Our matches with them have become meaningful and competitive in recent years. We just happen to have still won all of them (remembering that 2021 summit semi-finals match still raises my heart rate). I think the current hierarchy is just about right.

preseason poll is out! I put it in the first post of this thread.
2023 Summit League Volleyball Preseason Coaches' Poll
Rank School Points (1st) 2022 Record (SL)
1. South Dakota ........61 (6) 29-4 (16-2) 2. North Dakota State 54 (2) 21-12 (13-5) 3. Omaha .................53 (1) 20-11 (14-4) 4. South Dakota State 39 18-15 (11-7) 5. North Dakota .........34 12-18 (9-9) 6. Denver ..................30 19-12 (12-6) 7. Kansas City ............25 10-21 (7-11) 8. St. Thomas ............16 4-26 (2-16) 9. Oral Roberts ..........12 9-21 (6-12)
This is close to what I'm guessing. I have NDSU/Omaha switched, and UND/SDSU switched too. The votes were 1 point apart for NDSU/Omaha, and 5 points for UND/SDSU, so it's pretty close to what I'm seeing.
1. South Dakota 2. Omaha 3. NDSU 4. UND 5. SDSU 6. Denver 7. KC 8. St. Thomas 9. ORU

First week results
1. USD (1-1)- swept by a very good (#38 AVCA, preseason #7 of 13 in Big XII) Iowa State team, swept an OK (#6 of 11 Big East) DePaul team. Not bad!
2. NDSU (3-0) beat three bad teams in 4-set matches. Took care of business
3. Omaha (0-2) Lost a good (preseason #8 of 13 SEC) Texas A&M team in 4 sets, and swept by a very good (#26 AVCA, preseason #5 Big XII) Kansas team. - Hard to read much about them yet.
4. SDSU (1-2) beat a bad team and swept by an above-average Green Bay (#3 Horizon) team, and lost in 4 to a below-average Wyoming (#10 of 11 MWC) team. - a little below expectations so far
5. UND (0-3) lost in 4 sets to a good Montana State team (#4 BSC), and swept by two average teams: Kennesaw St (#3 ASUN), and Oregon State (#11 Pac-10). - not a good start
6 Denver (0-2) lost to a below-average North Florida team (#5 ASUN) and swept by an average NMSU team (#4 C-USA) - not a good start
7 Kansas State (3-0) beat three bad teams in 4-set matches. took care of business.
8 UST (0-3) Lost in three sets to two below-average teams, lost in 5 sets to a good UIC team (#3 MVC) - looks promising for improvement
9 ORU (1-2) played three below-average teams, and lost to two of them - looks about right for 9th place

Kudos to the state of Nebraska as they set an all time attendance record for a woman’s match of any sport. Nebraska beat UNO 3-0 with double digit wins, but the story of the match is they played outside in the football stadium in front of 92,003 fans. That’s freakin impressive

It was pretty entertaining. Amazing accomplishment. Basically came to fruition after Wisconsin VB broke the NCAA VB attendance record last year. Coach Cook basically said "hold my beer...". I think this is a good example of how rivalries can make teams and programs push the limits of what is possible, and move the sport forward as a result. We've seen it with the NDSU/SDSU football rivalry, and the USD/SDSU WBB rivalry.
I think we are seeing all of the Dakota-4 step up their programs in Volleyball too. Should make for some good rivalry energy. Unfortunately, Denver, KC and ORU are taking a step backwards. And after I saw Omaha play yesterday, they won't be very good this year either until they figure out their setter situation. All three of their setters played, and none of them looked great. They need to find the starter and work on their connections IMHO.
I think NDSU will be our main competition this year, maybe SDSU. If Van Hook is our starting setter (and it looks like she it), then we may still have a couple of hiccups along the way as everyone gets used to each other. If I'm right about Williamson's tendencies, I think Van Hook is going to get a lot of court time over the next four years, and will win a couple of awards along the way (Ala Jessen & Jurgens).

Kansas City beat Missouri State in 5 sets last night, so they are now 4-0. MSU was a decent opponent, picked 7th out of 12 in the MVC. I think this shows some progress for KC. Maybe they will finish higher than 7th - maybe around 5th? could bump out UND or Denver from the 6-team SLT tournament.... I guess we will see.
My updated mid-week guess at final rankings (previous rank):
1. USD (1) 2. NDSU (3) /\
3. Omaha (2) \/ 4. SDSU (5) /\ 5. KC (7) /\ 6. Denver (6)
7. UND (4) \/ 8. UST (8) 9. ORU (9)
so basically this is me agreeing more with the preseason official rankings, and swapping KC with UND.

Comments:Overall it's pretty early to read too much into stat lines or win-loss records. Some teams have brutal schedules, like Omaha. Some have very soft schedules like Kansas City. I do think that The Roos will be better than their predicted 7th place, but how much better remains to be seen. I could see anywhere from 3rd to 5th at this point, which would exceed expectations. For now, they have taken care of business, and are flexing their muscles... Both USD and Omaha have under-performed at times, but I think a lot of that is attributed to breaking in new starting setters. By the time conference play begins, I'd expect both teams to be more consistent. ORU is bad as advertised. UND and SDSU have struggled more than I was expecting in the W/L column, but the Jacks have some individual numbers that look good.

Comments:Well, the non-conference season is over, and even with the unbalanced schedules, I think the unofficial RPI rankings from Figstats seems about right, with the top 4 teams of USD, NDSU, KC and Omaha forming a top-tier. I still think the Roos are a little over-rated with their very weak non-con Schedule, and Omaha underrated.... but that remains to be seen. Certainly KC or UST have to be in the early running for "most improved" program. I'm honestly a little shocked UND and SDSU have started off so poorly, but I have heard there has been some illness issues with the Jacks' roster. Another thing I'm interested in is to see how many Roos players will remain in the top of statistical categories through conference play? And will St Thomas experience their first Summit Tournament this year? The first week of conference play starts out with a bang, with a re-match of the conference championship. Coyotes @ Mavericks. When will the Mavs' schedule finally lighten up a little? Not this week, unfortunately. Frustrating for them...
