UC Davis fan web site at aggiesportstalk.yuku.com/forums/63/Aggie-Football/Aggie-Football. I was surprised my password still worked from when we were in the Great West together. The big excitement at UC Davis is the addition of a real D1 coach who was responsible for the rushing game at Cal. He's also a superb recruiter. Most of the rest of the team carries over.

I will pick the Aggies 23-20
If the Yotes win it will be 27-14
A one score game goes to the westerners.

Let's have a great turnout here! Don't want to overemphasize one game, but considering the brutal schedule, getting off to a good start is imperative with 3 road games following the home opener. GO YOTES!

Hello Yote Nation. Chiming in non-sarcastically this time.
Looking forward to a good game. It's a whole new ballgame in Davis right now, the coaching staff has near completely been turned over with new head coach Ron Gould. He is a fire breathing football teacher and his staff have taken on his personality. The Aggie practices are night and day from the old guard (Bob Biggs staff), much, much more intensity and tempo.
The big thing right now is the relative youth, and concern for the depth of the offensive line. With that in mind there is also a QB battle going on. The 4th year player Randy Wright (who started in Vermillion in 2011, fumbling twice and threw 2 picks) is the incumbent, but obviously, he has a track record of losing at the FCS level. Ron Gould, as was mentioned earlier in the thread, is a hell of a recruiter...not just from high schools but with JC and DI transfers. He has plucked a Boise State Bronco, who played his high school ball near to Davis in Rocklin. The kids' name is Jimmy Laughrea, and some of us flat out hope he starts immediately. The main thing about Laughrea that is good is his ability to extend the play, he also possesses a cannon...with touch...all QBs recruited and coached under Chris Petersen at Boise have these traits and he has demonstrated them thus far. Only knock on the kid is that he is essentially new to the program, barely been in Davis for a few months, so while he is probably more talented than Wright, he may be behind the curve a tad in terms of the playbook.

Both teams have been hit by the injury bug, and both teams will rely on youth. But it is the Aggies with a rookie head coach and young assistants versus a veteran staff. The school failed to land two marquee coaches, so Gould got a *very* late recruiting start. His recruiting class is decent, and will help the team - in 2015.
Both teams also feature a young backfield. But it is QB Josh Vander Maten who holds the clear edge in experience, mobility, and football IQ: look for the Coyote offense to have a big day. Davis has yet to chose a starting QB. One has gone backward in production, a second is still recovering from an injury, and the third is still learning the playbook. Rumors from my NorCal sources say the Ags may start a promising Frosh QB with a live arm.
RB-by-Committee - Buma, Roberts, Gardner and Cooke - are key for the Coyotes. Only one has to get hot. It could be a long day for Davis if special teams falter, especially given that Davis owed at least 2 wins last year to their former exceptional kicker, Colton Schmidt. The recent low turnout at the former Blue-Gold scrimmage reveals what the town already knows – this is rebuilding year 1.
Final: 30-10 Coyotes

The recent low turnout at the former Blue-Gold scrimmage reveals what the town already knows – this is rebuilding year 1. Final: 30-10 Coyotes Okay...whoever these "marquee" coaches are, the right man got the right job in the end. (?) Gould helped steer some outstanding freshman RBs into the program, and one or more of them will likely play. Clear edge in experience at QB, Randy Wright, for all his faults has been starting for 3 years including experience as a starter vs. Cal, a win vs. San Jose State, 2 wins vs. Cal Poly and a 3-0 record vs. Sac State. That's roughly 33 starts to who knows how many Vander Maten has. Though Wright might not even start, it seems like a bad argument. Nobody in the QB field is recovering from injury. Special Teams is not only encouraged but emphasized under the new regime, the freshman kicker was hitting FGs from 45+ under team duress recently, that's out in the open, with wind, not in a dome. Also, Colton Schmidt was primarily a punter, not a kicker, he kicked off plenty during his time at Davis however. Also, the recent low turnout during the Blue-Gold scrimmage is not uncommon at all. People have things to do in Northern California...Aggie grads are doctors, engineers, veterinarians, policy makers, wine makers, beer makers, CEOs...they have lives away from their former college town and spread their joy and knowledge worldwide. On gameday however, you can bet the stands will be packed at Aggie stadium. Any more insight onto a team that is 1650 miles away from you? I couldn't tell you the first thing about the Coyote squad this season...just that they better be ready for a dogfight when the Gould era dawns in Vermillion this Saturday.
