The type of player this team misses the most is a Maddy Krull. A confident leader directing the offense. Grace Larkins would be able to play shooting guard where she would excel as well as moving to the point whenever the dream point guard heads to the bench. As mentioned, our half court game is very poor. One other thing, it should be obvious by now that Natalie M. should be starting and out on the court as much as possible. Actually, I think we have that player on the roster in Joy Bergstrom. Unfortunately, she's been injured and had to have surgery both years she's been here and has yet been able to play. How that translates for her future I have no idea.

Last night was unacceptable, across the board. The only positive from the night was getting to listen to Mike Jewett's talk at the Howling Pack pregame gathering. From the point in time it was announced, I felt him joining the staff was a big, big plus for the Yotes. Listening to his comments regarding in-game strategy, player development and recruiting left me with a strong belief that we will soon have Coyote WBB back to the standard it was at for most of the last 2 decades. Would love for you to share some of that insight. It might help this nagging pessimistic attitude I have lately.

Mike was a good hire . He is a good recruiter. Our 2 girls in the 25 class sound good we have room to add to that class

That was an eminently winnable game last night. They could have easily been up 12-14 at half and then it could have been a very different game. But I was most disappointed by the lack of a response to the big run. Maybe it's just a complete talent issue, but the confidence and fight against SDSU seems to have been lacking in these two games. I commented earlier that I thought there was a big improvement earlier in the year with that, but to get outscored 60-36 in the last 25 minutes on your home floor is a bit demoralizing, especially when the Jacks aren't playing with anywhere near a full deck.
Big-picture wise, the immediate success of this coaching staff was always going to be tied to the returning group since there were so many returning players and incoming commits. If you want to blame the staff for not getting as much as it needs to out of them, that's certainly a possibility. But it's hard for anyone here to know for sure, and I don't see a lot of players that are starters for a Summit League champion. They have a number of good role players that play a lot of munutes.
Demers was benched completely in the second half. She certainly doesn't deserve to start but I can't say that the way they are using her is helping her play better. Grange didn't play at all.
One note - Kayla will not be traveling with the team until she has her child, so Jewett is head coach on Thursday.

Starters 5-24. 22 points (non-Grace 2-16. 9 points) Bench. 12-24 33 points
First game Non-Grace starters 2-15 13 points Bench 8-24. 24 points
4 starters shot a combined 4-31 against SDSU. That alone is the biggest reason we lost both games. But it is not the only reason. Both games, SDSU had wide open three point shots. Colbeck made 3 of four three point shots in the first game. We do not guard her; we dare her to make wide open shots. All game. That didn’t work, as she made 5-7. She was not the only one who had wide open threes, but leaving her alone over and over and over was frustrating. While there was more, those two things killed us.
Maybe we should start Natalie, Carly, Alexi, and Olivia with Grace for the next few games?

Maybe ... but that starting five would have a really hard time guarding anybody.

One note - Kayla will not be traveling with the team until she has her child, so Jewett is head coach on Thursday. This peaks my interest now as we have some tough road games remaining. It’ll be interesting to see if we see a difference in results as a result of a more seasoned coach.
