Maybe it's just me but there was nothing impressive about either SUs offenses yesterday. They lacked scheme and dynamic plays and resorted to lining up and running head on into each other. I mean, it was a hard fought, physical game but it lacked in creativity on offense. I think our OC is much more creative than what I saw from those teams last night and it will show on Saturday. Seemed like they both played pretty close to the vest. They just beat the crap out of each other. I still question whether we can consistently match either team's physicality. I honestly won't believe we can until we prove it. I think they still have an edge up front, albeit it is smaller than it used to be. I echo this statement. USD has not won or been very competitive in Brookings for awhile. I think this is their best shot in some time but the Jacks are very tough especially at home after a loss to the Bison. Their fans will be in it even if some still do not consider us a rival. This is the Yotes true gauge of where they are at. I think they will compete tough and show they are a top team in the country win or lose. Go Yotes!

Yeah, I didn't want to imply that either team is "bad" on offense. I know better than that, they're both very good teams. Just I didn't see much creativity on the O side of the ball. It was an absolute slugfest.

ESPN must have put up a pretty penny to buy this game and the one in Fargo from Midco and WDAY.

I'm never ever ever calling this the "Interstate Series". F that. The Roy C Davis Little Brown Jug would still be a thing, if we weren't bending over for Corporate sponsorship of the series.
I would have been fine with keeping it the "Showdown Series", since it didn't really previously have a name anyway. And there's no reason the LBJ couldn't have co-existed with an all-sports series. Zero reason.
Besides that... it's just bad grammar. This is an "Intra-state" rivalry (within the state), not an "Inter-state" rivalry (between two states)....

ESPN must have put up a pretty penny to buy this game and the one in Fargo from Midco and WDAY. Pretty sure it is part of the new ESPN agreement with the MVFC. Two games per season are nationally televised, and these are the two games they chose this year.

I have started putting my notes together for the upcoming podcast on this game, but the biggest key contributors are going to be USDs safeties. They have get a read on their keys quickly. It can be fairly easy to stop Mason. The safety on the strong side of the formation has to come down hill quickly, while the weakside safety replaces the hole created to cover any potential pop passes that Mason may through. NDSU had a success when they were in a spread formation which could play favorably for USD. We have the best skill players in the nation and we need to take advantage of it.

We need to completely empty the playbook in this one. Winning will require being unpredictable on offense and hitting chunk plays with Adams, Jones-Logan, Bell, Galbreath, Pierre, and Theis. We won’t be able to manage long slow drives. Keep them guessing and on their heels. On defense, it comes down to assignment sound football and toughness. They’re going to want to bully us. We’ll need to put a stop to that immediately. Go Yotes!

I think we're closing the gap size and speed wise on both LOS, but until I see it play out on the field, I'm still worried.

I thought the name connection referred to Interstate 29. The name connection refers to the trophy sponsor, First Interstate Bank. A side benefit and maybe the prime benefit of the competition is raising dollars for Feeding South Dakota.

I thought the name connection referred to Interstate 29. Sure, of course that's true. In addition to the sponsor's name. Double-meaning, and all. I just think it's a poorly thought-out re-name, considering that UND/USD could correctly be called an "Interstate" rivalry. Weak, generic, lame, lazy, whatever. When they came up with the "Showdown Series" name, ... I mean, it's not like we already had a catchy name for it, other than the "State-U" game. So if someone wanted to name it, fine. And "Showdown series" is... OK, I guess. I suppose it grew on me after a decade. But who was clamoring for a re-name? The more times it changes names and sponsors, the less relevant it becomes, IMHO. Hardly a "tradition" of any kind. Now, I DO think that tying it to a worthy fund-raiser like Feeding South Dakota is cool, regardless of the name. But the name still sucks.

I saw somewhere the spread was 6.5. That's smaller than I thought it would be. I know we are better than last year, and State isn't quite as good as they were, but after watching how last years game played out and our playoff game with NDSU I'm a little skeptical that we have totally closed the gap. I'm like several others on here that will believe it when I see it. I certainly expect the game to be more competitive than last year, but I don't know if it's one that will go down to the wire. Our game with Wisconsin does give me some hope though. We stood up to them much better than we did SDSU last year or the NDSU playoff game.

I see on X that Gaes is listed on the depth chart, so maybe he will be good to go.
I’ve also seen a few computer projections (such as SP+) that have SDSU only favored between 2 and 4 points. Massey favors them by two touchdowns, but I just don’t think it is as accurate for football as other sports. I don’t see us winning by a lot, but we could lose by a lot if we’re still not as as strong. We’ll see.

If I were putting money on it I would probably need 13.5, especially in Brookings. I'm just not sold yet on our squad. Wisconsin was the last time that we played a team that is even as remotely physical as the Jacks or Bison. We held up ok in the long run but it took time for us to adjust. My fear is that they jump out to a lead and we are trying to play catch up given the way our defense has started games. It would be really tough. My uneducated hunch about the state of our two programs is that we could probably win 3 out of 10 and they would probably win 7 everything else being equal. I certainly hope we go up there and lay the wood to them, but I would be very surprised if that were the case. I personally don't think the monkey is off our back given the recent history.
