So here is a question for the portal curious among us. What does this team need most in terms of potential additions? I suppose the answer depends a bit on whether Maddie is back. Personally a great shooter would be high on my list. Length. That's all for me. We haven't seen the scoring potential of Larkins yet and I think Guebert can be your 3 point artist. USD needs a rim defender that can put up 12 pts a game on put backs. Go find some 6'4" girl from an under performing P5.

It’s not just our conference, it is every conference. There are players transferring out of almost every team that was in the elite eight. Multiple players. Several teams have more than eight players transferring out, including P5 teams. I think once the Covid deflation finishes, possibly after next year, we will see more of a return to normal. Plus, expectations will have been tempered by the results of players not improving their lot as much as expected this year. A huge majority of these players will find themselves at the lower conference levels than where they started, including the D2 level. There are some players in our league that have already found a new spot but haven’t announced them yet, and of the 3 that I know of, two of them are going to D2 schools. Sorry, but this is the new normal in college athletics. I realize we're talking WBB here but this same thing is happening in MBB, Football, VB, and Hockey. It is, literally, the same story and the same percentages across every single sport with the same results of some players transfer up with success and the majority cycling down to lower levels. Also, the numbers of players entering the portal isn't always a player looking for greener grass. A majority of portal entries are due to change of circumstances in the program or come on the heels of an exit interview where the player is encouraged to move on and look for opportunities elsewhere where they will be a "better fit". The portal might sound like a great idea for player freedom but it's also being used by coaches to process players and turn over the roster. The Grambling volleyball coach just famously cut her entire team after workouts and is starting over. The foolish NCAA decision on the extra COVID year has only exacerbated the problem. Much like the red hot housing market favors sellers, the current glut of college athletes available favors coaches. There are a lot of HS age kids out there that will miss out on their window and opportunity to play college sports along with current college athletes that get processed because of this. Some serious changes need to be made to the portal, frankly, to protect these student-athletes. 99% of these kids are not going pro yet they are getting processed out at a remarkable rate. While "player freedom" sounds great in theory, the reality is that the new portal age is a detriment to the majority of these kids who go through the process.

It is not just players looking for playing time its large number of our top talent in the league. Your looking at the loss of top scorers and rebounders in the the conference as well as some very talented players that fill major roles on these various teams. the number players who have either transferred or still in the portal account for 21% of all the roster players in the conference for all teams. This cannot be good for the conference and I believe this trend continues the new commissioner of league will need to look at the reasons for such large number of players leaving the conference. Haven't you already speculated that players are leaving because the SD schools are blocking the route to the NCAA tourney and so players are seeking teams that have a better chance? And are a large number of players leaving the Summit? Players in Portal: 1,128 Conferences in D1: 32 Schools in D1: 356 Average Players leaving per conference: 35.25 Average Players leaving per team: 3.2 Players leaving the Summit according to kiyoat: 31 So in actuality it looks as though the SL is pretty much on par (or even a little below) what is happening throughout the country. So it's pretty clear this isn't a SL issue but a college basketball issue. Actually, I separated "currently in the portal" (31) from "already announced a school" (10), so the total number is 41 for the Summit, or 4.1 transfers per school. So a little higher than the national average of 3.2. It's all relative, though. The reasons for transfer are probably diverse. It's not something you can just blame on one thing (dominance of the SD schools). So I agree with that.

Here’s one Coach K should look at: Zareia Chevre 5’10 Redshirt F Forward from Twin Cities area Monmouth WBB Did not get a lot of minutes her freshman year, but was a three time All-Conference and two times MVP player in high school. Played for Minnesota Fury AAU.

Played for Minnesota Fury AAU. That's a good thought. Another one is Anaya Barney from Northern Iowa. 5'11" guard. Redshirted as a freshman last year. Iowa 5A player of the year from Cedar Falls as a senior. Averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds per game senior year. Same all state team as Grace Larkins. Also competed against Larkins in track in the 400m hurdles as a sophomore. I see Kayla mentioned possibly adding "a few" transfers and specifically mentioned adding some experience.

So here is a question for the portal curious among us. What does this team need most in terms of potential additions? I suppose the answer depends a bit on whether Maddie is back. Personally a great shooter would be high on my list. Are some of the players you mentioned leaving USD for other colleges? I’m sure Maddie is out! Maybe we should all list players that the coaches should recruit. I bet they check this site daily. I have no idea what to make of this very strange post.

I like the two suggestions so far! I think that our best bet would be players with backgrounds in the local region. They'd be more likely to consider USD. Plus, a lot of great HS GBB is played here. Also, players that had a previous recruiting relationship with Kayla might help. So maybe some girls that the U of Wisconsin were trying to get?
In terms of need, it probably depends on what Coach K wants to run. She mentioned keeping our focus on hard-nosed man defense, and a motion offense, but she also wanted to increase the pace of the offense. That tracks with what Drake has run through the current and former coach, (at least on offense).
So maybe she will be looking more for speed and sniping over size?
Luckily, our roster is pretty balanced at the moment in terms of position. Guebert and Pep will be graduating next year (unless one of them takes a covid year...), so to maintain balance, I'd guess Coach K might be looking to add at least one big and one shooting guard. Maybe three shooting guards....?

I understand where it comes from with a name of Kayla Karius, but enough of the Coach K references.

I did a deeper dive on the transfer portal this weekend and here's a list of potential additions that caught my attention. I pretty much limited to kids from the Midwest. I also included some grad transfers because I have a feeling Kayla might want to add some experience. Many have already been mentioned but I'm adding some stats and additional information where I was able to find some.
Aubrey Jones - 5-8 sophomore Iowa State. 6.2 points and 4.7 rebounds last year. Can shoot it with 42.5% rate from the arc. Also seems to be a good rebounder for her size (several double digit rebound games) which tells me she is a scrapper. From Iowa City. Says she has heard from USD.
Rachel Hakes - 6-0 grad transfer from Fairfield. From Woodbury MN. 7.3 points 5.3 rebounds 5.8 assists and 1.5 steals last year. 6.7 assists the previous season. Shot 42.4% from the arc last year. Would add experience and balanced productivity.
Emma Grothaus - 6-3 grad transfer from Lehigh. 12.6 points and 9.1 rebounds last year. Appears to be a true post. Outstanding rebounder with 10 double doubles last year. From Mahtomedi MN. Experience again.
Anna Mortag 6-0 sophomore IUPUI. 6.6 points 3.2 rebounds last year. 34.8% from 3. 14 points and 4 rebounds in 13 minutes in their tourney game against Oklahoma. From Milwaukee WI.
Paige Bradford 6-0 forward UMKC. From Davenport Iowa. 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game last year. Senior who played 2 years at UMKC after 2 years at JUCO. Not sure if she's graduated but should have 1 more year regardless.
Rachel Ranke 6-1 grad transfer from Kansas State. 9.0 points 4.4 rebounds 2.4 assists. Has been a double digit scorer most of her time at K State but has dealt with injuries it appears. From Burnsville MN. Followed by Carson and Geubert on twitter. Over 1000 career points.
Carly Krsul 6-1 Junior Bucknell. From Plymouth MN. 9.8 points 6.3 rebounds 1.6 assists 1.6 blocks last year.
Nicole Avila-Ambrosi 5-9 guard from Cak Baptist. Omaha kid. Super freshman last year. 10.9 points 2.9 rebounds 1.7 assists 1.6 steals as true freshman. Appeared to deal with some injuries last year and numbers were down. 5.3 points 1.4 rebounds 0.8 assists. Played more later in the year and averaged 9.7 points over the last 10 games.
Olivia Lane 6-2 junior UND. 11.8 points and 9.0 rebounds last year. 9 double doubles. Led the Summit in rebounding i think. From Merrifield MN. 2 to play.
Ellie Dague - 5-10 guard from NDSU. Henning MN. Did not play as freshman (I think injury but not sure). Including here because I seem to remember people thinking she was a great get for NDSU. Big high school numbers.
Alexis Pratt 5-5 point guard Omaha. From St. Paul MN. Again I seem to remember her being a big get for Omaha. Played a lot as a freshman but shooting numbers were very poor (27.9 % from the floor). 5.3 points 2.9 rebounds 2.3 assists. She is FAST and clocked at sub 12 seconds in the 100m dash in HS. Followed by USD track and field of all things. Given her shooting numbers, maybe track would be a good choice.
Anaya Barney - 5-11 G Northern Iowa. From Cedar Falls Iowa. Discussed in a previous post.
Zareia Chevre 5-10 forward from Monmouth. Twin Cities native. Was discussed by Hoopsmom in previous post.
Ellie Foster 5-10 Freshman Green Bay. From Dike IA. 2.9 points 0.9 rebounds 0.5 assists last year.
Sorry if this is long winded.

I missed a big one that kiyoat listed.
Caitlyn Harper - Rs soph California Baptist. From Hatland WI. 17.8 points 5.9 rebounds 1.3 assists 1.3 steals 1.6 blocks last year. Has been at Cal Baptist for 4 years but still apparently has two to play as she had a medical redshirt (played in only 5 games one year) and of course the covid year. 2021-22 WAC player of the year. Has visited Purdue recently so there is lots of competition for her.
Would be a huge addition. From Wisconsin so I imagine Kayla is familiar with her.

There could also be some late additions to the portal. Student-athletes transferring once within the division can play immediately as long as they notify the school by the deadline. The deadline for fall and winter sports is May 1 every year. Will be an interesting week in the portal.

Funny - Several of these names are also being discussed on the Minnesota GopherHole message board. If offered by both schools, I wonder which one they would pick? 😂 Grothaus, Hakes, and Ranke (if healthy) would all be great gets. I think Cal Baptist had a coaching change. Also, Ellie Dague already committed to St. Thomas.
