This will be a great opportunity for the Yotes. My guess is UNI (after two tough losses) will be extra pissed off and ready to make a statement. Hopefully USD will make their own statement.
Defense just needs to play like they have. Even with a great defensive effort by the Yotes, I would think UNI will score in the 24-28 range on the defense. The offense will have to open it up and score.
Hope the Yotes go into the game focused but loose, with a nothing to lose attitude. The UNI defense will be the strongest that USD has faced this year. Will have to let Earl sling it around to open the run. Hope the coaches just go full throttle on this one versus playing conservatively to prevent a blow out.
Really looking forward to it!

I would be curious to hear from the Bison fans or any others that have watched UNI this year to hear their impressions of UNI? Strengths / weaknesses etc.

Great to be back at .500 now and starting to get my voice back after Saturday's game. There were some absolutely horrible calls by the back judge and others against Indiana State, but at the end of the day it thankfully didn't matter.
Definitely need to clean up the turn-over issues to have a chance in this one against the Panthers. The two most painful turnovers were the INTs in the end-zone. The first pick looked to be a repeat of the 2 point conversion play call from the win against Missouri State. It wasn't there on Saturday and was totally forced. Better to have tucked the ball and run at that point. The second was a totally missed check down as there was a wide open receiver waiting for a first down catch instead of throwing to a well-covered WR in the end-zone. Those two picks were mistakes from a QB making only his second start and that will improve week to week.
The first half we took some nice shots down field and as previously noted, that really opened up the run for the remainder of the game. The offense has a new dimension now with JVM in at WR given his ability not only to catch the ball, but also to run it and throw it down the field. Saw some new offensive wrinkles that weren't there against Missouri State and hoping to see more of those on Saturday. The offensive line is really starting to come together to create some nice holes for the run and create a clean pocket to give Earl some time to throw a good ball.
Scouting UNI, they are lead by running back David Johnson, who is averaging 7.3 yards a carry on 97 attempts for a net yardage through 6 games of 710 yards. That is impressive. Sawyer Kollmorgen completes 62% of his passes at QB and averages 197 yards a game through the air. Chad Owens, Kevin Vereen and David Johnson lead the Panthers in catching. All 3 have played in 6 games and combined they account for 81 catches for 9 touchdowns and 1019 yards. Vereen is averaging 16.5 yards a catch and has 465 yards for UNI, including their longest reception of 52 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball Jake Farley, the son of UNI coach Mark Farley, is out I believe. He was recently injured and if memory serves me correctly had to have surgery after the NDSU game, but he leads the team with 23 tackles and 33 assists for a total of 56 tackles. Gacke, Williams, Kilfoy, Hall, & Tim have 45,43, 38, 37, and 31 tackles on the season respectively. UNI always has a solid line, seemingly one or two all-world linebackers and a speedy corner or two who can really impact plays. This is the first time in recent memory USD will be playing them with a defense that can do everything they can, if not better.
This will not be the same Coyote team UNI is used to facing and should be an interesting matchup. If the Yotes take care of the ball and we can limit stupid penalties, turnovers, and special teams miscues we have a puncher's chance in this one.

I would be curious to hear from the Bison fans or any others that have watched UNI this year to hear their impressions of UNI? Strengths / weaknesses etc. UNI came into Fargo firing on all cylinders a few weeks ago. They went right at the Bison but wore out in the 4th quarter. Their MLB (Farley) broke his leg during the game and Johnson had a hip pointer also. I think the Johnson injury hampered his play against SIU. I suspect it will not be healed up anytime soon. Our RB (Crocket) had a hip pointer last year and it didn't fully heal until the end of the season. I have not seen USD play this year but there must be obvious improvement over last year with the 2 conference wins so far. At the beginning of the season I would have said UNI would have rolled in this game but not now. USD needs to get a road win to boost their confidence and this is the perfect game to do it. UNI is banged up and can definitely be beat. Now can the Coyotes do it? They run a 3-4 defense with a very good D-line. They gave the Bison some trouble in the game a few weeks ago but the Bison did have success running straight up the middle and Jensen also had success running. If your QB can run it will be a definite advantage. The Coyote O-Line needs to play well in order to get a W. On offense they run a spread and have very good receivers. Vereen burned M Williams a couple of times in our game....he is fast and good hands. When DJ is healthy he is probably the best overall RB in the FCS running/receiving. If he is not healthy then that hampers their offense. Kollmorgen is a good QB with a quick release. Their O-line did a fairly good job against the Bison but he really gets the ball out of his hand quick. The Coyotes defense needs to bring its A game this week. When the Bison sat back in their Tampa-2 zone, Kollmorgen picked them apart but when they brought pressure he made some mistakes. I'm sure the Coyote coaching staff will see this and try to bring pressure from different angles to keep them off balance. Does USD still run a 3-4? If so, that could be an advantage at disguising the blitz and where it is coming from. They should line up Starr all over the place and make UNI account for where he is at on every play....that will open up a lane for another guy to blitz and make plays. Like I said, a month ago I would have predicted a UNI romp in this game but it could be a W for the Coyotes if they go in and smack them in the mouth and do not make mistakes like turnovers. With 2 losses, UNI will not want a 3rd. USD is looking for their 1st conference road win. Has the makings of a good game.

bisoninnwmn - thanks for the thorough insight.
Yes - USD is still running the 3-4 and so far has shown to be much improved. Not sure if USD has the depth and physicality yet for this UNI squad. The special teams miscues and an inexperienced QB will have to play the their best game of the year to date.
this will be a interesting game and USD needs to go in swinging for the knockout.
The Bison v Saluki game should be a slugfest as well. Fun conference.

UNI 35 USD 13
USD has shown signs of promise in the dome. I think this team is too young, too inexperienced, and too mistake prone to compete with the top tier in this conference on the road. The top 3-4 teams in the conference are on a different level right now. I think the injuries on their side may help us, and if our D plays well we could hang around. However, in the end, too much fire power from UNI, and too many mistakes by the yotes (blown coverage, special teams errors, int) will create too big of a hole for the yotes to get a road W. Maybe Earl and the offense will prove me wrong, but I suspect UNI by 10+.

Well, here we go. Second half of the season, six games that may be tougher to win than the six we already played. We have been improving throughout the season, and we currently look capable of pulling out a couple more games.
Our defense has been top notch. This week we will see how much they've benefited from the weak schedule. We'll know if the defense is for real if they keep up with the stingy averages they've allowed thus far this season. I hope that Bryant is back for the game, I was told the reason he left the game against ISU was a concussion. We're going to need all the help we can possibly get for this game.
UNI looks vulnerable, SIU made them bleed. While SIU barely won in overtime, they dominated the box score. Reminiscent of the last two games we had, squeaking out a win that should have easily been in hand. UNI got only 9 first downs, with 198 passing and 37 rushing yards. They scored on a pick 6, a 52 yard TD pass, and finally had a sustained drive to set up a 30 yard field goal. We have no common opponents, but I have to believe that our defense is very capable of shutting down UNI after last week's performance.
Whether or not we win this game comes down to offense and special teams. If we can gain 300 yards and not turn the ball over, I believe that we will win. Sounds simple, but is no small task for our Yotes. We have yet to win the turnover battle in a game this year, and only topped 300 yards of offense once (last week's season high 370 yards). It's very clear that we've been winning in spite of our offense, and we face the toughest defense we've seen yet this week. Our offense will have to come out thinking big, and manage to somehow not turn it over in the process. We look like we're improving on offense, but this could be a very frustrating game.
Part of the lackluster performance was linked to a post NDSU letdown. Nonetheless, I still feel that SIU has shown vulnerability in UNI. Let's make this trip to UNI better than the last one Yotes. Make us proud!

I've got a sense of confidence heading into this game too. Maybe it is because of the two game winning streak. For what its worth, we seem to be in the minority. We're currently getting 27 points this Saturday!

Kollmorgan basically called his team out after the last game and said the team cannot have a repeat of last year in the conference. He has really turned into a leader and a quality quarterback. I know Coach Farley isn't taking USD for granted, and I assume he has a lot of respect for Coach Glenn.
As far as the SIU game, Johnson was really hindered by his hip pointer and it is still bothering him a lot, but he is still going to play. Haven't seen much of UNI's running back depth this year, but it will also hurt the passing game with Johnson injured. The Panthers have lost Phil Wright for the season, and he was the No. 3 WR. The Panthers don't have much experience after Owens and Vereen, and the TE Rohr is out with an injury. So the Yotes should stick on those two, get a good blitz and make sure someone has an eye on Johnson.
The Panthers do run a bit of a Wildcat with the backup QB, who is a transfer from Nebraska, and he can run. They might run that more this week and Kollmorgan splits out on those plays.
Defensively, the loss of Farley is huge. Even though Gacke has played extremely well this year, it's a big loss. Max Busher has taken his spot, but had to leave Saturday's game with a hamstring I believe. He should be good to go and is listed as the No. 1 on the depth chart. The DBs are young but pretty talented. However, they can be exposed, but there is still a learning curve with Earl at QB.
I think UNI is sparked for a blowout in this one after what happened last week.
I am hoping to be at the game covering it, just depends what time this volleyball tourney gets over that I have to cover. Might be there late, but would love to see this game. Then after the game, I have to jump to UNI volleyball haha. Busy day for me.

We're currently getting 27 points this Saturday! I also saw that line, and the over/under was just 40. So Vegas has pegged us to lose about 34-7. I would take USD to cover that in a heartbeat if I had the chance. I think that as long as UNI doesn't come out pissed off and motivated to bury us we'll hang in there. We have maybe a 20% chance of winning I'd say, but no way we lose by four touchdowns.

I got a gut feeling but I think the yotes get this one! Our defense is strong and with Starr and Lage at linebackers they cant double both. Earl will play a great game and Wes will open the playbook for him and let him take some shots down the field to open the run game up for the Bruise brothers. I finally think special teams put it together and have a good day as well. Usd 20 Uni 17

First play from scrimmage in 2009.... Hand off to Ganious who flips it back to Shepard who throws a bomb to a streaking Ben Oberle for the TD... something like that would be nice.

I don't see USD getting blown out. Yotes defense is too good, that will keep them in a lot of games. Also UNI is dealing with their own issues, injuries, consecutive losses, etc. I think the Yotes will play well in the UNI-Dome, which is similar to the Dakota Dome. Coming out party for Earl, special teams cleans up their act. USD wins a tight one.
