Wow. That can be meant good and bad in this game. Played a tough game overall. Bouma once again was a warrior playing hurt. He has a lot of guts playing like that. After he and Roberts were out, we are on our what, 5th string running back (also our back up quarterback). I hope someone out there is healthy for next week. What is the story with #26 Ben Gardner? He is a RB and has been in uniform all year. Why can't he play? Special Teams? Not really sure what to say here. Not sure anyone else noticed, but last kickoff, #7 for Montana who beat us deep all day was back to return for the first time. All of our players were motioning to the sideline to Tripplett that #7 was back to return and they didn't want to kick to him. Tripplett just gave them the thumbs up to kick it deep. What the heck? Come on man. He had 180 some yards and beat us deep all day. Why kick to him? Bergner was very upset after that kickoff, he took it very badly. Special teams continues to find a way to kill us, Triplett needs to get his unit together.

Cannot kick the ball to their best skill position player and most likely fastest guy. I am sure this will be a lesson learned for Tripplett. Unfortunately his education is proving to be costly this year. Three phases to the game - special teams needs a qualified coordinator. The special teams is made up of mostly defensive players, fast skill-position players. Even after kicking to that guy, they should be able to make a tackle on him. Glenn should take the reins on special teams and tell Triplett to just watch and learn.

Heartbreaker. Terrible special teams. That's all the analysis I can muster.
One note on attendance/crowd: Always want more people at the games, but I must have a bad angle on the overall dome to judge. Where I was sitting (section F towards the front), there were very few open seats and the people around us were very into it. As I looked up, there were people all the way up to the top rows in most of the sections. Pretty good energy throughout the game, and thought it was great how a large majority of the people in the stands were up during 3rd downs (and other key plays). Student attendance wasn't so great, probably due to another 3 day weekend. Of note, SDSU was in a similar situation and drew only 5300. Noticed lots of empty seats in Coughlin Alumni on last night's sports news. Captain obvious says it could be better, could be worse. No matter now, though, as we know the dome will be PACKED like we haven't seen in a long time this weekend--should be a great time!

Finally took the 439 mile trip (one way) and although the Coyotes lost, it was worth it to see them in person. A few thoughts:
There was a small but vocal crowd, however, the student section was deserted. Does USD actually have any students? I am beginning to wonder.
The campus was practically deserted as well. In fact the whole town of Vermillion appeared to be asleep. No pre-game anything going on except near the Dome.
I've read on this board and heard the sentiment pregame that the Coyotes can "hold their own" or "play with anybody". I suggest we forego that thinking. Instead we should EXPECT to win games. This seemed to be the major difference between the two teams. When leading (which was nearly the whole game), we kind of sat on the opportunity to put them away.
Number 7 was the only reason our opponent was even in this game. Failure to address the situations he presented us cost us dearly. They say speed kills. Yes, it does.
The team came off as a little beat-up. Don't know if our tight ends did much and the running back situation appears dire. I stated before that we should have started our true freshman RB and now I believe it is too late. I will always believe you live for the moment and not concern yourself about next year. In the business world do you ever hear the term "wait until next year", if things go wrong? I doubt it. Football is a business in many ways. Live for now.
My hope is that this devastating loss can be handled by the coaches and players. Losing a game like this makes it a bit more difficult to prepare for the following opponent. How do you build enthusiasm, improve skills and confidence? I don't really know but it has to be done and we as fans and supporters should do our part, whatever it is, to help. It will pay off someday.

You'll see everyone come out of the woodwork next week, all pretending to be big fans. It'll be nice to see the Dome packed, but I'll be a bit bitter that it isn't ever much more than half full most of the time.

The attendance is nothing short of upsetting. Those of us that are there are a very vocal crew, but imagine how much louder and more intimidating the dome could be! I agree about next week- it will be bittersweet. Ie. "where were all of you the last two weeks?". Anyway.....
Believe it or not, we had 58 minutes of positives yesterday. Bouma- what more is there to say. Wow. Playing hurt, making people miss and refusing to go down on the first hit. I think one of my loudest yells was on a 2 yd run by him where it should've been a 2 yard loss. I will not blame him for the loss. Horrible luck for his fumble to land right in a defender's hands in stride. Bouma has helped win plenty of games for us this year. Enough said.
Is the JVM switch from QB to WR a bigger upgrade at QB or WR for us? Wow, talk about not sulking and STEPPING UP in a position where we really needed it. Does he even have a drop this year? I remember one time when he was sort of laying on his back and a ball bounced off his hands- I think that's his only drop. And filling in at HB? Come on- talk about doing whatever it takes to help the team. Way to go Josh!
Earl solid as always. I am very impressed with his ability to throw the ball away. And is there a slower/faster mobile QB out there? Somehow he lumbers for 10, 15 yards and gets the job done.
I think our DBs have been skating by a bit this year. When we don't pressure the QB, there's big trouble. So, I'm stating the obvious, but yesterday that was glaringly obvious. For what it's worth, their QB didn't see #7 on another sure 50 yarder- thank goodness.
I concur with all the sentiments on Special Teams. The players are clearly capable, so that only leaves culpability in one place in my opinion.
Officials: I'll rate them 'ok' for both judiciousness and effectiveness. I thought there were bad calls on both sides. They clearly missed a chop block on Starr. There was also a defensive hold on us they didn't call. In my opinion, they gave us favorable spots most of the day. Often times an entire yard. BUT... keeping the clock running on that 2 yard pass on the final drive was a terrible call- at least at real speed. Maybe the replay shows differently.
Neither 0-2 or 2-0 to finish this season would surprise me. Let's hope for the latter.
GO YOTES!

I've read more than once that the biggest difference between FCS level-of-play and FBS is the quality of special teams play. They cite the main difference as depth. I agree.
I am not coaching this team but think that next year we need to acquire a quality punter, much like we had in the past. I think our kicker is good, not great and to become great he needs to focus on kicking only.

The kickoff team has given up big returns all year. It seems the outside contain gets sucked in like no other. They should have squibbed it, pouched it, or hell even kick it out of bounds. While on the special teams topic, what is up with our kick return team? We rarely get it past the 20 yard line. Most teams we play, just like #7, always eventually kick it to the outside and get big returns. Our returners get it and run right up the middle to the piles of guys laying on the ground and dance around, then get taken down. Why can't we just hit it and go? Maybe we need to try Vander Maten at kick returner? He never got a chance to return a punt yesterday.

Special Teams needs work, and lots of it. Bergner, however, just needs time. You have to remember he is a true freshman. He had a decent game yesterday, aside from the KO out-of-bounds (I'm sure he was instructed to keep it away from center), and he got sucked in to middle of field on final return (along with more than 1 other Coyote). Yes, a lesson he needs to learn, but the talk of USD needing another punter, or kicker, for the following 3 seasons is really unnecessary. Look at his stats from Saturday, I'm good with that for the next 3 years.

I was thinking this would be an easy W at the start of the year but now I'm thinking this may be one of our toughest road tests.... USD could be big time soon. GO GRIZDamn I one point off...

Mick Garry said earlier this week that Bouma and Roberts did not practice Tuesday. He also said in the chat today that he wouldn't be surprised if Bouma plays. Does anyone know if Bouma practiced either Wednesday or Thursday?

Glenn likes to say that if a guy doesn't get practice in by Wednesday that 9 times out of 10 they aren't effective on Saturday. Perhaps we'll see this belief put to practice. I have no idea if either have practiced at all, but I wouldn't be in any hurry to let the opponents know.
