WBB SLT: Championship vs SDSU

Finally the game both teams and their fans have been waiting for.

The preseason polls had these teams1&2.

Every single poll, ranking system, standings and major statistics category had us 1&2 from the start to the end of the season.

Neither team lost to, or was ever seriously threatened by another Summit team.

So here we are. The third and final Showdown.

I was fortunate to be on the first football team when the rivalry was renewed and I remember getting an email at the time that said anyone caught throwing a rabbit on the field or court will have their scholarship revoked and be expelled lol.

I remember the game in 1980 where 200 baby chicks painted blue and gold were released inside the Dome. During warmups these little birds ran heater skelter everywhere and probably 5-10 times during the game ref’s had to stop the game as one or two sauntered on the floor and ran like hell all over the place.

Honestly the rivalry used to be so wild from the stories I’ve heard. I attended USD from 2014-2019 and outside of the usual hate state stuff nothing ever happened really. This would be an interesting topic to dive into in the off seasons, but had USD gone D1 with state would our rivalry still be as wild? Or would it have been forced to take down either way? (Maybe there’s already a thread on it too that I can just go read lol)

But back on topic. I’m optimistic today, but nervous. We had to play a very physical game yesterday and SDSU had another cake walk. The only plus side is that with the starters in foul trouble yesterday they did end up sitting for large portions. I think we send the bunnies home without a trophy though.

Yeah, I'm certainly less confident than I was about halfway through the season. This Jacks team has really come together over the course of the season, and are a formidable opponent. They are playing really good team defense, as well. In some ways these teams are built like mirror-images.

Having Meyer unavailable might be an X-factor. Or maybe not.

Sjerven or Lamb might be our X-factor. or maybe not.

I think the team that shoots well from the arc is going to have the better afternoon. The way the post is officiated will go a long way in determining the winner, as well.
