The university has made remarkable progress in upgrading its athletic facilities over the last 5-8 years. What would be the next step to elevate the athletic department's facilities to the next level?
Just wanted to get some opinions.

Finish the dome. Talk of new softball field and new Tennis courts. A big one would be an indoor track field house. We have the dome but they have to wait for the football season to be over plus then the football team has to wait until track indoor season is over. Money for these projects would need to be raised but I thought they never would raise money for a new pool

This July 26 article in the Mitchell Republic ($$) discusses the future athletic faciities plans. Some highlights: 1) Permanent turf football field within the next 5 years 2) Construct an indoor track and field facility (obviously cannot accomplish #1 without this step) 3) Remodel east side of the Dome - may be done periodically as $$ are raised a) Replace pool with a new weight room for primarily the football team and track & field b) Existing racquetball court will be turned into a permanent space for the golf teams c) Improve bathroom & office areas on the concourse level d) Rework the old suites into a bigger & better media area and maybe some new suites

A dedicated indoor track/training facility would be a big deal. Other than that, I agree that a new softball facility and tennis courts would be nice. The XC team technically uses the field northeast of the dome, but they use the golf course for conference meets due to how rough that field is. Some landscaping and smoothing would create a truly unique offering.

Would like to see USD acquire the property east of the SCSC and south of the current tennis courts (at a reasonable price and not the inflated price the current owner is asking)

With the pool construction now delayed the swim team will use the old pool this year that will delay any dome work but it will happen. Its a waiting game on the property by the tennis courts the family has a mess there and are greedy with the price they want. the city should force a clean up anyway

Put some money in acoustics/PA/imaging/graphics
Love the upgrades in the dome but the sound and visuals are average at best!

20 to 25 million to finish the Dome. Indoor track 25 to 40 million all private funds . Hope our AD can get it done . He said the fieldhouse will have room for the military and tennis courts 2,000 seats and it could be used by our track team, and for Olympic training . We are thinking big

We are beginning a new era of college athletics. I think it will be much different in the future than it was just two years ago. Saying this I think the athletic dept needs to wait and see what the future of athletics looks like before investing millions in facilities. When you have University of Maryland’s football coach say that do not spend money on facilities but instead spend it on nil. My players will change in the janitors closet if they are getting paid. The current model is not sustainable for the power 4. When and if the school can directly pay athletes I could see power 4 investing all their money in a few sports such as football, Mens and Women’s basketball and volleyball. Saying this I could see a time where Big ten school in other sports play in the summit or even drop to division 3. For some sports it does not seem feasible to play in a conference where you need to fly all over the country. I surely do not have any idea what will happen but we need to be strategic on what and where we spend our money. I think many schools will be dropping sports in the future or reducing scholarships
