Friday, Dec 7 @ 7PM - no TV options, but GoYotes live stream available.
By most measures, this former Summit/Midcontinent/Horizon team should be a similar or lesser opponent compared to Wichita State and Bradley.
- Picked #6 in MVC preseason (just behind Bradley)
- They play a "5-out" offense and a "switching" defense, whatever that all means.
- Return 4 senior starters from last year
- 2021 first-team all-MVC 5'-7" point guard Shay Frederick is their best player (10 PPG, 5 Assist, 1.75 Asst/TO)
- They are 0-7 on the season. worst game was a road loss to Illinois-Chicago 64-68, best game was a road loss to Michigan State 62-73.
Predictions: USD W 68-50 (Massey) USD W 70-47 (Warren Nolan R1) USD W 71-45 (Warren Nolan ELO)

5 out is basically a 5-guard offense with no post player. Usually means you'll be relying on the 3-point shot. Switching defense should be switch on all screens, but it could mean changing from zone to man depending on keys, but that's usually referred to as combination defense.

So if you always switch, it kinda functions as a zone-ish defense, right? interesting. I'd be curious what Dawn's defense is defined as. It seems like we are really good at keeping teams out of the paint with help-side defense, crashing in on dribble-drives, etc. but does she schematically do something different than standard? Or is it more just about discipline and doing it well?

Or is it more just about discipline and doing it well? To some degree, but a coach is also saying every player is capable of playing both post and perimeter defense. You can get caught in some major mismatches with this though. With today's positionless offenses where every player should have both post and perimeter skills some coaches might think this is the answer, One thing that's made the USD offense so tough in the past years and has been the fact that the post players have been capable of stepping out and hitting the three pointer. Started with Fogg, then Liveringhouse, Fredrick, Sjerven a little bit, and now Mazurek is developing that as part of her game. Same with the men's team with Hagadorn and now Tasos. That can toss a major monkey wrench into a defensive game plan. As for the USD women I just think they're just outstanding in kind of the old school, Bobby Knight help defense. Watch how the defender plays when they're on ball, one pass or two passes away, or when their player is crosscourt from the ball. They're putting on a clinic. I also see switching on guard-to-guard screens, but not on post to guard screens. Sjerven in usually in the lane.

Well this was unexpected:
"The Valpo women’s basketball team stood toe-to-toe with one of the nation’s top teams Wednesday night at the ARC, leading #22/23 Notre Dame into the second half before the Fighting Irish pulled away late for a 73-56 victory. Shay Frederick (Greenville, Wis./Hortonville) led the Valpo offense with a season-best 19 points."

Big ol winter storm tomorrow… is this game in jeopardy? I would think they're probably already here. Won't be much of a crowd though.

Insane. Yotes up 17-12 at the half! Valpo has been good at keeping us out of the paint, but we keep trying anyway. Yotes taking bad shots. They’d better figure this out and make some adjustments…. Ugly game offensively.

Obviously hitting 3s will help, but shouldn’t we be trying some midrange shots too?
