I think it is awful, but it really doesn't matter, it's a secondary logo. Still, huge swing and miss. AI generated, generic video game logo, all statements I have seen apply.
What I don't understand is that most schools have a primary and secondary logo that complement each other. Iowa - Tigerhawk - Block I, Minnesota - Block M - Gopher, Notre Dame - Interlocking ND - Fighting Irishman. You get the idea. Going by that, USD's primary would be the Paw, secondary is the interlocking SD.
As long as they don't mess with the primary paw logo I really don't care. Mess with the Paw and there will be a revolt.
As for merchandise, I won't buy a single thing with this secondary logo on it. But then, I didn't buy a single thing with the Angry Coyote on it either.

IDK, some people just automatically are against change. Like how much criticism the new "diverging diamond" intersection at 41st and I-29 has been getting in social media... even before anyone had used the finished product. I mean, there is data out there to show that the design results in less accidents, and improved traffic flow... but who cares what traffic engineers say, right? We don't need any of that big-city hippie bullshit intersection crap in Sioux Falls, right? You are very correct that some people are automatically against change. I can remember when the U. logo was dropped. "We are the U! How could we go away from that?!". Nevermind the fact that a ton of other schools identify as "The U" in their area. Adopting the SD branding, and SD pawprint for athletics, was an excellent decision. On the flip side, I think a lot of people will act like this is an excellent change because they will fall in line with anything USD does. We all have a lot invested here (time, money, emotion), and it can be hard to admit when those investments aren't working out.

I'm not sure what to think of it at this point. If it stirs up a little interest in yote sports, and sells some merch, then its all good with me. I'll probably end up with some merch myself. Always a Yote, regardless of what the logo looks like. No more, no less.

It looks fine. Just keep it as a SECONDARY logo.

I mean, what change of sports team logo announced on social media has ever NOT had some pushback and derisive comments? People have nostalgic attachments to logos. Hopefully our marketing staff has a thick skin. I see this as more of a way to modernize the look and appeal to students/ younger fans. I like it, but I can understand other opinions.
Now, the Coyote Paw IS quite popular. I'd hope they would think long and hard before messing with that. At minimum, do an internal poll of boosters/ howling pack members. That kind of thing could have some consequences.
