Tommies coaches are putting on a display of clock manipulation and just defending this game to a halt. We should hire these guys. Seriously. Good coaching this first half. He was on my short list when we were surely moving on from Nielsen last November.

This game was fine. Can't be mad or happy. Was hoping to be impressed, but not the case.

I wouldn’t read too much into this game. We clearly struggled to run the ball, but we were pretty obvious with our intentions to run and stubbornly stuck with it against a team who was never going to score on us. I think the game plan against better teams will be to target Bell and Martens a combined 20+ times and use the pass to set up the run.
The defense can keep us in every game we play this year.
The Dome’s atmosphere was not great. We lack terribly in the fan engagement category.

From a fan experience perspective, this wasn't a game I would have wanted any first timers at.

When I first pulled in, I thought, "No worries. This is going to be a good crowd". Problem is too many stayed outside partying which seems to be a common theme at many of our games. I think some schools close off tailgating shortly before or at the start of the game to encourage people to go inside, but I imagine that would just infuriate our crowd.

They used to not let you back in the dome after halftime. Everyone knew it, but still decided to just go drink in the parking lot for the rest of the game. There is only one true solution and that is to put an exciting product on the field. Nobody was excited to watch the coyotes try to establish an inside run game against a team we should have put 55 points on, myself included. You can improve the game day experience all you want, but that's not going to have any measurable effect on attendance or fan engagement.

This game was fine. Can't be mad or happy. Was hoping to be impressed, but not the case. I was impressed with St. Thomas - they had a lot more size and speed than you typically see from a Pioneer League team. And obviously well coached.

St. Thomas is already dominating - they went undefeated last year in the Pioneer league. They are a solid team. Very disappointing first half for the USD offense - especially the OL. The USD Defense looked like they should against a Pioneer league opponent. I would complain about the crowd, but that has been beaten to death already. Casual fans won’t show up until the team builds a multi-year reputation of being a real MVFC top contender. Until then, the players better be ready to bring their own energy for any non SDSU or D Days games.

I went outside at halftime and missed the first couple minutes of the second half. There were many groups of people who were staying outside. One group was watching the Iowa-Iowa St game and didn't seem aware they were a few feet from a football game in the Dome. Absolutely bonkers to me that someone is paying a lot of money for these tailgate spots only to avoid going to the game.

Offense line has some young players they need to improve as our running game looked unimpressive. Nate Thomas looked good as he will get more carries as we get into conference play. I would have liked to see our backup Quarterback play as he is more of a runner. Defense looks solid. I not sure about our kicking yet

Our offense, and OL, looked a whole lot better to me when we were under center. The OL cannot move anyone from their shotgun formations.

Wow, I get blasted for calling out pretty obvious defensive and offensive inadequacies after the Missouri game that needed to be addressed or corrected before the next game. But, after the St Thomas game, it’s open season for everyone. Interesting.
For those that understand what they are seeing, St Thomas wasn’t going to let us run the ball effectively at all. Playing that slant 3-4 defense, they were making it extremely tough on our OL to get off to the inside LBs with all the movement plus dropping the safeties into the run fit too. The offensive coordinator made a really nice adjustment (although a little late in my opinion) hitting some toss perimeter runs out of bunch formations and also did a wonderful job using heavy play-action off those formations to hit Bell for some nice chunk throws and Martens for the TD. The most concerning issue is the lack of ability to throw the outside vertical routes vs man to man coverage. Had one in the first drive and one later in the half that we need to give the WR a chance to make a catch.
Defense played well vs a team that had NO threat offensively and plays bully ball vs lesser talent in the Pioneer League. Won’t work vs MVFC defensive fronts. Plus Nick Gaes was crazy dominant and caused a ton of havoc. Unfortunately, the defense was never ever tested in this one.
And for all those that long for Glen Caruso. If that’s what you want, boring football with no skill players and no team speed. More power to you, definitely not a formula I would want to try and beat the top teams in the MVFC with. NDSU can do it because they attract all the top OL, TE, and DL talent in the region because of their legacy. 2nd and 3rd tier OL and DL talent would not be able to sustain that success in that style. Even SDSU is a balanced offense that attacks you in a multitude of different ways.
