SDSU with a RPI of 330 (out of 344 teams) is surprising, sick players or not. Crystal Burk graduating was a huge loss for the Bunnies.

* #20 in NCAA Comments:There were a few surprises in the first weekend of conference play! Most of it involves the progress of team "rebuilds" of which there are several in the conference. Teams that pulled a Coach Prime "Do you believe now?":Kansas City - looking like they are not paper tigers after all (were picked #7 preseason) Omaha - looking like they can overcome their setter adversities, and have some serious firepower in the front row. Denver - looking like they have suddenly jumped right back into the mix, after a tough non-con (picked #6 preseason) SDSU - After a horrible non-con against a bad schedule, suddenly they look like they were supposed to. Top-tier teams that suddenly look beatable:South Dakota - after a 5-win non-con streak that had the Yotes looking like things were coming together... an error-filled, out-of-system nightmare at Baxter Arena. NDSU - Still look solid, but the 3-set loss to Denver was unexpected. I'm now seeing what looks like a 5-man race for the title, with some very competitive matches on the horizon. I still think the Yotes and Mavs are the teams with the highest ceilings and most talent, but both of them need to prove they can be consistent with passing and setting, and keeping their offenses in-system. I think they will, by tournament time.

New interview with Denver 1st-year coach Megan Pendergast:
On mid-major vs high-major VB today: "...at the end of the day, system volleyball is system volleyball. (the difference) will come into play in the size factor and the general physicality at the net, but I think you see across the country, more and more mid-majors are causing havoc in the rankings, causing havoc in the NCAA tournament. Just because they're playing really good volleyball. That's what we're trying to do here at Denver. Just play really good system volleyball."
On how you have dealt with adversity (Coach turnover, roster turnover, early struggles) "...The recruiting this Summer was busy... A lot of adversity, but a lot of buy-in, though. Everyone that's come here has been all-in, all-gas... I think because this team has faced so much adversity and ups and downs the past few years, (since Covid, really), they're prepared for anything.... For me I've just come in and given clear direction. 'this is where we're going, It's gonna work'.... Amazing leadership from Gianna Bartalo, Ryan Wilkins, and the returners..."
On Cadi Boyer: "Cadi is helping our team tremendously offensively, … A lot of the work is getting done before she puts on the uniform, before she steps out on the court. She's putting in the time, the work, being conscientious about how she talks to her teammates, and the younger athletes on the team... learning when to push, when to take ownership... I'm more impressed with her maturity than anything else..."

* #23 in NCAA Comments:So far the top-5 teams have stayed that way, but not without some close matches. Kansas City continues to shock the conference with solid play, staying undefeated despite having to go to Omaha and Vermillion. Until proven otherwise, they are the clear front-runner. Omaha and South Dakota have had some ups and downs, but remain in the hunt for a conference title. South Dakota's convincing loss to KC and convincing win over Denver were night and day matches, while Omaha has played all opponents closely, including North Dakota, but has come out on top of those close matches. Both teams will only go as far as their setters take them. Denver and NDSU are solid enough to stay in the top tier, and could move up fairly easily. I see three teams vying for that last 6-seed tournament spot; North Dakota, SDSU and St Thomas. Right now UND looks the best from that group. ORU is still looking like the worst. While the conference has a lot of parity, and there will be upsets, ... right now someone needs to knock off the Roos if they want to contend for the regular season title...

* #31 in NCAA ** #29 in NCAA Comments:Well... Someone knocked off the Roos. Denver took down KC in 5 sets, to knock them back into 3rd place and a half-game outside of first. Denver and Omaha currently lead the conference at 5-1 each, but there is still plenty of time for almost any team to be in the conversation for a regular season title. games back from 1st place, and games left: team | w/l | games back | games left | Denver | 5-1 | 0.0 | 10 | Omaha | 5-1 | 0.0 | 10 | Kansas City | 4-1 | 0.5 | 11 | South Dakota | 3-2 | 1.5 | 11 | NDSU | 3-3

| 4.5 | 11 |
Realistically, I don't see any of the bottom 3 teams (4 or 5 losses) vying for a regular-season conference title, but they certainly could still be in the Summit Tournament conversation. The rankings are still very much up in the air, with lots of opportunity for teams to move up and down. The hungriest team will end up on top. Who wants it the most?. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

* #33 in NCAA ** #26 in NCAA Comments:Well... We've reached the half-way point in conference play, and this is the point where it's going to start getting harder to move up or down in the rankings. The top 3 of Omaha, KC and Denver are only one game apart - Omaha has the pole position for the regular-season title, but right now it's still a three-legged race. The middle 2 of USD and NDSU could go either way. Either team could break into the top or bottom tier. The Yotes have been playing much better lately, but just missed a chance to take down the Roos in KC. The bottom 4 of UND, SDSU, ORU and UST are all just a game apart of each other, so 6th place (the last spot for the conference tourney) is still very much up for grabs. games back from 1st place, and games left: # | team | w/l | games back | games left | 1 | Omaha | 7-1 | 0.0 | 8 | 2 | Kansas City | 6-1 | 0.5 | 9 | 3 | Denver | 6-2 | 1.0 | 8 |

While we were all focused on the outcomes of the USD/ISU and SDSU/SIU games the jacks did us a HUGE favor in defeating the Roos in 5 sets. The Summit is much more competitive this year and is heating up right before tournament time.

* #34 in NCAA **#33 in NCAA *** #25 in NCAA Comments:Upsets are happening! but the order of the standings still isn't changing much. #4 USD took down #1 Omaha #6 SDSU took down #2 Kansas City #9 St Thomas took down #5 NDSU The top 5 of Omaha, KC, Denver, South Dakota and NDSU are all only a total of 2.5 games apart - Omaha still has the pole position for now, but the gaps in this group are narrowing, with USD and NDSU merging the middle tier with the upper one. Despite the closeness of the top-5, a top-3 RPI group is forming with USD, Omaha and KC. We will see if that group can also pull away in the standings.... The bottom 4 of UND, SDSU, ORU and UST are now a little more ordered, with a total of 3 games separating 6th from 9th place. We are starting to see some upset wins over top-tier teams, but at this point they are all 4 fighting to get into the Summit Tournament (only 6 teams make it). games back from 1st place, and games left: # | team | w/l | games back | games left | 1 | Omaha | 9-2 | 0.0 | 5^ | 2 | Kansas City | 7-2 | 1 | 7 | 3 | Denver | 7-3 | 1.5 | 6 | 4 | South Dakota | 6-3 | 2 | 7 | 5 | NDSU | 6-4

Upsets have become the normal thing. All I know is, this Summit League Tournament is gonna be WILD The Bison be stampeding into the home stretch like:

To be clear: USD, even at 5th in the conference race... is still not out of contention for the conference title! We have 5 matches left and will be favored in at least four of them (maybe all 5):
Here's the remaining schedule with Massey predictions: W 3-0 @ St Thomas W 3-0 vs UND (Sat Nov 4 2PM) ..................Football @ SIU 1PM W 3-0 vs ORU (Thu Nov 9 6PM) W 3-1 vs NDSU (Sat Nov 11 4PM) ..........Home Football vs UND @ Noon W 3-1 @ SDSU
I'm not naïve enough to take Massey predictions at face value. The Bison and Jacks in particular are playing much better now than earlier in the season. Both of those matches will be wars. We will need a big crowd on November 11 to go to both the Football game vs the Hawks and the VB match following it. Nice job for the AD or coaches in scheduling that one!
Let's finish the season strong, and take back the regular season title so we can host again next year! Go Yotes!

*= no tiebreaker projection My first picks has NDSU beating USD, and the second is the reverse. So basically that match would be for a first-round BYE in my mind. Lots of impactful matches left.... especially Omaha's remaining matches. Denver has the easiest remaining schedule, followed by USD. In my mind, if we win out we are very likely to get a first-round BYE, and if Omaha stubs their toe along the way we could still get first. Zero room for error.

*= no tiebreaker projection made $ = championship clinched ^^ = BYE clinched ^ = SLT clinched x = disqualified from SLT Comments: 1. So the top-5 teams have now clinched Summit League Tournament spots, but any of that group can still win the regular-season title, with Omaha and Denver in control of their own fates. 2. Any of the bottom-4 can still make the SLT, but SDSU has a strong lead for that spot. 3. The Summit standings shows Denver listed before Omaha. This is only due to overall record, which is NOT how tiebreakers are resolved. Omaha has the Head-to-Head edge right now. Of course, if there was a tie for first at the end of the season, both teams could clam a co-championship... but the tie winner would get the 1-seed and hosting privileges the following season. This tie scenario has actually happened 3 times in the Summit League over the last 13 Years: Ft Wayne/NDSU (2010), Denver/IUPUI (2014), Denver/South Dakota (2016) 4. So the ideal situation for USD is to win out, and have an unexpected upset loss or two for Omaha and Denver
