State has some ballers and they earned that win. I really don’t think we were prepared, mentally or physically, for this game though. Kayla has her work cut out for her, whether some want to acknowledge it or not, as state is the bar for the summit league and we are far from their level. We aren't even in the same category anymore. The sad part is, state isn't that good of a team compared to other SL teams we've seen in the past 10 years or so. The Yote teams with Seekamp, Chloe/Sjervs, etc. State teams with Miller and Selland. All those teams would wipe the floor with the state team that's now won 40 straight in the summit league. It's pretty wild how far we've fallen in terms of level of play. This State team can't hold a candle to the Miller/Selland teams from the recent past nor to the Duffy/Lamb squads of the same era. Here's a fun fact: every player I mentioned is a South Dakota high school graduate. Total starters tonight for both teams from South Dakota, zero. Total minutes played from South Dakota graduates 8, zero for SDSU and 8 for USD. Oliva Kieffer from Rapid played 8 minutes. I find that kind of odd given that South Dakota high school girls hoops turns out some really good players.

Is the midrange jumper dead for us? And don’t come at me with analytics. SDSU hit plenty of them tonight. Just think it would help when we can’t get to the rim and our threes are not going. As for the SD players SDSU would have had Timmer with a bunch of minutes had it not been for her injury. Berhens also a SD girl medical redshirting I believe. Next year they will be SD heavy. We currently have four on roster. Not sure why Kieffers minutes have went down. I feel she has done a nice job and does not make many mistakes. Hanson can shoot the three but guessing defense may be what limits her time. I’m not sure what they are doing with Broughton and Mason. Feel they should have been red shirted. You can also include Madison Vlastuin (from Lennox) who was averaging 31 minutes a game for SDSU but she got injured on Thursday night. SDSU will have 7 SD players on their team next year. They had 4 SD players on their team last year but 2+ started some games for them last year.

I hate those injuries regardless of what team they play on about as much as losing.

Also I find it laughable that we truly believe that Coach P was not recruiting players she wanted to build a team with. We need to remember these players were being recruited and had offers from other schools. The only thing that has been a result of Coach P was the loss of Krull and Watson when she left.

This wasn't just a bad game, but rather, it is the reality of where we're at and where we're going to be far past the end of this season. We have plenty to be frustrated about; a motion offense that has absolutely no set plays, starters who consistently under perform, and a total lack of utilizing our strengths. We routinely begin pulling starters from the game after about the first three to four minutes of play which totally disrupts whatever rhythm the team may be trying to establish, and the carousel of personnel on the floor looks different from one minute to the next....literally. The "let's keep everybody happy" substitution pattern shows the lack of leadership from the top. Plain and simple.

The "let's keep everybody happy" substitution pattern shows the lack of leadership from the top. Plain and simple. A motion offense with very little motion. This team is awful in the half court. If we get stops and get into transition we can put points up. But if we are going against a set defense we turn it over at an alarming rate. We then settle for a high volume of contested 3’s. The turnovers and contested 3’s lead to transition offense for the other side and a recipe for an avalanche. It’s why we see so many big leads disappear. We have personnel issue no doubt. We play a ton a players who are good at one thing. Grace and Keifer are about the only ones I’ve seen get to the basket consistently. Our bigs are all stretch bigs and an undersized big who doesn’t shoot but too small to finish. A guard who can’t score or create at all and a high volume 3 point shooter who doesn’t want to defend. Watching last night and the easy looks created by sdsu for their role players is what doesn’t happen for USD. Whether that’s the USD offense or the lack of playmakers…. Probably a combination of both. SDSU has 4 injured girls that would likely also beat us. Injuries were our excuse last year. Also this notion that we will need to hit the portal to get better. First off I don’t believe our scholarship situation is going to allow that to be possible. Next I don’t think mid majors get better through the portal. They need to recruit well, develop talent, and coach! This roster is largely going to be the same next year, it’s time to develop and coach.

I don’t think anybody’s suggesting that Plitzuweit did anything intentionally to hamstring the next coach but it’s pretty obvious she came into a far more blessed situation than she left.

The type of player this team misses the most is a Maddy Krull. A confident leader directing the offense. Grace Larkins would be able to play shooting guard where she would excel as well as moving to the point whenever the dream point guard heads to the bench. As mentioned, our half court game is very poor. One other thing, it should be obvious by now that Natalie M. should be starting and out on the court as much as possible.

Krull would defend the primary ball handler too. She was a bulldog of a player. Worth more than her stats would suggest. Great kid too.

Last night was unacceptable, across the board.
The only positive from the night was getting to listen to Mike Jewett's talk at the Howling Pack pregame gathering. From the point in time it was announced, I felt him joining the staff was a big, big plus for the Yotes. Listening to his comments regarding in-game strategy, player development and recruiting left me with a strong belief that we will soon have Coyote WBB back to the standard it was at for most of the last 2 decades.
