Kyah Watson will forever be known as the "Selland Stopper" in my house. I mentioned to a couple of my Yote fan counterparts before the game that she was the key on defense and she came through big time. The rest of the girls did an equally nice job but Kyah has absolutely stymied Selland in 2 of the last 3 meetings.

Couple things my group could not figure out during the game: - Why was Selland playing so oddly desperate? She spent half the game on the ground looking for a cheap foul. In 2nd half she went flying in to lane, through up a ridiculous shot and flailed to the ground, but the 2 USD players moved out of her way - literally zero contact - then the Yotes went the other way for a 5-on-4. And she had at least 3 passes to absolutely no one. - I'm sure our SDSU readers can chime on refs, but with 5 minutes left in Q3, USD had been called for 4 fouls, and SDSU 0 (the 5th was called with 3:43 left). We thought for sure SDSU would shoot a million FT's, but they decided to only shoot 3's. Then SDSU turned the ball over on something like 4 of the next 5 possessions. The Yotes were in foul trouble - not SDSU. Maybe we should have booed more? - It was an unexpected and interesting strategy to have Krull match up with Selland when Watson had to sit with foul trouble. The quickness bothered her. - SDSU did shoot the 3 pretty well - 8 threes. But only made 6 twos. That is both good D and the result of a fantastic game plan. I thought that was going to be big trouble, but in the end I think they only got to the line for bonus free throws once and got two points out of that favorable situation. They were put on the line one other time, but that was a shooting foul so it didn't matter. Started out the same way in the fourth quarter as the 'Yotes were whistled for the first three fouls of the quarter, but that didn't turn out to be anything that hurt us either. One thing that jumped out to me was the bunnies attempted 22 shots in the fourth quarter and USD only 8. A 14-shot differential usually doesn't end up well and if you would have told me before the game that we'd only make one field goal in the fourth quarter, I might have just headed home. Bunny fans are always so predictable: the refs constantly screw them, the announcers are always biased against them, the other team's coach is a whiny bitch (female) or obnoxious prick (male) and the other team's players are dirty, cheap shot artists. ***** Be very careful of your usage of the words "through" and "threw". I wouldn't want kiyoat to have a stroke.

Also, one huge turning point in the fourth quarter was the time the bunnies had four possessions in one trip down the floor and didn't score. They kept getting offensive rebounds, or the ball was out of bounds on red, but all that happened was zero points, several misses on wide open threes and at least one blown layup. Ate up a lot of clock too.

The bunnies did have more shots than we did in the fourth quarter. However, in the last 4 minutes, each time we got the ball, they fouled us and we went to the free-throw line. There’s the difference right there.

There’s the difference right there. It also explains how SDSU ended up with more fouls than USD. For all the complaining by our SDSU friends about the officials and it being a physical game, USD was called for far more fouls (until SDSU fouled on purpose to end the game).

I think the important thing to understand about SDSU fans is that unless the fouls are 5+ for USD and 0 for SDSU each and every quarter of every game then they will always whine and cry about the officiating.

The common excuses are always the officiating or the "they've never beat us when we were healthy". Over on their board, the big conversation now is how they are the heavy favorite already for next year and how we will fall to the 3rd or 4th best in the conference lol. I like our young players better than their veterans frankly. The only reason Watson, Kroll, Larkin, Ugofsky, etc haven't put up crazy numbers is because they haven't had to when Chloe, Hannah, and Liv do enough to handle every other team in the conference on their own.

I think it's reasonable to say we take a step back competitively next year. You don't lose two MVP-caliber, and one all-conference player(s) and expect to just be the favorite again. The Jacks will rightly be the preseason favorites, but I can't imagine us not being picked 2nd, either.
I'm optimistic that we will have a team that can compete well with the Jacks next season, probably more so at the the end of the season. We have seen all of Krull, Watson, Larkins and Peplowski improve significantly though this season, and three of those were freshmen. Larkins in particular could make a big jump next year when she is more comfortable in the motion offense, and be a featured scorer. Remember that most of Dawn's best players have had a big jump after their first year. It's just an offensive system that rewards experience, I think. And these coaches are big on development.
The wildcards will be Hansen and Hempe, I think. Both were out most of the season with injury, and both have proven to be deep scoring threats in the past (and both have length). The questions are how durable they will be after injury, and how good either one is on the defensive end. If you don't play lockdown defense, you don't generally get minutes on this team.
Also, don't sleep on Guebert or Mazurek. If they improve defensively they will get minutes, I think, and both can score effectively.
Our bench players will still be the envy of any Summit team not named SDSU.

I think we'll have the horses (or filly's as it were) to run with anyone again next year. Dawn and her staff have proven to be excellent player developers and our strength and conditioning program is excellent. Larkins is going to be the next Lamb, we'll have a platoon to replace the minutes from Sjerven, and Krull/Watson are going to improve their offense as well when they need too. We still haven't seen what Carson or Duffney have either. Hansen, Ugofsky, Hempe, Guebert, our incoming players, we have some very exciting things to watch in '22-'23.
Before that happens though, I'm just going to enjoy the last ride with our super seniors! Go Yotes!

State fans blaming the refs for their losses is as timed honored a tradition as the football players cramping.
