Miller's Auburn squad is currently down 50-37 to South Carolina with 13 minutes to go. If they lose, I'd imagine the search committee will find out pretty soon whether or not he's interested. Assuming he hasn't submitted an application already. And it's over. Barring a bid to the CBI or CIT, which seems unlikely, their season is over. Wait and see what interest Ryan Miller shows. Craig Smith would be my top choice. From listening to Tim Miles, he sounds like he's pretty good at assessing talent (see Terran Petteway, leading scorer in the Big Ten, who was set to join Miles and Smith at Colorado State until they went to Nebraska), he is a regional guy who went to UND, was one of the top candidates two years ago when the Colorado State job opened up, and he has spent 7 years working as the right hand man to Tim Miles, who I believe to be one of the best in the game today (look at what they've already done to Nebraska, they may be a Sweet Sixteen team this year already). I think that Craig Smith would be a blessing if we could get him. Ryan Miller would be my second choice, and I still don't even know if he is in our threshold. He is supposedly a top notch recruiter, has ties that are as local as we can ask for, plenty of connections in the college basketball world, and sounds like he is pretty good at beating Nagy from listening to you guys.

Things did just get a whole lot more interesting. He may be ours, or he may be head coach at Auburn?

I don't see him getting the HC job at Auburn. That would be quite the leap for him (not that we aren't speculating for our own sake). Get Herby on a plane to Auburn, Alabama!.

What is it we know about Miller? He's from South Dakota, and hasn't been back since college was over. His brother is famous, and he's from SD. Look at his history and at minimum ask some questions. For starters, he was on John Calipari's staff at Memphis. Calipari is not exactly known for his wholesomeness in the business. Then he gets the job at Kentucky yet Ryan doesn't go with him. Why? Then he gets a job at Pepperdine and is there one year. Why one year? Then he joins Steve Alford at New Mexico, and that is probably in my eyes the only somewhat impressive job he's had. They did do well, but a lot of the people I know says Alford is a real jerk, and those are not exactly the characteristics I'm looking forward to leading our team. Now , Alford goes to UCLA but yet Miller doesn't go. Why?
After NM, he joins his friend at Auburn and a sinking ship. Auburn is horrendous. That staff is fired, he has zero chance of getting the job, yet many of us on here want Herbster to rush down and sign him? Not me. Something just doesn't seem right. I don't know anything about the head coach at Auburn but Alford and Calipari aren't exactly the kind of people I would want mentoring my kid.
Lets do this the right way. Hire someone that has outstanding charecter, is a proven recruiter, and has the ability to fit in and excite our fan base from the start.

Yoteforever, I can appreciate that analysis. I definitely think this is make or break for our program - we definitely have to do it right.

He has worked under people who are very well known for their lack of character (I know Iowa fans want to see Alford burn), plus his limited stays at a couple schools are curious. Obviously I don't know Ryan Miller very well, but I do hope our AD is looking for character in our next coach. I stated before this program needs character, and it all comes down from the top. Perhaps we are better off without him. We are at a very pivotal moment in our program's history, we need a good hire. I say that if Craig Smith is actually interested in the head coaching position that we do whatever we reasonably can to get him here. That man could build us the same way Tim Miles built NDSU.

With the limited stays he was getting a promotion in the coaching lines each time. From someone close to the situation they said ucla and minnesota both offered him last year but he was too loyal to auburn and barbee to leave. They also said ucla is very interested in him again.

Doing a Twitter search on miller its easy to see the local media in auburn saying they need to do whatever they can do to retain miller. New Mexico media outlets praising miller as well. He's won the fans this is something we can use as our turnout at the summit was pretty unimpressive.
Although some on hear question the people who he's worked for they all have something in common. ...winning.

Down in Ames the rumor is out that TJ Otzelberger is a candidate for your head coaching position. I looked around the board last night and saw the list of candidates that someone had posted and saw TJ's name. I don't know the other candidates at all, I'm usually not in tune with assistant coaches.
I'm close to TJ. I will say this. There are two things I can guaranty you about TJ. First, there isn't anyone on the planet that has more character and integrity than TJ. He's just a fantastic guy. Secondly, TJ was Iowa States top recruiting assistant and I can only imagine what he could do for your school. He recruited Melvin Ejim to Iowa State, who was this years Big 12 player of the year. Melvin had commited to Iowa State when Greg McDermott was the coach, Coach Mac decided to go to Creighton, and TJ single handedly kept Ejim in the fold till Hoiberg was announced. Then Ejim elected to stay on with the Cyclones. That says a lot about him.
The other thing you need to know about TJ is no one will outwork him. That's a fact. His energy level, and how he goes about building relationships to me is very impressive. TJ is extremely well liked. Last year there were rumors that Hoiberg was going to leave Iowa State and go to Minnesota. The rumors in Ames were very strong. The AD down there was prepared to offer him the head job immediately if indeed Hoiberg left. Apparently the rumors were true about Hoiberg because another friend of mine told me Polllard(AD) had made his decision.
Iowa State is now a very legit top 15 school, and TJ had a lot to do with that. He is extremely well connected in the recruiting world and my bet is he would have the Coyotes contending soon. He will make it happen. TJ is a small town guy, and although I've never been to Vermillion, my guess is that it is your typical small Midwestern town. He is a perfect fit for that. Also, as a possible bonus, his wife was an all conference player for Iowa State from Australia. I saw your women's program is going dancing, congrats on that, and rumor down here is we will see you play in Ames. But his wife may be interested in coaching if your program was looking for a bona fide candidate. His wife's name is Allison, and she is a great gal.
Anyway, I'll bounce in and out of here to see what the newest rumors are, but I think you would be so pleased to have TJ as your coach. He's just a great guy. I'm not taking away from the other candidates, but I think some one should post to let you know about this guy. If I had the chance to sign him, I'd do it now and drop the search. That's how good he is.

I also don't know much about assistants around the country, just from the couple programs I like to follow, so this insight is much appreciated! Who said the Yotes couldn't get good coaches to come here? Sounds like there's plenty of interest from highly qualified candidates!
