Omaha just hammered the Pioneers in Denver 3-0. Two of the sets were very competitive, but they still got the sweep. It's a very good thing we were able to win both home matches against those two.

Big upset this weekend was North Dakota over NDSU, creating a 3-way tie for first in the standings. As the schedule starts to balance, the standings are making more sense. North Dakota and NDSU will face Omaha and Denver this coming weekend, so that will fix the top of the standings, likely. North Dakota is doing all the right things to stay in that top-tier of 6 teams that make the Summit Tournament. ORU and KC are now in an uphill battle. In the RPI, USD is the only one with a small chance of an at-large bid, and would probably have to win out at this point. our SOS deteriorates every week, so just one more loss would torpedo our RPI. Maybe that ship has already sailed... might be time for a new metric in volleyball, like the NET in basketball.

At the halfway point, and the standings now pretty accurately reflect the strength of teams. USD and Omaha now top both the standings and the RPI rankings. USD continues to slide in RPI as they keep winning matches. Whadayagonna do? Big upsets this weekend were NDSU sweeping Denver in Denver, and Oral Roberts and KC both beating SDSU in Brookings. North Dakota also took the Pios to five sets! I have to admit that NDSU has earned a spot in the top-4 teams. Not a paper tiger. The big question for me is what has happened to Denver and SDSU? North Dakota is no fluke, and I think their coach might be on a collision course for COY honors ORU and KC are "not dead yet" and St Thomas gets their first conference win of the season, over WIU.

After 10 or 11 conference matches, Three tiers have now formed with regard to standings. Top tier(5) USD, NDSU, Omaha, UND and Denver are all within a match or 1/2 match of each other. Nothing is set in stone yet, but this group has the easiest path to the 6-team tournament. Seeding and the regular season title are still up for grabs, though. Not many matches left between the leaders of this group, so The matches involving NDSU and UND will probably determine the final order. The Yotes' 5-set wins over Denver and Omaha keeps us in the pole position for a regular season title for now.On the RPI front we still hold a (very) slim chance of an at-large consideration, but unfortunately, our schedule lacks an impressive OOC win. Missouri, UTEP and UNC have really dropped in RPI from where they usually are. Kinda wish we would have skipped that Stetson tournament and gone to a P-5 tournament instead... hopefully next season we will up the overall difficulty. In the Middle tier, there is now a 3-way tie for 6th place, with a tournament spot on the line. SDSU, Kansas City and Oral Roberts are in a dogfight for it (although there is still plenty of time for things to change). St Thomas and WIU are not yet statistically out of the running for the Summit Tournament, but they are close. For them, every week is now mainly an opportunity to get an upset and build for next year TBH.

Having our two primary competitors from recent years (Denver and Omaha) behind us (4-0!!!) feels great. We have to stay focused, by first avoiding an SDSU upset and then avenging our NDSU loss. Things are coming together nicely for sure.

Things are coming together nicely for sure. Absolutely. And we get those two at home, which is a big advantage with the fans we draw. Our home average attendance is in the 1200s, and could be higher by the end. I’m thinking around #30 ranked attendance this year, which would be yet another broken record in the Williamson era.

With just 5 or 6 conference matches left of the regular season, Divisions between the three tiers have deepened. In the Top tier, USD, NDSU, Omaha, UND and Denver are all within 1/2 match of each other, although the order of teams has not changed since last week. This group is a near-lock for the 6-team tournament. I think that the Yotes have a slight edge in remaining schedule, plus the slight edge in record for a regular-season title. North Dakota has a real gauntlet left, even if those matches are mostly at home. In the Middle tier, there is still a tight 3-way race for 6th place, with the last tournament spot on the line. SDSU, Kansas City and Oral Roberts are running out of time to make their case, and generate some separation from the other two. Given the remaining schedule, I'll give SDSU the slight edge. St Thomas and WIU will be out of the Summit Tournament race with one or two more losses.

Question, but why are both of our matches against UND in the second half of the season? We’ve played everyone else once except them.

No idea, but the last trip both USD and SDSU made up to North Dakota was also on a Tuesday. We played NDSU and they played UND. Now we will both have to go back up there and play the other team. Seems inefficient. The travel-partner scheduling has made sense other than that IMO.

Conference race is getting interesting, SDSU did us a major favor last night beating NDSU in Fargo.
