There are some huge league games tonight and Saturday that could shake up the ultimate seeding for the Summit League Tournament. Here are the current standings:
Western Illinois 10-2 18-5 NDSU 10-3 19-6 SDSU 10-3 19-7 Oakland 8-4 13-13 Omaha 6-8 9-18 South Dakota 4-8 8-16 Kansas City 4-8 7-19 Fort Wayne 3-9 10-16 IUPUI 1-11 6-20
WIU sits atop the standings, but they play @ NDSU tonight and @ SDSU on Saturday. Huge three days for the Leathernecks. They finish the season hosting UMKC and USD. NDSU is sitting pretty for a one or two seed if they top WIU. They will have only two remaining league games, against IUPUI and Omaha. SDSU hosts IUPUI tonight, WIU Saturday, and finishes the league schedule against Omaha. Oakland has one five straight games since we blew them out, including wins against WIU, SDSU and NDSU. Suffice it to say they're playing inspired basketball, and they still have a shot at grabbing a two seed.
I have no idea why all of the standings seem to list us ahead of UMKC, as I assume they own the tie-breaker by virtue of their head-to-head season sweep. In any event, given the uncertainty in the top of the standings, I'm less concerned about our seeding than I am our momentum and quality of play leading into the tournament (which, I guess, lends itself to higher seeding). The one team I absolutely want to avoid in the first round is NDSU. There are scenarios that could drop NDSU to a four seed by season's end, and I still think we stand a good shot at landing the five seed. An NDSU loss to WIU and an Oakland win tonight would bring that scenario closer to reality, though other pieces would need to fall into place. Bottom line: I'm a Coyote/Bison fan this evening.

Not sure who USD has to finish up the season, but right now I think where they are at is about the type of team they are right now. Needed this win against a good Oakland squad at home tonight.

Not sure who USD has to finish up the season, but right now I think where they are at is about the type of team they are right now. Needed this win against a good Oakland squad at home tonight. I had the privilege of sitting close to the action last night. We had an opportunity served up to us when Bader picked up his third foul with over 11 minutes remaining. I'm pretty sure he didn't reenter the game until the second half, and when he did, he seemed to play with a bit of caution. Today's Argus game story understates the final seconds of the game. After Oakland connected on one of two free throws to take a late one-point lead, a timeout was called with four seconds on the clock. We drew something up that allowed Myles to drive the length of the floor and get a decent look at a makeable runner in the lane. It certainly wasn't throwing up a prayer. In any event, another close, frustrating loss. I wasn't disappointed in our effort. Bos is becoming my favorite player to watch, and he'll be an important piece on next year's team (which I'm very excited about). As I've mentioned before, I'm now less concerned with seeding than I am confidence and quality of play. Last night's Summit League results shook up projected seeding. If I had to guess how everything will play out, I’d say WIU loses Saturday @ SDSU, but wins out the remainder of the season, locking SDSU in at 1 and WIU in at 2. If NDSU and Oakland both win out, Oakland locks in the 3 (by virtue of tie-breaker rules) and NDSU lands at 4. NDSU’s remaining conference schedule is soft. Oakland may face a challenge @ IPFW, so I wouldn’t consider the Grizz a lock for the 3 spot. IUPUI has already wrapped up the 8 seed. IPFW, USD and UMKC all have 4-9 conference records. USD hosts IPFW on Saturday and would own the tiebreaker should the teams split the season series. UMKC owns the tiebreaker with USD. UMKC and IPFW split their season series, and their tiebreaker is very much up in the air. In fact, I think both teams will finish the season getting swept by NDSU, SDSU, WIU and Oakland, in which case USD, I believe, becomes their tiebreaker. Or does Omaha count, though not tournament eligible? I have no idea. This is what I predict: Day 1: SDSU(1) vs. IUPUI(8); WIU(2) vs. UMKC(7) Day 2: Oakland(3) vs. IPFW(6); NDSU(4) vs. USD(5) I would really hate this. With Braun, NDSU is the best team in the conference. If USD had a choice in the matter, I’d rather they fall to a 6 or 7 seed, which might happen anyway. One last, semi-related note: I trust our guys now, and in the future, will not fall into the mindset that "All we have to do is finish top-eight to make the Summit League Tournament." The Summit League RPI is respectable. We're adding Denver, which is a really, really solid program. If our goal is to make the Big Dance, we need to appreciate the fact that, coming from a low mid-major conference, a pedestrian win-loss record is a one-way ticket to a virtually unwinnable (and embarrassing) first-round game. Okay, second semi-related, beating-a-dead-horse note: Our band is great. Our student section is pathetic. No energy. No creativity. Plain embarrassing. Basketball players are not robots. They feed off the crowd, and they've said as much. The students (and absent fans) deserve part of the blame for the Oakland loss (among others).

I was there tonight as well as Thursday. The only word that describes the effort we put forth is awful. The student section is awful. The adult fans that showed up both nights were awful. The only positive sector is the band. You guys and gls are outstanding.
Even the senior presentations were awful. As well as the recognition of our gals 08 basketball team and the 58 men's national championship teams. No film clip of the women at all. You have got to be kidding me. Recognize a team from 5 years ago and show no film. Hell, they didn't even know where to stand or go. That was Mickey Mouse, and I was embarrassed for them. They deserved better.
The senior awards were given to the players in the corner of the gym? WTF? Why not half court? And our sound system, trying to hear what Boots had to say reminded me of Charlie Brown cartoons where they just mumble.
There is one word that describes our program and fan base right now, and that word is APATHETIC.

On a positive note, at least next year we will have a roster spot open that has been wasted the last four years.

Going with Herbster as the AD is an easy choice but the wrong one if you want change. All the things you pointed out in your post really piss me off and is embarrassing. We need an AD staff that has the energy and passion for the job and isn't going to let those organizational screw ups happen.

You might find it interesting to see the video of the SDSU men's senior night presentations for Nate and Tony. Here is a link to TV's video of it. It was a well done and emotional event held immediately after the game was over. It is about the third video down the page. terryvandrovec.tumblr.com/

Wow thanks for posting that. That was pretty amazing. That made the one in Vermillion look terrible! It was pretty neat having it at the end of the game and still seeing a full house. Of course they couldn't do that in Vermillion because the few people that would still be there would be racing out the door. It is crazy with the attendance numbers in Vermillion how many people have to leave early or immediately to, "beat the rush."

I attended Thursday and Saturday. We looked dreadful Saturday. I will give IPFW some credit; they looked pretty good for a team with a 4-9 conference mark. That does not excuse our performance.
If everything plays out as it should on paper, we appear headed for the seventh seed, which means, likely, a Summit League Tourney date with Western Illinois. They are also our last opponent on March 2nd, exactly one week before we would play them in the SLT. The silver lining, I guess, is that a first-round upset earns you a day off before the second round. It would be a tall order, but we'd have a decided home-court advantage with the backing of our own fans and, presumably, some State fans hoping to see us knock off a dangerous opponent. I'm certainly getting ahead of myself, but I'm almost hopeful this is how things play out. As I've said before, NDSU is the last team I want to play opening round, assuming Braun is healthy.
Gorabbits, thanks for posting the senior night video. I will not miss Nate Wolters. He is a special player, perhaps of the once-in-a-lifetime variety. It is not often a team is placed in semi-rebuilding mode after graduating only two players, but that's my take on the Jacks program next year. Wolters leaves a huge void. I know they are high on Bittle, but I just don't see how SDSU doesn't take a considerable step back next season.
Regarding attendance, production, atmosphere, etc.: Build. The. Arena. Donate to the project. I don't like it when people say we need a "new" basketball arena; it implies that we already play in a basketball arena. The Dome, for basketball, hurts recruiting, fan experience, everything. I am confident the arena will elevate our program.

I know they are high on Bittle, but I just don't see how SDSU doesn't take a considerable step back next season. You are correct that Nate and Tony will be hard to replace. Nate is not only a once in a life time player for SDSU but if he continues his current averages for points, rebounds and assists, he will become the only player in NCAA history to average over 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for two seasons since the NCAA began keeping records on assists. But the cupboard isn't bare. In addition to Bittle, there are three red shirts, 6 6 Matt Donlan, 6 2 Joshua White and 6 10 Connor Devine. There are also four incoming freshmen. One of those, Anders Broman holds the Minnesota high school career scoring record and is averaging over 40points a game at last check. Add to that Lane Severyn from Pierre, who was the leading scorer in SD high schools this year at last check, Skyler Flatten from Clark Willow Lake who is the only McDonalds All American nominee from South Dakota and Logan Doyle from Alexandria MN who some think is the best of the group. The potential is certainly therefore for attaining our current level or even moving up a step in the not too distant future.

I don't get to the Dome often, however, can you clarify the Senior Night ceremony for me, I see on the goyotes.com site, the Seniors being honored at mid-court, yet some are saying it was done at the corner of the gym?

I don't get to the Dome often, however, can you clarify the Senior Night ceremony for me, I see on the goyotes.com site, the Seniors being honored at mid-court, yet some are saying it was done at the corner of the gym? As you know, the men's bench is on the nortwest corner of the floor. Behind the men's bench are bleacher seats. The first senior award went to Myles, and his mom and dad were urging behind the bench and came to the floor on the NW corner. As the p.a. system was telling of Jevols accomplishments, and his story (through a horrific sound system that no one could understand) they handed him his wall hanging and people cheered but no one other than those close to that area of the gym saw what it was, he parents reaction, etc. Jordan Boots was next, and despite what people's opinion of him as a player is, the kid did give USD I believe 5 years of his life, and certainly he was entitled to his moment in time. Again, Jordan, Dave, and Peggy Boots congregated in that corner. Finally realizing it didn't go well, they then strode to center court where the crowd then acknowledged them. That's the photo you see. Make sense?
