South Dakota 3 FINAL Illinois State 28
Some people will be shocked by this but by examining the history of the team under Ed should we really expect any better.

Not a good day to be a Coyote Hey CF or is it cf, I thought you were a jackfan now, why don't you go back to the bunnyboard and badmouth the program some more. While the Coyotes were playing well and winning you were on the bandwagon. You sir, are a joke.

Glad to have CF back on board, don't always agree with everything he has to say, but the poor road record is frustrating.
Good news is that the Yotes can still accomplish their goals for the season. Their 2 goals were to win the Great West title & be ranked in the top 20 at the end of the season. However, in order to accomplish both goals, they need to win out the rest of the season.
Will be interesting to see how they respond to the first FCS loss of the season.

While the Coyotes were playing well and winning you were on the bandwagon. You sir, are a joke. Am I a Joke or just saying it how it is. You decide that for your self. I don't understand how anyone can defend this performance or the 2-14 FCS road record. That is indefensable. I was the only poster on this board to predict a Yote loss today because I understand how this program is. Am I happy no, am I realistic, yes. Others that predicted a Yote win are either just simply too optimistic, in denial or just don't pay enough attention. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. Fool me 14 times, well decide that one for yourself. So tell me what I have said in this thread that is inacurate or a blatently untrue. Even for the most optimistic fan it's difficult to continue to deny reality. If your expectation is to be a pretty good home team and a very bad road team than I guess you are a happy fan. I don't think what has gone down is good enough when you look at it as a whole and I voice that opinion. I also praise when that is deserved as well. This football team is experienced and there was no reason whatever to lay an egg as large as was the one laid today.

Coyotefan,
I think the only thing that was off was the fact of benching Dante. I haven't been his biggest fan either, but I blame the coaching and offensive line more than I blamed Dante in this game. Another reason is I have heard that Vander Maaten has been spotty with his accuracy, too.
In terms of the rest of the game, you are right. This was the typical USD road game, and unfortunately, it was bound to happen. I thought Illinois State had a good opportunity to win coming into the game. I haven't been overly impressed with the offensive and it was a major weakness today.
The only reason I think Ganious is still seeing significant carries is because he is such a team player and has won over the coaching staff. But Sims should be the starter and has proven it.
Hopefully this was USD's Bills vs. Bengals road game. This was their first big FCS road test of the year and they got it taken to them after a big win last week. If USD can pick itself up after this, well, then this was a growing pain. If this continues to happen, then this is a major concern.

I had to work today so I couldn't follow the coyotes. I just had an opportunity to go through your summary of the game. I didn't read every entry word for word, but thanks.
Some days don't go as well as planned.
Until next week, don.

The idea of benching Dante is an opinion. What does USD have to lose by trying something different at halftime. It's not like the offense could have done much worse. This is the way I look at it. JVM is likely the better passing quarterback. ISU is much more vulerable against the pass. For USD's offense to have sucess they were going to need to pass the ball.
This is the bottom line. This is a win-loss business not a moral victory business. The Yotes are basically fully transitioned with the type of experience they have this year. The Yotes lost this game and it was because of the offense. The offense really hasn't been that great all year other than to run the ball up the gut against over matched defensive lines. In the MVFC the defenses are better and certainly more physical and more difficult to run against.
With this team the more coaching that is involved and the more adjustments that are needed is generally the more this team tends to get beat. USD gets away with alot of things at home that masks some issues that tend to come out in road games. The playcalling, offensive line and quarterbacking have all been issues. The lack of going to Will Powell is just unfathomable to me. I never saw him double teamed that tightly in Vermillion but I can't say I saw the defense against him today so I can't really comment on that.
Here is the problem I see with the offense. There is almost no intermediate passing game or many route running plays that are being utilized. What ever happened to the slant game, down and out game, three step drop game etc. What ever happened to the idea of running out of more formations other than the power I game. The choice to use Ganious in my opion cost USD being down 7-3 vs tieing up the game at 7. We can be all soft and say Ganious deserves this or that but Sims is the man carrying the rock and for whatever reason this has not been happening eventhough has been evident for several games.
The bottom line is that this offense has been out of sync. It's the job of the coaching staff to get it corrected whether that means by Ed, by Wes or whatever. If they want to continue to stay with Warren or Ganious or whatever that is up to them but the bottom line is that the offense has really regressed alot in a year or two's time. I don't see why this offense that has really been struggling in the passing game try a different option. If the backup quarterbacks aren't cutting it then I guess that is a recruiting problem. Either way this team is unprepared or simply just not good enough in road games. That falls squarely on the shoulders of Ed and the reason I have been saying for a good amount of the last year that Ed simply doesn't have the coaching ability to get this team to the level that makes them competitive in the MVFC. The true test of a good team is how they play on the road. That has been an epic fail with this football team.

There are a lot of teams out there that have all of these different offenses that you mentionaed. For these teams to be successful they need a VERY good QB and a lot of talented depth. The teams with average talent look like disorganized messes and are not successful often. Most teams pick a offense stlye and build around that. I was on a team like this in high school. When it did not go well there was nothing else to go to. It is very frustrating but that is the nature of the game.
The road record is a mystery. I have wondered if it was the overall age of the coaching staff. Being in Nebraska during the Solich era and seeing the maturity of the coaching staff makes me wondewr if the U had a more senior staff if the road would be friendlier.
BTW the marching band thing went fine. Thanks for asking:-) UNO's band has been making appearances at games and such around Omaha this season since they don't have a team any more. I can't wait to see them march on the ice now that hockey season has started.

I remember that I genuinely enjoyed watching and listening to them.

Vander Maaten has seen his time this year and there is potential there, but he hasn't been better than Warren. The offense wasn't better under him. If a quarterback hasn't taken the first team reps, then it's difficult to just make the switch at halftime if he hasn't been seeing the defense throughout the week. It's a lot more complicated than just making the switch. I am sure Vander Maaten watched the film and all, but the first team reps are important. Also, who says a redshirt freshman would not have panicked under the pressure that Illinois State brought. I am guessing that would've resulted in a pick or two or three. There is a big difference, plain and simple. This lies on the offensive line and play calling more than anything. Ask Jay Cutler how hard it is to be accurate when you are running for your life all of the time.

We can analyse what happened to death (and we should) but the bottom line is that this team was not ready to play today and rarely plays truley good football on the road. We can argue it's the players, we can argue it's the assistants, we can argue it's whatever we want to argue. The bottom line is the CEO of this company (Ed) is basically responsible for the day to day operations and is responsible for what goes on. He chooses to trott Ganious onto the field and give him carries that should be going to Sims. Heck If we need a change of pace why not see what Noah Pearl can do.
Ed chooses to go with Warren and whether or not it's the right call or not he has to take responsibility for the performance because he has the power to do what he wants to do. If a change isn't made because no backup is worthy enough to go in than that is a recruiting problem that comes back to Ed anyway.
The defense has improved from the D2 days there isn't a whole lot of doubt about that. I would like to see more skill and more consistancy on offense as well. Eventhough I have been hard on certain players I believe the talent is on the roster up and down to win at this level.

And there it was. Coyotes can beat the defending champ and No. 1 ranked team and 22nd ranked team last week and once the first loss comes, it's back to fire to fire Ed.
It's one game. Let's see what happens next. Pretty sure the Yotes are still 4-3, so the sky isn't falling Chicken Little. It could be a lot worse.
I agree that I am still surprised that Ganious is still getting as many carries as he does and I wish Sims would get the full load. Powell needs to be used more, but honestly, from what I have seen and heard, Vander Maaten is not better then Warren. Usually, the redshirt freshman that came from a small Iowa town usually isn't better than the two-year starting senior quarterback.
Sorry, this isn't Western Christian in its beginning years that Vander Maaten is facing, this is a lot tougher competition. He has a lot of potential, but usually redshirt freshmen aren't your ideal starters. Kind of the history of the game.

Sorry but in my last post I did not say Fire Ed, so please don't misquote me. I don't believe in entitlement. I believe a starting spot has to be earned and continue to be earned. I believe playing time has to be earned and has to continue to be earned. As I said before this is not all on Warren but he is also not free of blame in this either.
As far as winning at home that is nice and I gave plenty of praise. If this loss was a one time thing, I would be like OK lets write it off to one bad outing. Unfortunately teams basicall play half their games on the road. Without playing well on the road it's very hard to be a good football team. 2-14 is all that needs to be said. There are many dome teams that play well on the road. NDSU and UNI are good examples.
Why as fans should we "Relax" tonight. I have been told to "Relax" about 10 times after putrid road games. When should I legitimately be able to tell everyone else that the time to "Relax" was last year, 2 years ago, 3 years ago and on and on and on. When are we going to show urgency as a program. When are we going to have one of these bad games and actually lose a gasket over it. Just what are everyone's expectation and when is it panic time. I kind of figured after the Lamar game last year that might be the time and place. I was terribly wrong. Will panic time be at seasons end, after 2 more years, 5 more years. When is that time because I would sure like to know.
I know this much. I don't take losing well. How about you (meaning Coyote Nation)?
