Good luck to him. He is a good guy.
But, I think it's an opportunity to get in someone who understands the athletic side better.
The lack of multiyear contracts for ADs as well as coaches can cut both ways.

I think this time Herbster is the right choice. Not like he was the wrong choice last time, but Sayler was a great hire and him and Herbster were close and with what Herbster learned from Sayler (and prolly vice-versa), I think Herbster would be a great hire as the new AD.
And congrats for Sayler, this is a great move for him and his family and hope he does well at Miami.

You gotta be kidding me. How are we gonna get these facilities built if our AD doesn't stick around to finish out his vision.
Thank goodness we have Herbster there to hold things down, maybe even take over.

Yeah, because Herbster is still around and the funding is 75 percent in place? Herbster was a key right-hand man, so it's not like Sayler left the school high-and-dry.

Sayler is a visionary that didn't exist in Vermillion before he got there. I can't see how anyone would have been able to raise the money how David did for the facility upgrades. It was barely mentioned as a possibility before Sayler's arrival. Sayler should be praised for the work he did at USD. He took a near impossible situation with people that don't think outside the box that is Vermillion and made things happen that were pleansantly surprising.
Saylor got the Yotes into a good conference situation and used USD and the Big Sky as leverage to get into the MVFC. Sayler is a very good administrator but might have lacked in sports knowledge.
What has Herbster really done aside from being a 2nd fiddle. Certainly his sports knowledge hasn't contributed to a successfull athletic department on the fields and courts.
USD needs to do a national search for the best candidate like they did with Sayler. USD tends to have more success than to just hand the job to a pre annointed person. Let's allow the process to play itself out. Assuming the facilities get done we need an AD that is going to keep the accountability with these programs. This year has been very poor so far for on the field performance. It needs to get WAY better.

I tend to agree with CF here. If you are Abbott, I think it is a slap in the face to the alumni to not do your due diligence and conduct a national search. If at the end of that time Abbott believes that Herbster is the right guy, so be it. This is D1, we can't sell ourselves short. I think the world of Herbster, so don't twist what I am saying, but I think it is Abbott's duty to make sure that he has diligently sought to find the best person for the job.

Congrats and thanks to David Sayler. Wish he could have made it one more year but he has raised the bar at USD.
To anyone who may have a connection with Jim Abbott: Make sure he continues to push for the best and brightest recruit as Sayler's replacement.

The University in general seems to make it's best hires when it includes a full pool of applicants instead of getting tunnel vision. Dave Herbster came from a grease fire at UNO before he got to USD. I think he should prove himself at a lower level as an AD before he takes over the top spot at USD. I am not necessarily anti-Herbster I just think the next step for him would be as a D2 AD. He needs to get more proven before I am willing to give him the full job.
Maybe we should focus on someone that is a good administrator but really good at dealing with what is best with the individual programs. Maybe someone that is specifically knowledgable in football and basketball. Alot of improvement is needed in this area.
I would have liked to see Sayler see it out a little bit more with the facility project. Maybe scoop the first shovel of dirt and than he could go on his way with a job well done. Maybe Sayler can come back for the ceremony because of all that he did to make it a reality. I think that would be great.
As for David he always came off as a nice guy and a good family man. I wish the best for him and his family in Ohio. They are lucky to have him.

I don't know if Sayler would have been able to get done all he could without Herbster and credited him a lot. I think both Herbster and Sayler learned from each other. I agree a national search should be done and it will, but there would have to be a slam dunk like Sayler to pass Herbster. Herbster helped out 2 men and one has had a major impact at kent state. To say Herbster hasn't had an effect, well I know he is very popular among big alumni donors....

What the turnover in AD's will probably mean is that most coaches won't have to worry about their jobs for about a year. I think with some of these programs a little bit of spring cleaning wouldn't be such a bad idea. In otherwards cut some of the fat (meaning coaches that are coaching programs that are not getting it done).

Actually with one-year contracts and a new ad only heightens the fact that a coach could get canned. The fall sports are safe, but if a new ad is hired before the end if bball, could be sonething to watch for. Plus, if coaches from the fall season were to get canned, it would've happened by now usually.

The football coach has a seven year contract there, so I am guessing Sayler will end up with some long term security as well. Hard to turn that down.
