickle. They will show up in droves for a winning team (for example, the "Jaysker" phenomenon). I've seen Yote and Jack fans at Baxter in decent numbers for basketball, and also for volleyball at Creighton. A good crowd would be good for the sport, regardless of what color they wear IMO.

O I agree. I was just stating that UNO athletics is like third or fourth tier in the Omaha area in terms of fan interest. Even though they are both Division I, folks in Omaha don't consider Creighton and UNO to be in the same class. Volleyball is huge in the Omaha area. Everyone wants Husker tickets, some want to go watch Creighton, very few are going to watch UNO outside of local family members.

Down 2-1 after winning first set in convincing style. Struggling with our passing again.

Win 5th set and we’ve swung momentum back our way in conference standings
